The aim of this study was to find out the problem that Chinese students have with cloze tests and to determine whether they are associated with the inefficient use of reading strategies.

The first part delves into the foundation of Chinese literacy development—how to learn and teach Chinese characters. The second part examines various learners’ reading comprehension subskills, as well as the evolution of learners’ literacy identity. The third part explores effective instructional methods and assessment practices for CAL reading development. Theoretically, this book provides frameworks and evidence from both cognitive and sociocultural perspectives on the nature of CAL reading development. Pedagogically, the book showcases how to teach and assess CAL reading skills. Methodologically, this book includes empirical studies using both qualitative and quantitative methods. In terms of scope, the book covers a much broader spectrum of issues about CAL reading research and classroom teaching than has previously been available. Writing is also discussed in several chapters. In terms of technology, the book includes discussion on how the use of computers, the Internet, and social media impacts students’ Chinese literacy acquisition. It theorizes the concept of teacher agency from a sociocultural theory perspective and draws on a study conducted in a conservative and less developed area in China. The book uses Engeström's activity theory and Vygotsky's concept of the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) to understand the nature and extent of teacher agency in adapting one’s teaching with respect to beliefs, knowledge and instructional practices. The study concludes that curriculum reform in China needs to shift from reliance on 'top-down' policies to 'bottom-up' implementation that mobilizes local understandings and practices. One of the implications of this study is that transformative teacher education programs aimed at developing teacher pedagogical agency require that teachers have ongoing opportunities to design, develop and evaluate curriculum-based mediational means.

Book excerpt: As a teacher of English as a foreign language for over ten years, I have witnessed many students struggle to read critically. This study examines how Virtual Collaborative Strategic Reading (VCSR) instruction can promote Chinese English as a Foreign Language (CEFL) students' critical reading. It was achieved through quantitative research methods and employed a quasi-experimental design to explore the effects of VCSR on CEFL university students' critical reading.Fifty-seven students participated and were randomly assigned into either the treatment group or the control group. The control group was taught with traditional teaching methods, while the treatment group was instructed with VCSR. The pretest and posttest reading assessments evaluated all students' literal, inferential, and critical levels of reading. Furthermore, a questionnaire was used to understand the treatment group students' attitudes towards VCSR. The results indicated that students showed a generally agreeable attitude towards VCSR which also promoted a significant increase in critical level reading comprehension after the intervention. The findings of this study provide instructional suggestions for CEFL teachers and offer practical reading strategies for CEFL students to improve their critical reading.
