Socio-economic and demographic data from the household survey is integrated with meteorological and spatial data to conduct an integrated analysis. Quantitative analysis is also supplemented by qualitative information. Given the context of ongoing climate change, the livelihoods issues of a highly marginalized Chepang community form the center-point of analysis. The book demonstrates that balanced assets possession is a prerequisite to strengthen the adaptive capacity of the households. Furthermore, the ability of translating adaptive capacity into adaptation actions is determined by the households’ ability to correctly perceive the changes and their access to various assets. The book recommends to ensure the availability of non-farm livelihood opportunities along with access to formal/vocational education and skill development training as these are the key factors contributing to reduce the vulnerability. The book concludes that mainstreaming of climate change into development efforts is a must for sustainable development.

Nepal is an agriculture-based country where more than 65% of the population engages in agriculture for livelihood and agriculture shares about 33% of its GDP at current price and 35% at 2000/2001 constant price. The study dealt about the implications of climate change in the outskirts of Kathmandu valley. The study was completed in Purano Naikap area which is one of the topographic representatives of the foothills of Kathmandu valley. Many cases of adverse effects of climate change were found in the study area such as untimely rain, infestation of alien grass species, infection of viral disease in tomato and paddy plants, invasion of different harmful insects like GabaroKiraand Green Caterpillar. The fields were left barren due to drought in the lands where it used to be wetland throughout the year. There is lack of irrigation facilities and lack of manpower for agriculture.

Book excerpt: The negative impacts of climate change disproportionately affect rural communities in developing countries that rely on agriculture and other natural resources for their sustenance and livelihoods. Climate change impacts are also projected to slow economic growth, hindering current poverty alleviation efforts and creating new poverty traps for the most economically disadvantaged. Understanding climate change resilience for these communities requires assessment of their environmental and social resources as well as the social institutions that support them. This mixed-methods thesis was conducted in the high hills of the Himalayas in Jumla, Nepal. A total of two months were spent with communities in Jumla. Surveys of farmer perceptions of shifting temperature and precipitation patterns and intraspecific bean crop diversity were conducted (n=24). Beans are a nutritionally, culturally, and economically important staple crop to the region, but prior research on its intraspecific diversity and the potential stress-resilience of traditional varieties was limited. This study found a promising amount of phenotypic diversity, with interviewees identifying on average 11 varieties grown per household. Ethnographic observations, including a home-stay, also occurred throughout the work. These observations shed light on location-specific social barriers faced by primary agricultural decision-makers in Niyapaani village, a primarily low-caste, Dalit, community. Though not generally recognized as the head-of-household, women are making primary agricultural decisions in Jumla, and are challenged by social gender and caste marginalization in the region. Understanding better the social factors such as these in Jumla informs how climate change adaptive capacity building and participatory approaches are designed and executed. This research highlights the importance of fine-tuning and tailoring climate change resilience strategies and participatory work for specific settings, concluding with recommendations for further work in Jumla.

Book excerpt: In recent decades, about 80% of the farmers in Himalayan region of Nepal who depend on agriculture for survival have experienced both positive and negative impacts from climate change that challenge their abilities to sustain their livelihoods. In this context, this study evaluates the socio-economic and demographic characteristics that shape farmers' perceptions about climate-change, to identify the major impacts of climate change on Nepal's Lower Mustang agriculture, and to determine the barriers against and opportunities for adaptation initiatives that mitigate the impacts of climate change. Data were collected in several ways: farmers were surveyed, key informants were interviewed, and focus-group discussions were held. The secondary data included thirty-year (1987-2017), temperature and rainfall data of Jomsom and Marpha, two of four study sites in Lower Mustang to match the farmers' perceptions of climate change trend over the last three-four decades in the region. The results of farmers' perceptions indicate rising temperature, unstable and unpredictable rainfall patterns, and decreased snowfall over the last 30-40 years are the main evidence of climate change in Lower Mustang as .These perceptions tend to align with temperature and rainfall data collected at Jomsom and Marpha between 1987 and 2017. Of the major impacts, increasingly favorable climate conditions for vegetable farming and the evolution of farmers' pro-environmental attitudes are perceived by farmers and leaders as having positive influence on expected future outlooks. Declining apple productivity in lower elevations, increasing insect infestations and diseases among crops, adversity for livestock production, increasing frequency of flash floods, increasing soil erosion, and increasing debris flows are outcomes perceived as negative effects from regional climate change. Farmers' adaptation strategies to mitigate the consequences of climate change in Lower Mustang include diversification of crops (vegetables, fruit, and fodder); increased use of insecticides and pesticides; gradual shifting of apple farming to hospitable elevations; the introduction of disease, pest, and heat resistant hybrid crops and livestock; and river water and rainwater harvesting. In addition to these efforts, , Mothers Groups in Lower Mustang have been instrumental in three key administrative arenas: financial management, environmental management, and empowering women . which directly and indirectly enhanced women's adaptive capacity among farmers in Lower Mustang. The key barriers to adaptation of agriculture in Lower Mustang are governance and the socio-economic conditions of farmers. The state of the barriers needed to be rectified are the minimal availability of public outreach and extension services, no well-planned adaptation initiatives, poor information flow, scant resources, limited budgets, and poor disaster-management. Likewise, socio-economic factors, such as the ages, incomes, genders, castes, and ethnicities of farmers impede the development of adaptation and resilience-building capacities. In spite of these barriers, locally elected government and community governance along with farmers' collaborative effort seems to have significantly shaped adaptation initiatives and strategies in Lower Mustang.
