Book excerpt: This book is about two women in their early fifties who decide to return to graduate school to work toward a Ph.D. in musicology. They don't know one another, they don't have any idea how taxing it will be, and they have been out of touch with recent scholarship. One of the women has five children and the other has two, but all are frisky and imaginative kids who keep up their antics to their mothers' despair. Their tales of adjustment to academic life, their interaction with the professors and classmates, and their attempt to survive confrontations with their children are sometimes hilarious and sometimes tragic, to say nothing of the medical obstacle that bars their path.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We wrote this book because so many academics find it daunting to navigate the search for an academic position. The workbook is designed with 58 worksheets and checklists dealing with everything from the imposter syndrome to crafting a cover letter that tells your unique story. Checklists are available for items to consider when crafting cover letters, interviews (whether on the telephone, by video or in person), and negotiating an offer. It was created to help newly minted academics, as well as those who may want to move laterally, to handle the pragmatic aspects of the job search. The information and necessary skills for this process are generally not taught in graduate school. The book is organized in seven essential sections: Part 1 introduces the academic job search cycle and outlines the various categories for hires. Part 2 helps you stay on top of your academic job search, from where to look to publishing plans.Part 3 give you various ways to organize and track your job search applications. Part 4 outlines the ten important pieces of your academic job search portfolio, and offers examples or templates for those elements. Part 5 presents the ins and outs of your academic job search interview, including handling conference, video and on site visits. Part 6 looks at additional considerations including some statistics on the academic job market and alternatives to the professoriate. Part 7 concludes by recapping some of the most important items to consider as you go through a month by month academic job search process. This book was developed by two coaches who have a combined work experience of over 40 years with academic clients who are unfamiliar with the nuts and bolts of seeking an academic position. The workbook offers real life up-to-date examples of the job search process from the applicant's point of view and is designed to reduce anxiety through concrete exercises and demystify the academic job search process.

Book excerpt: Why We Climb is a celebration, in word and image, of those aspects of the climbing life that are most universal, meaningful, and long lasting— the strong connection to partners and nature; the physical and mental mastery required (and how to achieve it); the rewards of exploring oneself and the world through climbing. Through interviews with some of North America’s most notable climbers the book undertakes a quest to find the soul of climbing— asking what compels men and women to dedicate their lives to the challenges and deprivations of living in a vertical world? What are the sacrifices and what are the rewards? And most importantly, can the lessons learned on cliff faces, frozen waterfalls, and alpine peaks— lessons of respect, discipline, commitment, humility and simplicity—be brought home and used to benefit society as a whole?

Book excerpt: This study examines the attitudes of administrators about sexual violence on campus, as well as their knowledge of disciplinary policies and procedures to prevent and redress rape and sexual assault on campuses. This study begins the discussion about how administrators understand their current policies as well as the attitudes that may affect their understandings. I use Thematic Analysis to analyze responses to a series of open-ended questions surveying participants on their attitudes towards their universities policy and procedures for handling sexual assault. Findings suggest that the participants have overwhelming confidence in the established policies, the extent of their knowledge of the policy is minimal and the education they receive from the university is lesser still.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ideally, universities are centers of learning, in which great researchers dispassionately search for truth, no matter how unpopular those truths must be. The marketplace of ideas assures that truth wins out against bias and prejudice. Yet, many people worry that there's rot in the heart of thehigher education business. In Cracks in the Ivory Tower, libertarian scholars Jason Brennan and Philip Magness reveal the problems are even worse than anyone suspects. Marshalling an array of data, they systematically show how contemporary American universities fall short of these ideals and how bad incentives make faculty, administrators, and students act unethically. While universities may at times excel at identifying and calling out injustice outside their gates, Brennan and Magness contend that individuals are primarily guided by self-interest at every level. They find that the problems are deep and pervasive:most academic marketing and advertising is semi-fraudulent; colleges and individual departments regularly make promises they do not and cannot keep; and most students cheat a little, while many cheat a lot. Trenchant and wide-ranging, they elucidate the many ways in which faculty and students alikehave every incentive to make teaching and learning secondary. In this revealing expose, Brennan and Magness bring to light many of the ethical problems universities, faculties, and students currently face. In turn, they reshape our understanding of how such high-powered institutions run their business.

When other climbing locales are buried in snow, Josh is basking in Southern California sunshine. Thousands of sport and traditional routes on park's distinctive domes offer climbers of all abilities endless variety, from classic, well-protected cracks to delicate friction faces and edgy vertical testpieces. Excellent bouldering abounds, and superb camping in the beautiful, high-desert environment encourages extended stays. Simply put, no climber's career is complete without at least one trip to Joshua Tree, and many people find themselves returning year after year. Rock Climbing Joshua Tree West is the first of two volumes that together replace Rock Climbing Joshua Tree, published in 1992 and 1986. Covering climbs in the western half of the park, completely revised and with thoroughly updated route information, and extensively illustrated, it's the climber's comprehensive and indispensable guide to the area.

Book excerpt: The Ivory Tower and the Marble Citadel opens up a new way of pursuing the critical development of political philosophy in today's intercultural intellectual arena. Metzger holds that political philosophies are linguistically unavoidable efforts to infer the principles of morally legitimate government from a maximally enlightened conceptualization of the universal human condition. Because these efforts depend on a vocabulary embodying culturally inherited premises, textual analysis uncovering these premises and debate about how they should be revised are crucial for the improvement of political philosophy.

Book excerpt: 'That politics was the most exciting of all the exciting things in the world I never doubted' Shirley Williams was born to politics. As well as being influenced by her mother, Vera Brittan, her father George Catlin, a leading political scientist, encouraged his daughter to have high ambitions for herself - including daring to climb the bookshelves in his library. Elected as MP for Hitchin in 1964, she was a member of the Wilson and Callaghan governments and was also the Secretary of State for Education. As one of the 'Gang of Four' Shirley Williams famously broke away from the Labour Party to found the SDP in 1981 and later supported its merger with the Liberal Party to form the Liberal Democrats. This is her story. Praise for Climbing the Bookshelves 'Very few politicians are loved, but Shirley Williams was one' Independent 'She speaks human, which is a surprisingly rare political talent' Guardian 'Decent, sensible, honest and endearing, this book is Shirley Williams to a T' The Times
