Book excerpt: Whereas during the past decade endoscopy has become established as the leading means of diagnosis and management of diseases affecting the esophagus, starnach and large bowel, radiology has retained its pre-eminence for the clinical study and evaluation of the small bowel. This book provides unique coverage of all current radiological techniques used to study the small bowel, including not only barium studies and angiography but also cross-sectional methods such as uhrasound and computer tomography as well as nuclear medicine. Ernerging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging are given close consideration, and interventional procedures are dealt with fully. Following an introduction on anatomy, physiology, and pathology pertinent to radiol ogy, the book describes in great detail common and less common congenital and development anomalies, trauma, infectious and infl.ammatory conditions, and tumors. The radiological accounts are illustrated by unique color photographs of pathological specimens. It is important for all professionals involved in the management of patients with small-bowel disease tobe critically informed about the specific advantages as well as the limitations of the various modern imaging techniques now employed for the in vivo morphological evaluation of the small bowel. This comprehensive book provides a timely update of our knowledge in this field and is a welcome addition to our series "Medical Radiology;' which aims to provide exhaustive coverage of modern diagnostic radiology. It will be of great interest for general and abdominal radiologists, gastroen terologists, and abdominal surgeons.

Many of the great names in gastrointestinal radiology have established their reputations on the basis of their work in the small bowel. This is an area which is assuming ever greater importance for radiologists as its mucosal surface continues to elude the endos copist. Moreover, it is an aspect of radiology which calls for the greatest technical and interpretative skill. It is a great pleasure to welcome the English language version of this beautiful work on Radiology of the Small Intestine. English speaking physicians are frequently not as familiar with the large body of work published in French as they should be. Tant pis ! Dr. Bret and his co-workers have been pioneers in the pursuit of excellence in gastrointestinal radiology. During all the years that I have been involved in this field, I have admired their work.

All booklets are designed so as to cover a large spectrum of topics referring to different anatomical regions of interest. Entries typically include a short description of pathological and clinical characteristics, guidance on selection of the most appropriate imaging technique, a schematic review of potential diagnostic clues, and useful tips and tricks. The present booklet, enriched by illustrations and schemes, is devoted to gastrointestinal imaging. Major topics in CT and MR imaging of the small bowel, colon, rectum, and anus are treated concisely in alphabetical order. For each topic a brief review of clinical features and pathology is presented, followed by a short description of imaging technique and an accurate review of imaging findings and signs which are useful in the differential diagnosis of gastrointestinal disease.

Book excerpt: This book meets the challenges of diagnostic imaging of the small intestine and enriches the understanding of small bowel neoplasms and the capabilities of diagnostic imaging. In recent years there has been a considerable increase in interest in the role of enteroclysis (small bowel enema) as a method of examining the small intestine. After this technique was refined, many radiologists have adopted it in the last decade. At the same time computed tomography has become widely used in abdominal disorders which can play a crucial role in the evaluation of small bowel neoplasms. Angiography has always been important for detecting neoplasms that present with bleeding. This volume is written in a comprehensive manner and is richly illustrated with 468 photographs of which 82 in full colour.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This atlas is a selection of roentgenograms of patients who visited the radiology departments at the University Hospital in Leiden between 1970 and 1978, the Free University Hospital in Amsterdam in 1979, and the radiology department at the Indiana University Medical School in Indianapolis in 1977. The most common radiological abnormalities of the small intestine are illustrated clearly, unhindered by flocculation or segmentation of the contrast fluid. The authors believe this book is a definite contribution to the goal of precise early small bowel diagnosis. However, the key to good diagnosis is not only a superb examination technique, but also the knowledge, the character, and the personal perfectionism of the physician. If these factors are optimal, then the best possible roentgenographic series will be obtained - at least as far as the technique is concerned. All patients illustrated here were examined by using the enteroclysis technique. With this method of small bowel examination, the contrast fluid is administered via an infusion directly into the duodenum instead of orally. The infusion method has added a new dimension to the usual radiological examination of the small intestine. This method is also especially suited for the comparative evaluation of motility, and the study of disturbed motility. Throughout the course of the examination, the technique can be adapted to special situations at any given moment and can be modified to produce precise diagnostic roentgenograms and diagnosis.

This multi-author text describes the current approach to colonic imaging and provides a detailed insight into likely future developments. The role of radiology in cancer screening is fully considered. In this context, particular attention is devoted to CT and MR virtual colonography, which, it is anticipated, will largely replace barium enema radiology and reduce the use of diagnostic colonoscopy. Modern cancer staging techniques, including PET scanning, are reviewed, and post-treatment follow-up strategies are examined. The imaging of inflammatory and traumatic conditions of the colon is described, as are current colonic interventional options, such as tumour stenting, colon decompression and vascular embolisation. In short, this book provides a comprehensive, well-illustrated and up-to-date review of colonic imaging.

Book excerpt: This volume, which explains why, when, and how abdominal MRI should be used, focuses in particular on the most recent developments in the field. After introductory chapters on technical considerations, protocol optimization, and contrast agents, MRI of the various solid and hollow viscera of the abdomen is addressed in a series of detailed chapters. Relevant clinical information is provided, and state of the art protocols presented. With the help of numerous high-quality illustrations, normal, variant, and abnormal imaging findings are described and potential artefacts highlighted. Differential diagnosis is given extensive consideration, and comparisons are made with competing methodologies when relevant. Each of the chapters is rounded off by a section on "pearls and pitfalls". The closing chapters focus on findings in the pediatric abdomen, advances in MRI specifically relevant to cancer patients, and the use of abdominal MRI at 3 Tesla. This book, written by leading experts, will be of value to all who are involved in learning, performing, interpreting, and reporting abdominal MRI examinations.
