This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expert clinicians and basic scientists with a special interest in Parkinson’s disease review the current state of science and clinical therapeutics of the disease. Therefore these articles represent an authorative review of the current state of knowledge regarding preclinical course and symptomatology, subtypes with their impact on the pathology, genetic alterations, novel mechanisms of neuronal cell death, diagnostic tools and old and novel therapeutic approaches with respect to neuroprotection and neuroregeneration in Parkinson’s disease. Particular emphasis has been placed on a novel antiparkinsonian drug called budipine with various modes of action also influencing altered non dopaminergic systems in Parkinson’s disease. It is evident, that many questions on the cause, course and treatment of Parkinson’s disease are still unanswered and therefore the ideal way to treat a parkinsonian patient remains to be defined.

Book Synopsis Therapeutic Hemorheology by : Albrecht M. Ehrly
Download or read book Therapeutic Hemorheology written by Albrecht M. Ehrly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hemorheologic therapy has gained considerably in importance in recent years. This detailed and comprehensive book enumerates, discusses, and critically evaluates those treatment methods in which therapeutic success rests essentially on achieving an improvement in hemodynamics. After a general account of clinical hemorheology, fundamental aspects of hemorheologic methods and the eval- uation and assessment of hemorheologic parameters are discussed and the pathophysiology is described in detail. The treatment methods and substances that bring about improvement of the hemodynamics are described in chronologic order of first publication, and in each case all known later publications are also discussed in the order in which they appeared. This topical account of hemorheologic therapy - the results reported to date and the spectrum of applications - will be a valuable addition to the library both of the specialist and of all interested doctors in hospital and general practice.

Book Synopsis The Blood-Brain Barrier, Amino Acids and Peptides by : M. Segal

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Definition of the barrier The interstitial fluid (rSF) of the brain is separated from the blood by the blood-brain barrier (BBB). This barrier must not be thought of as a single entity or as an absolute restriction to all molecules, but as a multiple structure located at several sites within the brain. The first of these interfaces is located at the endothelium of the brain capillaries. Secondly there is a potential site for interchange on the outer linings of the brain between the dura and the arachnoid membranes. Thirdly, there are the choroid plexuses and the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) which is in contact with the very permeable internal ependymal lining of the brain (Figure 1. 1). Finally there are areas of the brain which lack a blood-brain barrier. These areas constitute the circumventricu lar organs and have leaky capillaries with a barrier at the ependyma which limits the spread of molecules from those regions (Figure 1. 2). Each of these BBB sites has its own characteristic permeability and transport functions. We will now consider the properties of each of these barrier sites between the blood and the brain. THE CEREBRAL CAPILLARY ENDOTHELIUM Morphology This interface has both the largest surface area and the shortest path length between the blood and the brain rSF. The cerebral capillaries, which at first sight seem little different from the rest of the systemic circulation, are in fact unique to the brain.

Book excerpt: This is the most comprehensive update of basic and clinical information available on mental, addictive and various neurological disorders. Virtually every basic and clinical scientific methodology that is relevant to our understanding and management of brain-related diseases is included in this volume. Readers will find up-to-the-minute studies in functional brain imaging, including MRI and EEG/ERP mapping, the latest application of molecular biology and genetics to solve clinical problems, as well as recent findings on schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease, drug addiction and alcoholism, suicide and mood disorders. A unique feature of this publication are the nine chapters which examine chronic subsyndromal states in mood, anxiety, and neurocognitive disorders, including chronic fatigue syndrome, conditions which plague so many people worldwide. Other more specific sections of the book deal with antiglutamatergic drugs, the modern treatment of social phobia and characteristics of new atypical neuroleptic drugs. Clinicians who wish to practice at the forefront in their field and researchers requiring up-to-date data will find this book a worthwhile addition to their libraries. Students will also find it a useful and comprehensive reference source.
