Book Synopsis Climate Change Science: High Quality Greenhouse Gas Emissions Data are a Cornerstone of Programs to Address Climate Change by : John Stephenson
Download or read book Climate Change Science: High Quality Greenhouse Gas Emissions Data are a Cornerstone of Programs to Address Climate Change written by John Stephenson and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elevated levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and the resulting effects on the earth's climate could have significant impacts in the U.S. and internationally. The U.S. Congress is considering proposals to limit greenhouse gas emissions using market-based mechanisms that would place a price on emissions. A greenhouse gas mitigation program requires an understanding of the emissions sources of 6 major greenhouse gases -- carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and several synthetic gases. This testimony focuses on: (1) the importance of quality data on emissions in the context of a program intended to limit greenhouse gas emissions; and (2) key considerations in developing reliable data on greenhouse gas emissions. Book Synopsis Greenhouse Gases - Capturing, Utilization and Reduction by : Corbin Tennyson
Download or read book Greenhouse Gases - Capturing, Utilization and Reduction written by Corbin Tennyson and published by . This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many chemical compounds present in Earth's atmosphere behave as 'greenhouse gases'. A greenhouse gas is any gaseous compound in the atmosphere that is capable of absorbing infrared radiation, thereby trapping and holding heat in the atmosphere. These gases are the fundamental cause of the greenhouse effect. Increases in the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere enhances the greenhouse effect which is creating global warming and consequently climate change. By increasing the heat in the atmosphere, greenhouse gases are responsible for the greenhouse effect, which ultimately leads to global warming. About 30 percent of the radiation striking the Earth is reflected back out to space by clouds, ice and other reflective surfaces. The remaining 70 percent is absorbed by the oceans, the land and the atmosphere. As they absorb radiation and heat up, the oceans, land and atmosphere release heat in the form of infrared thermal radiation, which passes out of the atmosphere into space. Greenhouse gases are largely responsible for the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect, in turn, is one of the leading causes of global warming. The most significant greenhouse gases are water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). Those that are man-made include the chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydro fluorocarbons (HFCs) and Per fluorocarbons (PFCs), as well as sulfur hexafluoride (SF6).

Book Synopsis Primer on Greeenhouse Gases by : Donald J. Wuebbles
Download or read book Primer on Greeenhouse Gases written by Donald J. Wuebbles and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1991-07-24 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Primer on Greeenhouse Gases provides an excellent reference resource that brings together the most current information available on greenhouse gases. Each of the gases featured is recognized as important to the future state of global atmospheric chemistry and climate. The direct radiative importance of each gas to climate, its role as a radiative precursor, and how it functions as an intermediate constituent because of its chemical activities are provided. Knowns, unknowns, and uncertainties for each gas are described. This new book reveals information critical to developing an understanding of the role of energy and atmospheric chemical and radiative processes in determining atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases.
Book Synopsis Verifying Greenhouse Gas Emissions by : National Research Council
Download or read book Verifying Greenhouse Gas Emissions written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-07-28 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world's nations are moving toward agreements that will bind us together in an effort to limit future greenhouse gas emissions. With such agreements will come the need for all nations to make accurate estimates of greenhouse gas emissions and to monitor changes over time. In this context, the present book focuses on the greenhouse gases that result from human activities, have long lifetimes in the atmosphere and thus will change global climate for decades to millennia or more, and are currently included in international agreements. The book devotes considerably more space to CO2 than to the other gases because CO2 is the largest single contributor to global climate change and is thus the focus of many mitigation efforts. Only data in the public domain were considered because public access and transparency are necessary to build trust in a climate treaty. The book concludes that each country could estimate fossil-fuel CO2 emissions accurately enough to support monitoring of a climate treaty. However, current methods are not sufficiently accurate to check these self-reported estimates against independent data or to estimate other greenhouse gas emissions. Strategic investments would, within 5 years, improve reporting of emissions by countries and yield a useful capability for independent verification of greenhouse gas emissions reported by countries.
