The human settlers - farmers and scientists - are finding that their crops won't grow and their lives are becoming more and more dangerous. The indigenous plant life - never entirely safe - is changing in unpredictable ways, and the imported plantings wither and die. And so the order is given - Paradise will be abandoned. All personnel will be removed and reassigned. And all human presence on the planet will be disestablished. Not all agree with the decision. There are some who believe that Paradise has more to offer the human race. That the planet is not finished with the intruders, and that the risks of staying are outweighed by the possible rewards. And so the leader of the research team and one of the demolition workers set off on a journey across the planet. Along the way they will encounter the last of the near-mythical Dendron, the vicious Reapers and the deadly Tattersall Weeds as they embark on an adventure which will bring them closer to nature, to each other and, eventually, to Paradise.

Book excerpt: Cast in Paradise is an historic novel that follows the fortunes of working families in Witton Park, a small village in County Durham, from the opening of the iron works in the mid-1800s, during its zenith in the 1860s to its decline and closure in the 1880s. Through the eyes and lives of migrants from other parts of Britain, the times and tribulations of this tough, down to earth and sometimes bitterly divided community are brought to life. Witton Park in the late nineteenth century was a bonanza to capital investors and attracted workers in droves—numbers that far outstripped the more famous gold rushes of California and the Klondike. Wages erupted so that men labouring in the iron works or mining coal from the local pits earned three or four times what an agricultural worker did. Employment at Witton Park brought unparalleled wealth to many ordinary people but for others it brought misery. Bouts of excessive drinking and addiction to gambling resulted in domestic violence and ruin to some. And life in such close proximity also brought to a head ingrained religious differences that festered just below the surface. Paradise attracted hard men; good and bad. It became home to thousands who lived, loved and laboured for a better life. They built a village and set down roots in the iron-hard ground—roots that hold together still.

Book excerpt: Vladimir Zakharov is the author of several books of poetry and the winner of two literary prizes; his works regularly appear in prestigious Russian periodicals. When not writing poetry, he works as a theoretical physicist. In this capacity Zakharov is Regents' Professor at the University of Arizona and a full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Several equations, theories and effects bear his name. Asteroid 7153 Vladzakharov orbits the Sun every 3.6 years. This is the first collection of Vladimir Zakharov's poetry to be published in an English translation. The selected works, written over a period of some 40 years, address the predicament of a renaissance-type intellectual caught up in the modern world and reflect upon the inevitability of death. All translations in this bilingual book are congruent: that is, they aim to preserve not only the key imagery but also the poetic form of the originals, allowing Anglophone readers to appreciate the works of Vladimir Zakharov on their own terms, complete with the distinctive formal features described in the editor's afterword.

Bliven Putnam, now Captain of the sloop of war Rappahannock, has come into his own as a leader and is ordered to the Pacific. But with this new tour of duty to last more than two years, his patient wife, Clarity, unwilling to accept such a brief time together, at last puts her foot down. If she can't keep Putnam with her, then she'll just have to go with him. As Putnam sets sail for his new home port in Honolulu, Clarity joins a new missionary effort from Boston to Hawaii. On their respective paths, the Putnams encounter a new breed of pirate and meet an unexpected force of nature: Kahumanu, the formidable queen of the Hawaiian Islands. Inspried by the real-life Olowalu Massacre and the famed Congregationalist missoin of 1819, this third outing will be unlike any adventure the Putnams have faced before.

Book excerpt: George Hudson - the eponymous Railway King - started his career with a stroke of luck, inheriting £27,000 (a fortune in 1827) from a distant relative. He invested successfully in the North Midland Railway, then formed his own Midland Railway, raising £5 million and bribing MPs along the way. But from his glory in 1845 he fell into disgrace, admitting corruption and selling land he did not own. He was eventually imprisoned in York Castle and died a broken man in 1871. His story provides an excellent insight into nineteenth-century politics and industrial progress, full of moral dilemmas and a testimony to the growth of the railways in Britain - a timely subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a child, Katia Barnes has a recurring nightmare. In the dream, she is a young Victorian woman, alone in a dark house at twilight, desperately searching for something. She is caught by surprise by a man with a pistol. A chase ensues, and she is killed. Katia wakes up in terror, knowing she has just experienced this woman´s death. The dream eventually fades away, but always remains in the back of her mind. Katia becomes a romance novelist, and after churning out the same book thirty times over, becomes disenchanted with her chosen genre. Her father dies, leaving her an unexpected legacy; an old Rosedale mansion left to him by a mysterious, unknown aunt. Immediately upon seeing the house, Katia recognizes it as the same one from her childhood dream. The Victorian house is named Eden. Inspired by its sense of mystery, Katia moves in, and starts renovations, planning to open a Bed and Breakfast. Soon, she finds out what she has in fact inherited is a former Victorian brothel. Katia also finds a trunk full of diaries, written by a woman named Adela, who lived in the house from 1899 to 1912. Katia starts reading the diaries, becoming obsessed with them. Adela was born in Cairo, Egypt, the illegitimate daughter of a British newspaper correspondent, and an Egyptian bellydancer. Her mother dies when she is a small child, and she and her brother are taken to England by their father. Victorian London is not kind to Adela, she is considered "half-African", and shunned. As a young woman, Adela journeys to Canada to start a new life. On board the ship, she meets Doctor Anthony Maxwell, a wealthy Canadian businessman, who has a unique philosophy based upon ancient Egypt. They fall in love, deciding to marry upon their arrival in Montréal. However, Adela gets more than she bargained for. Not only is Maxwell bisexual, he also has a sideline providing "courtesans" for Toronto´s elite. Katia is engrossed by the diaries, and discovers many unusual features in the house; a secret passageway, for one. Strange paranormal experiences begin to happen. Katia calls upon her friend Raine, who is a psychic. Raine advises Katia that it is her "Karma" to clean up a mess from the past, and in doing so, she will find her own life will be changed for the better. The diaries lead Katia on a mystical journey of discovery, unveiling her family´s hidden past. Adela´s story reveals many "dirty secrets" of Victorian/Edwardian Toronto; a world of extremes in both wealth and poverty, widespread narcotics use, racism, and the many problems and struggles faced by women. The Paradox of Paradise is rich in substance, covering a spectrum of life topics; history, philosophy, love, heartache, sexuality, and the paranormal. Through a strange journey, the two heroines´ lives become intertwined. Katia solves most of the mystery, except for the most important part; who killed Adela, and why? The answer comes in an ending with a twist, which does indeed change Katia´s life. Katia discovers the meaning of "The Paradox of Paradise".
