Book excerpt: "During the Victorian era the monkey puzzle tree became a very prominent feature of the British and Irish landscape. Ironically, there could not have been a more idiosyncratic tree to epitomise the eccentricities associated with the Victorian era. The monkey puzzle was considered a great novelty due to its exotic and bizzare shape which led to a planting frenzy, some landowners even planted it in avenues leading up to their equally exotic stately homes. ..." --Taken from the foreword.

Book excerpt: In a picturesque English village, residents prepare for an amateur production in the grounds of their manor house. Against the backdrop of World War II looming in the background, the play becomes a microcosm reflecting the anxieties, hopes, and societal changes of the time. Through Virginia Woolf's distinctive narrative style, each character's inner world is intricately woven into the fabric of the performance, blurring the lines between reality and theatricality. Between the Acts stands as Virginia Woolf's final novel, completing her exploration of experimental narrative techniques and modernist themes. Published posthumously in 1941, the novel continues Woolf's profound literary legacy of challenging conventional storytelling and delving into the complexities of human consciousness. VIRGINIA WOOLF [1882–1941] was an English author. With novels like Jacob’s Room [1922], Mrs Dalloway [1925], To the Lighthouse [1927], and Orlando [1928], she became a leading figure of modernism and is considered one of the most important English-language authors of the 20th century. As a thinker, with essays like A Room of One’s Own [1929], Woolf has influenced the women’s movement in many countries.

Book excerpt: In this particular story, Olly goes to see a pantomime called “Jack and the Beanstalk;” this fired up his imagination about growing things. When Olly got back home after the pantomime, he went over to a fruit bowl. He found some nuts in the bottom of the bowl and he asked what they would grow into. As he lay in his bed that night, he had an amazing dream. In that dream, Olly dreamt about a special magic tree called the Ollykin tree. This led him to have a series of other exciting dreams too. In these later dreams, he became the something of a local hero. He became the owner of a large farm and he was able to feed the world. This story aims to show young readers how important it is to grow and to nurture living things. With so many young people now living and growing up in towns and cities few of them get to see how their food is produced. It is also a sad fact that few are aware of the environmental costs to the planet when food is grown a long way from those that need it. This book also makes readers aware of the importance of self-sufficiency in respect to preventing local food shortages. The story also points out that much agricultural land that is currently built on would be better used as agricultural land to produce food for local communities, ( a point which those on council planning committees and government ministers would be wise to take into account when making planning decisions concerning green-field sites). This book is also designed to make young people aware of the suffering of others in far away countries where climate change and seasonal abnormalities damage and destroy crop yields. It seeks to show how those reliant upon such crops can find themselves on the verge of starvation. The story also, highlights the importance of overseas assistance in some cases; not just on a short-term aid basis, but in helping those affected by climate based food shortages, to adjust and to produce hardier crops. .

Book excerpt: ''The world was always a beautiful place to live in.'' This saying is speculated by the lives other than that of the humans. A thought about the world being turned into a materialistic one created solely for the benefit of humans alone, for them to love, live and perish in glory. Every country, city, culture, or kingdom, in their pinnacle of decadence, there emerges a factor that wipes out all that was affected, in due course, the factor in itself and paves way for the good, kind and the righteous to take over the future. Similarly, a situation arises when the other lives realize that the world has to be reinstated and there could be a fresh start in order to establish a free and happier world for everyone. The book is a work of fantasy fiction, from the eyes of the lives other than the humans, depicting decadence and the rise of a noble kingdom that served well to all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling account of the extraordinary relatives of ordinary garden conifers. Leading expert Aljos Farjon provides a compelling narrative that observes conifers from the standpoint of the curious naturalist. It starts with the basic question of what conifers are and continues to explore their evolution, taxonomy, ecology, distribution, human uses, and issues of conservation. As the story unfolds many popular misconceptions are dispelled, such as the false notion that all conifers have cones. The extraordinary diversity of conifers begins to dawn as Farjon describes the diminutive creeping shrub Microcachrys tetragona, whose strange seed cones resemble raspberries, and the prehistoric-looking Araucaria meulleri. The taxonomic diversity of conifers is huge and Farjon goes on to relate how, over the course of 300 million years, these trees and shrubs have adapted to survive geological upheavals, climatic extremes, and formidable competition from flowering plants. All who seek to learn more about the early history of life on our planet will cherish this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this remarkable book, Martha Hailey DuBose has given those multitudes of readers who love the mystery novel an indispensable addition to their libraries. Unlike other works on the subject, Women of Mystery is not merely a directory of the novelists and their publications with a few biographical details. DuBose combines extensive research into the lives of significant women mystery writers from Anna Katherine Green and Mary Roberts Rinehart with critical essays on their work, anecdotes, contemporary reviews and opinions and some of the women's own comments. She takes us through the Golden Age of the British women mystery writers, Christie, Sayers, Marsh, Allingham and Tey, to the leading crime novelists of today, focused on the women who have become legends of the genre. And though she laments, "so many mysteries, so little time," she makes a good effort a mentioning "some of the best of the rest." When DuBose writes of the lives of her principal players, she relates them to their times, their families, their personal situations and above all to their books. She subtly points out that Sayers, whose experience with the men in her life was inevitably disastrous, created in Lord Peter the ideal lover -- one who is all that a woman desires and needs. DuBose gives us the curriculum vitae that Dorothy Sayers created to help her bring Peter Wimsey to a virtual actuality. Ngaio Marsh would give up an active presence in the theatrical world she loved, but she recreated it for herself as well as her readers in many of her novels. The biographies of these woman are as engrossing as the stories they wrote, and Martha DuBose has shined a different, intimate and intriguing light on them, their works, and the lives that informed those works. This book is so full of treasure it's hard to see how any mystery enthusiast will be able to do without it. And what a gift it would make for anyone on your list who has been heard to announce "I love a mystery." Some of the treats inside: In the Beginning: The Mothers of Detection Anna Katherine Green Mary Roberts Rinehart A Golden Era: The Genteel Puzzlers Agatha Christie Dorothy L. Sayers Ngaio Marsh Margery Allingham Josephine Tey Modern Motives: Mysteries of the Murderous Mind Patricia Highsmith P.D. James Ruth Rendell Mary Higgins Clark Sue Grafton and more!!

Book excerpt: The category of vision is significant for Modernist texts as well as for the unfolding discourse of Modernism itself. Within the general Modernist fascination with the artistic and experimental possibilities of vision and perception this study looks at Virginia Woolf’s novels and her critical writings and examines the relation between visuality and aesthetics. An aesthetics of vision, as this study argues, becomes a productive principle of narrative. The visual is not only pertinent to Woolf’s processes of composition, but her works create a kind of vision that is proper to the text itself – a vision that reflects on the experience of seeing and renegotiates the relation between the reader and the text. The study investigates key dimensions of aesthetic vision. It addresses vision in the context of theories of aesthetic experience and identifies a semantics of seeing. It analyses functions of symbolic materiality in the presentation of boundaries of perception, modes of temporality and poetic potentialities. In exploring the connections between vision and language, it seeks to provide new perspectives for a reassessment of what occurs in Modernism's relation to vision.
