Book excerpt: The probability model of areal coverage of weather conditions that was published in the Journal of Applied Meteorology (1979) is applied to extend the usefulness of climatic records of station sky cover (tenths) and ceiling height (meters) to the estimation of cloud presence at any level in the atmosphere or within any layer. Specifically, estimates are made of: (a) the average cloud cover as a function of the vertical distance above the ground, (b) the average amount of cloud presence, in layers or at individual levels, and (c) the probability distribution of cloud cover, from clear to overcast, at any level or in any layer between two levels.

Climatological statistics of the probability of cloud cover would be useful to tactical commanders planning missions over hostile or contested territory where observations are unavailable. This report presents tables of the historical probability, by okta, of cumulative cloud cover at or below 15 given altitudes. The data consist of routine surface weather observations from the ETAC DATSAV database. Out of 41 stations considered from four regions (Germany, Korea, the Middle East, and Central America), 29 stations had data suitable for analysis. Analyses performed for each station were broken down by season and time of day (0000 to 0559, 0600 to 1159, 1200 to 1759, and 1800 to 2359 local time), then averaged separately over season and over time of day, and over all seasons and times of day. Graphical and tabular results are presented for all stations for the average over all seasons and time of day; and for a selected station (Bitburg, West Germany) averages by season and time of day are given. The full set of tables is available on tape. Another goal is to answer the question: suppose that a remote measurement indicates that a cloud is or is not present at or below a given altitude, how much additional information does this measurement add to the historical probabilities--i.e. how much different are the conditional probabilities of cumulative cloud cover given that a cloud is or is not reported compared to the unconditional (historical) probabilities? Tables of these conditional probabilities are presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clouds and Their Climatic Impacts Clouds are an influential and complex element of Earth’s climate system. They evolve rapidly in time and exist over small spatial scales, but also affect global radiative balance and large-scale circulations. With more powerful models and extensive observations now at our disposal, the climate impact of clouds is receiving ever more research attention. Clouds and Their Climatic Impacts: Radiation, Circulation, and Precipitation presents an overview of our current understanding on various types of clouds and cloud systems and their multifaceted role in the radiative budget, circulation patterns, and rainfall. Volume highlights include: Interactions of aerosol with both liquid and ice clouds Surface and atmospheric cloud radiative feedbacks and effects Arctic, extratropical, and tropical clouds Cloud-circulation coupling at global, meso, and micro scales Precipitation efficiency, phase, and measurements The role of machine learning in understanding clouds and climate The American Geophysical Union promotes discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity. Its publications disseminate scientific knowledge and provide resources for researchers, students, and professionals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results are presented of a study of cloud cover over Korea and Germany, to obtain mesoscale cloud climatologies in data-void regions. Two methods for modeling the climatological frequency distribution of total cloud cover are discussed, a simple linear regression called the Simplified Linear Model (SLM), and Gringorten's Model B. Both models fit the data well. Map analyses of the parameters from both models show definite mesoscale geographic patterns in Korea. This may enable the development of methods for obtaining the cloud cover frequency at locations where there are no data. More data are needed to complete such a study. Similar analyses in Germany reveal no obvious geographic relationships for the SLM parameters, and almost no gradient for Model B parameters. The advantage of both models over others is their realistic values for clear and overcast cases. Specific advantages are, for the SLM, its simplicity, and for Model B, its ability to model cloud covers for areas different from that of observer's field of view. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clouds continue to be a large source of uncertainty within global climate models. While satellites provide the only global datasets for comparison with these models, satellite retrievals provide inferences of cloud properties, rather than direct measurements. Therefore, comparisons between climate model simulations and satellite retrievals require careful construction of globally-gridded and time-averaged (Level 3) satellite datasets. For some types of comparisons, existing Level 3 datasets may not be sufficient, necessitating the generation of gridded datasets directly from Level 2 products. The current study uses a filtering and gridding algorithm to create a customized globally-gridded (i.e., Level 3) dataset based on Aqua MODIS Level 2 cloud top pressure and cloud optical property retrievals. With the recent release of MODIS Collection 6, we utilize this algorithm to examine the differences between cloud parameters in the MODIS Collection 5 and Collection 6 datasets, and then compare these satellite measurements to the GISS-E2-H model-simulated cloud parameters that were provided for the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project - Phase 5 (CMIP5). This comparison study focuses on the vertical distribution of cloud liquid water and ice, especially in the mid-troposphere where mixed-phase clouds are most likely to occur. Results show that the cloud retrieval algorithm improvements with MODIS Collection 6 lead to an overall decrease in uncertainty in cloud water path retrievals, as well as a change in the vertical distribution of clouds (high clouds higher, low clouds lower) and the resulting vertical distribution of cloud water path (increased mid-level cloud water path). When MODIS Collection 6 data are compared with GISS-E2-H climate model simulations, it is clear that the model greatly overestimates ice water path within a double ITCZ (intertropical convergence zone) in the high cloud height regime, but underestimates ice water path in higher latitudes. The model also overestimates low level liquid water path over land, especially over mountainous regions. The filtering and gridding algorithm used in this study is a convenient tool for building custom gridded datasets to address research questions that the official Level 3 datasets were not designed for. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an up-to-date review of our current understanding of climate change in the North Sea and adjacent areas, as well as its impact on ecosystems and socio-economic sectors. It provides a detailed assessment of climate change based on published scientific work compiled by independent international experts from climate-related disciplines such as oceanography, atmospheric sciences, marine and terrestrial ecology, using a regional evaluation and review process similar to that of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It provides a comprehensive overview of all aspects of our changing climate, discussing a wide range of topics including past, current and future climate change, and climate-related changes in marine, terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. It also explores the impact of climate change on socio-economic sectors such as fisheries, agriculture, coastal zone management, coastal protection, urban climate, recreation/tourism, offshore activities/energy, and air pollution.
