Download or read book Temple Terrace written by Lana Burroughs and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influential and adventurous Chicago socialite Mrs. Potter Palmer (Bertha) struck out for Florida in 1910, eventually buying thousands of acres of land across the state. In 1914, after setting up residence in Sarasota, she established Riverhills, a hunting preserve on 19,000 acres in the area now known as Temple Terrace. Local historians believe it was Palmer's vision to create one of America's first planned golf course communities, where every Mediterranean Revival villa sold would include its own grove. Intended to provide a hobby and part-time income for the wealthy Northerners lured to the Sunshine State, 5,000 acres were planted with the exotic hybrid Temple orange--making up the largest citrus grove in the world at the time. The new city was named after the orange and for the sloping terrain of the land along the Hillsborough River.

Download or read book Dealing With Debt written by Thomas J. Biersteker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global debt burden has proven to be a bad bargain for developed and developing countries alike. This selection of case studies illustrates the complexity of international financial negotiations and the difficulty of reaching international agreements satisfactory to both creditors and debtors. The key aspects of debtor country bargaining power are explored-size, strategic significance, internal cohesion, and political stability-as we read of creditors flexing their financial muscles to produce domestic economic reform without significant international debt relief. This volume brings together a theoretical overview of the subject, cases describing the principal institutional actors, carefully excerpted cases of bilateral financial negotiations, sugggestions for further reading, and a helpful glossary of technical terms. It illuminates how complex international financial negotiations are conducted and what their impact is on both the domestic political economy and the international relations of the countries involved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its rich cultural history and many landmark buildings, Harlem is not just one of New York’s most distinctive neighborhoods; it’s also one of the most walkable. This illustrated guide takes readers on five separate walking tours of Harlem, covering ninety-one different historical sites. Alongside major tourist destinations like the Apollo Theater and the Abyssinian Baptist Church, longtime Harlem resident Karen Taborn includes little-known local secrets like Jazz Age speakeasies, literati, political and arts community locales. Drawing from rare historical archives, she also provides plenty of interesting background information on each location. This guide was designed with the needs of walkers in mind. Each tour consists of eight to twenty-nine nearby sites, and at the start of each section, readers will find detailed maps of the tour sites, as well as an estimated time for each walk. In case individuals would like to take a more leisurely tour, it provides recommendations for restaurants and cafes where they can stop along the way. Walking Harlem gives readers all the tools they need to thoroughly explore over a century’s worth of this vital neighborhood’s cultural, political, religious, and artistic heritage. With its informative text and nearly seventy stunning photographs, this is the most comprehensive, engaging, and educational walking tour guidebook on one of New York’s historic neighborhoods.

Book Synopsis Tappin' at the Apollo by : Cheryl M. Willis
Download or read book Tappin' at the Apollo written by Cheryl M. Willis and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-03-08 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1920s and 1930s, Edwina "Salt" Evelyn and Jewel "Pepper" Welch learned to tap dance on street corners in New York and Philadelphia. By the 1940s, they were Black show business headliners, playing Harlem's Apollo Theater with the likes of Count Basie, Fats Waller and Earl "Fatha" Hines. Their exuberant tap style, usually performed by men, earned them the respect of their male peers and the acclaim of audiences. Based on extensive interviews with Salt and Pepper, this book chronicles for the first time the lives and careers of two overlooked female performers who succeeded despite the racism, sexism and homophobia of the Big Band era.
