Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanity has long been fascinated by the planet Mars. Was its climate ever conducive to life? What is the atmosphere like today and why did it change so dramatically over time? Eleven spacecraft have successfully flown to Mars since the Viking mission of the 1970s and early 1980s. These orbiters, landers and rovers have generated vast amounts of data that now span a Martian decade (roughly eighteen years). This new volume brings together the many new ideas about the atmosphere and climate system that have emerged, including the complex interplay of the volatile and dust cycles, the atmosphere-surface interactions that connect them over time, and the diversity of the planet's environment and its complex history. Including tutorials and explanations of complicated ideas, students, researchers and non-specialists alike are able to use this resource to gain a thorough and up-to-date understanding of this most Earth-like of planetary neighbours.

Excerpt: ...is familiar enough with the fact that the commonest violent local inversion takes place in the daytime, and especially in the afternoon. Nevertheless, destructive hail occurs in the night in the thunderstorms developed out of Stratus Castellatus, and many cases may occur to the memory. A single example will suffice, which was interesting to a dweller in London or Cambridge. The hail shower which crossed the English Channel, moving towards the north-east above a northerly or north-easterly breeze, wrought some havoc on the night of August 2nd to 3rd, 1879. Cumulo-nimbus Nivosus 79. Very little need be said about the snow shower of Inversion. It is useful to distinguish it, as a minor variety, because it differs in physical characteristics and in its association with phenomena of weather from the other shower clouds of Inversion; and it is convenient to give it a symbol of its own, because the use of this saves some time and trouble to any one who keeps a record of cloud observations, or who assists in charting such observations on a cloud-map. In altitude the variety is inferior to that which has immediately preceded it in this book. Belonging properly to the winter of the higher latitudes, though common also over mountains near the equator, Cumulo-nimbus Nivosus is readily formed at no very great height above the earth's surface, and the mechanical process is completed without an ascent to the very high level of the largest hail shower. When the snow stadium is reached by a cloud of Inversion, congelation takes place not above but below the level at which the kernels of hard hail are produced. For whether the cloud is formed in the winter of high latitudes or over mountains near the equator, snow which falls locally to, or nearly to, the...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clouds affect our daily weather and play key roles in the global climate. Through their ability to precipitate, clouds provide virtually all of the fresh water on Earth and are a crucial link in the hydrologic cycle. With ever-increasing importance being placed on quantifiable predictions - from forecasting the local weather to anticipating climate change - we must understand how clouds operate in the real atmosphere, where interactions with natural and anthropogenic pollutants are common. This textbook provides students - whether seasoned or new to the atmospheric sciences - with a quantitative yet approachable path to learning the inner workings of clouds. Developed over many years of the authors' teaching at Pennsylvania State University, Physics and Chemistry of Clouds is an invaluable textbook for advanced students in atmospheric science, meteorology, environmental sciences/engineering and atmospheric chemistry. It is also a very useful reference text for researchers and professionals.

Book excerpt: COSPAR Space Research, Volume 20 covers the proceedings of the open meetings of the Working Groups on Physical Sciences of the 22nd Plenary Meeting of COSPAR in Bangalore, India on May 29-June 9, 1979. This volume is organized into four parts encompassing 50 chapters that review significant advances in space research concerning the Earth's atmosphere and plasma envelope, as well as in the planetary science and astronomy fields. Part I describes the unique properties of the different layers of the Earth's neutral atmosphere, including the tropical troposphere, stratosphere, and mesosphere. This part also deals with the measurements of atmospheric radiation, the application of remote sensing by satellites to radiation climatology, the structure and circulation of the stratosphere and mesosphere, and the theory and application of thermospheric models. Part II highlights the research studies concerning the chemistry and energetic charged particle effect in the ionosphere. This part also examines the in situ measurements of equatorial ionosphere and the distribution of singly ionized helium through backscatter observations. Part III contains surveys associated with some planetary components, such as the comets, moon, and Venus. This part specifically discusses the data obtained from different probes, models, and analytical techniques to study these components. Part IV explores research works on the sun, cosmic ray, and infrared and gamma-ray astronomy. This book is intended primarily to astronomers and space scientists and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential primer on atmospheric processes and their important role in the climate system The atmosphere is critical to climate change. It can amplify shifts in the climate system, and also mitigate them. This primer offers a short, reader-friendly introduction to these atmospheric processes and how they work, written by a leading expert on the subject. Giving readers an overview of key atmospheric processes, David Randall looks at how our climate system receives energy from the sun and sheds it by emitting infrared radiation back into space. The atmosphere regulates these radiative energy flows and transports energy through weather systems such as thunderstorms, monsoons, hurricanes, and winter storms. Randall explains how these processes work, and also how precipitation, cloud formation, and other phase changes of water strongly influence weather and climate. He discusses how atmospheric feedbacks affect climate change, how the large-scale atmospheric circulation works, how predicting the weather and the climate are fundamentally different challenges, and much more. This is the ideal introduction for students and nonspecialists. No prior experience in atmospheric science is needed, only basic college physics. Authoritative and concise, Atmosphere, Clouds, and Climate features a glossary of terms, suggestions for further reading, and easy-to-follow explanations of a few key equations. This accessible primer is the essential introduction to atmospheric processes and the vital role they play in our climate system.

Book excerpt: Clouds play a critical role in the Earth's climate, general atmospheric circulation, and global water balance. Clouds are essential elements in mesoscale meteorology, atmospheric chemistry, air pollution, atmosphericradiation, and weather forecasting, and thus must be understood by any student or researcher in the atmospheric sciences. Cloud Dynamics provides a skillful and comprehensive examination of the nature of clouds--what they look like and why, how scientists observe them, and the basic dynamics and physics that underlie them. The book describes the mechanics governing each type of cloud that occurs in Earth's atmosphere, and the organization of various types of clouds in larger weather systems such as fronts, thunderstorms, and hurricanes. This book is aimed specifically at graduate students, advanced undergraduates, practicing researchers either already in atmospheric science or moving in from a related scientific field, and operational meteorologists. Some prior knowledge of atmospheric dynamics and physics is helpful, but a thorough overview of the necessary prerequisites is supplied. Provides a complete treatment of clouds integrating the analysis of air motions with cloud structure, microphysics, and precipitation mechanics Describes and explains the basic types of clouds and cloud systems that occur in the atmosphere-fog, stratus, stratocumulus, altocumulus, altostratus, cirrus, thunderstorms, tornadoes, waterspouts, orographically induced clouds, mesoscale convection complexes, hurricanes, fronts, and extratropical cyclones Presents a photographic guide, presented in the first chapter, linking the examination of each type of cloud with an image to enhance visual retention and understanding Summarizes the fundamentals, both observational and theoretical, of atmospheric dynamics, thermodynamics, cloud microphysics, and radar meteorology, allowing each type of cloud to be examined in depth Integrates the latest field observations, numerical model simulations, and theory Supplies a theoretical treatment suitable for the advanced undergraduate or graduate level
