Book Synopsis Chansons of the 16th Century for Classical Guitar by : Richard Metzger
Download or read book Chansons of the 16th Century for Classical Guitar written by Richard Metzger and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2011-02-24 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of chansons printed in various collections between 1529 and 1543 by Pierre Attaingnant, the inventor of single-impression printing. the arrangement of chansons for lute or keyboard was an important source of instrumental music in the sixteenth century. the chansons in the present anthology, the fruits of a particularly rich period in French music, are modern arrangements for guitar or lute made in accordance with procedures found in French prints of the time. the musical styles range from the serious, imitative Franco-Flemish chanson of northern composers to the charming, light-hearted, and often ribald chansons that furnished musical entertainment in early sixteenth-century Paris. Although the arrangements are instrumental, text translations are furnished to aid in interpretation of the music and to amuse the modern reader as they amused the listener in the 1530s and 1540s. Standard notation only.

Book Synopsis Luxury Arts of the Renaissance by : Marina Belozerskaya
Download or read book Luxury Arts of the Renaissance written by Marina Belozerskaya and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2005-10-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today we associate the Renaissance with painting, sculpture, and architecture—the “major” arts. Yet contemporaries often held the “minor” arts—gem-studded goldwork, richly embellished armor, splendid tapestries and embroideries, music, and ephemeral multi-media spectacles—in much higher esteem. Isabella d’Este, Marchesa of Mantua, was typical of the Italian nobility: she bequeathed to her children precious stone vases mounted in gold, engraved gems, ivories, and antique bronzes and marbles; her favorite ladies-in-waiting, by contrast, received mere paintings. Renaissance patrons and observers extolled finely wrought luxury artifacts for their exquisite craftsmanship and the symbolic capital of their components; paintings and sculptures in modest materials, although discussed by some literati, were of lesser consequence. This book endeavors to return to the mainstream material long marginalized as a result of historical and ideological biases of the intervening centuries. The author analyzes how luxury arts went from being lofty markers of ascendancy and discernment in the Renaissance to being dismissed as “decorative” or “minor” arts—extravagant trinkets of the rich unworthy of the status of Art. Then, by re-examining the objects themselves and their uses in their day, she shows how sumptuous creations constructed the world and taste of Renaissance women and men.
