Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change will exert an enormous impact on all societies in the medium to long term. Tourism, as both a commercial activity and social phenomenon is not immune. To date, industry has been slow to recognise the scale of the threat posed by a changing climate on its operations and consumers have been extremely reluctant to modify their travel behaviours. The Asia Pacific region is well on the way to being the 21st Century powerhouse of tourism, however the manner in which it develops will, in part, be determined by how the global community responds to climate change. This book examines climate change issues related to tourism in the Asia Pacific region. Chapters discuss demand and supply side issues, explore government policy responses and introduce several new adaptation models. The book also calls for a more effective linking of social science research with the scientific discourse to create long term resolution of and adaptation to this issue. This book was published as a special issue of Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contribution of tourism to climate change, and the likely consequences of climate change for key tourist destinations, has been well reported and discussed. Yet, there is a lack of evidence-based systematic practical advice as to how the tourism industry should respond to the challenge of climate change. Building on a sound conceptual understanding of the links between climate change and tourism, this book shows how the tourism sector might best respond. It not only focuses on the roles of supportive policies and institutions in ensuring a strong "enabling environment" for practical responses, but also on the practical responses themselves. This practical approach is presented through a large number of case studies and examples which illustrate how policy and industry initiatives have been implemented in tourism, and if or why they were successful. The majority of examples come from places such as the Caribbean, Spain, the Maldives, Nepal, and the UK, as well as Australia, New Zealand and other parts of the Pacific. The examples are presented within an overall framework that facilitates the translation of adaptation and mitigation policies into practice. This book offers the tourism industry, students and academics the opportunity to advance from the earlier, more conceptual texts on tourism and climate change by taking a much more practical approach. Its global coverage, through the use of international case studies, fosters a cross-fertilisation of ideas and initiatives. This text provides a detailed analysis of best practices in the face of climate change, across countries and geographically diverse tourist destinations and operations.

Book Synopsis Policy Responses to Climate Change in the Australian Tourism Industry by : Brian Weir
Download or read book Policy Responses to Climate Change in the Australian Tourism Industry written by Brian Weir and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "Climate change and its expected impacts will affect many, if not all, areas of human activity over time. While much work has been done on the science of climate change (e.g.,Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, 2018), the study of the impacts and possible responses for the tourism industry is less well-developed (e.g., Prideaux et al., 2016).This gap is important because the impacts of climate change - rising temperatures, changes in rainfall and shifts in rainfall patterns, as well as the expected manifestations of these make tourism a business sector likely to be particularly vulnerable (Weir & Dickson, 2012).Further, much of the current research has been done in iconic and particularly vulnerable destinations, such as ski resorts (Scott, 2016) and small tropical islands (Belle and Bramwell2005). Little work has been done on developing policy responses for destinations more representative of the broader tourism industry - destinations of moderate size in temperate environments also facing climate change. This thesis investigated this gap in such a destination, Canberra Australia, aiming to illuminate more broadly how the Australian tourism industry could respond to climate change. The research identified insights related to possible lessons from the past, the connections between climate change adaptation and sustainability, policy and organisational decision-making, and the importance of organisational role and placement inconsidering climate change and possible responses."

Book excerpt: The National Climate Change Adaptation Framework identified tourism as one key sector vulnerable to the impacts of climate change in Australia. This paper evaluates how nine government tourism agencies are responding to the issue of climate change in Australia. Information on climate change, sustainability and going green is drawn from the corporate websites, annual reports, tourism plans, fact sheets, and case studies produced by these government tourism agencies from 2007 to 2010. The paper critically evaluates how government tourism agencies are addressing climate change issues, by promoting carbon reduction initiatives and carbon offsetting schemes for tourism operators. Climate change tourism responses are more developed in Australian states with climate change policies and in destinations vulnerable to the impacts of climate change or dependent on long haul travellers.
Book Synopsis Disappearing Destinations by : Andrew L. Jones
Download or read book Disappearing Destinations written by Andrew L. Jones and published by CABI. This book was released on 2011 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current climatic and environmental trends mean that a large number of important coastal destinations across the globe are under threat of change or gradual disappearance. Many of these locations are also significant tourist destinations, such as the Great Barrier Reef, the Everglades National Park or large swathes of the Mediterranean basin. Tourism activity both exacerbates the problem and highlights the importance of protecting these often fragile environments. This book discusses threats to, and consequences of, tourism growth and the impacts of climate change on such coastal zones. It examines policy initiatives, local and national options for managing the potential crisis and recommends steps and management options towards ameliorating projected impacts on coastal tourism infrastructure. This is an important book for researchers and students of leisure and tourism, land-use planning, environmental and coastal management and all those interested in and working with the environment, conservation and sustainability.
