Book excerpt: The ability to use tools skillfully is generally regarded as one of the major achievements in the evolutionary development of the human nervous system. It is possible for controlled movements of muscles to be executed only if sensory information is integrated into complex neural circuits at various hierarchical levels. The chapters in this volume deal with basic and clinical aspects of integrative processing of sensory and motor activities. New findings emphasize the important influence of somatosensory activity such as tactile, proprioceptive, noxious cutaneous, and articular input on motor output. Furthermore, recordings of evoked potentials as well as unit recordings indicate that sensory and cortical activities are highly interrelated. Control of muscles by motoneurons is exerted both electrically and chemically. Disturbed muscle-motoneuron interaction is reflected in ultrastructural motoneuron morphology and may be of importance in the pathogenesis of motoneuron disease. Long loop reflex testing under various pathological conditions provides insight into disturbed sensory motor circuitry in humans. Electrophysiological recording as well as neurochemical and im munohistochemical studies elucidate the neural circuitry of basal ganglia and their neural connections, thus providing improved therapeutic concepts. The role of the thalamus and thalamocortical connections in sensory motor processing is of particular interest, because motor disturbances such as tremor or dystonia can be effectively relieved by stereotaxic interventions at the subthalamic or thalamic level.

Book excerpt: Autism: The Movement Sensing Perspective is the result of a collaborative effort by parents, therapists, clinicians, and researchers from all disciplines in science including physics, engineering, and applied mathematics. This book poses questions regarding the current conceptualization and approach to the study of autism, providing an alternative unifying data-driven framework grounded in physiological factors. This book reaches beyond subjective descriptions of autistic phenomena and embraces a new era of objective measurements, analyses, and statistical inferences. The authors harness activities from the nervous systems across the brain and body (often in tandem), and introduce a platform for the comprehensive personalized phenotyping of individuals with autism. The impact of this approach is discussed to advance the development of tailored treatments options, enhance the ability to longitudinally track symptomatology, and to fundamentally empower affected individuals and their families. This book encompasses a new era for autism research and treatments, and our continuous effort to collectively empower and embrace the autistic community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume evolved from a workshop which addressed the general area of motor control, and the broader problems of serial organisation and sensory-motor integration of human skills. A number of specific issues are highlighted, including the neural mechanisms and disabilities of sensory-motor integration, planning and programming of action, the dynamics of interlimb coordination, amendment and updating mechanisms, and in particular, perception-action coupling and the representation of action. Underlying much of the volume are the major theoretical issues which include the debate between computational and prescriptive approaches versus the emergent properties and system dynamics approaches. The book represents a diverse approach from such disciplines as psychology, electrical and mechanical engineering, human movement studies, physiotherapy, neurology, and kinesiology.

Book excerpt: This book offers practical ideas on the combination of sensory integration theory principles with other evidence-based approaches in the evaluation and treatment of multifaceted issues in children with disabilities. Using the ICF Model, a Clinical Reasoning Model, and featuring numerous case studies, the opening chapters focus on the evidence for combining intervention approaches with diagnoses most often encountered in clinical practice. The latter half of the book covers the delivery of services using blended intervention approaches in different settings, such as the school, the hospital, and in nature. Featured are existing community programs illustrating the combination of approaches in practice. Appendices include reproducible resources, a guide to assessments, and approaches. The text will guide occupational therapists and other health professionals working with children and adolescents across a variety of settings in using clinical reasoning skills in a systematic manner that will lead to better interventions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the study of the computational structure of biological/robotic sensorimotor systems, distributed models have gained center stage in recent years, with a range of issues including self-organization, non-linear dynamics, field computing etc. This multidisciplinary research area is addressed here by a multidisciplinary team of contributors, who provide a balanced set of articulated presentations which include reviews, computational models, simulation studies, psychophysical, and neurophysiological experiments. The book is divided into three parts, each characterized by a slightly different focus: in part I, the major theme concerns computational maps which typically model cortical areas, according to a view of the sensorimotor cortex as "geometric engine" and the site of "internal models" of external spaces. Part II also addresses problems of self-organization and field computing, but in a simpler computational architecture which, although lacking a specialized cortical machinery, can still behave in a very adaptive and surprising way by exploiting the interaction with the real world. Finally part III is focused on the motor control issues related to the physical properties of muscular actuators and the dynamic interactions with the world. The reader will find different approaches on controversial issues, such as the role and nature of force fields, the need for internal representations, the nature of invariant commands, the vexing question about coordinate transformations, the distinction between hierachiacal and bi-directional modelling, and the influence of muscle stiffness.

Book excerpt: This volume describes new frontiers in medical and service robotics in the light of recent developments in technology to advance robot design and implementation. In particular, the work looks at advances in design, development and implementation of contemporary surgical, rehabilitation and biorobots. Surgical robots allow surgeons greater access to areas under operation using more precise and less invasive methods. Rehabilitation robots facilitate and support the lives of the infirm, elderly people, or those with dysfunction of body parts affecting movement. These robots are also used for rehabilitation and related procedures, such as training and therapy. Biorobots are designed to imitate the cognition of humans and animals. The need to substitute humans working on delicate, tiresome and monotonous tasks, or working with potentially health-damaging toxic materials, requires intelligent, high-performance service robots with the ability to cooperate, advanced communication and sophisticated perception and cognitive capabilities. Progress in this field is fast and results need to be disseminated to stimulate both practical applications and further research. Thus, these papers are a valuable addition to existing literature.
