Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cost and Methods of Clearing Land in the Lake States At the present time very little logged-ofi' land that would make de sirable farm land can be bought for less than $15 to $25 per acre. As the cost of clearing varies from $20 to $90 per acre, the cost of farm land cleared of stumps Will run from $35 to 8115 per acre, the average being about 865. When the cost of other necessary improvements is added to this, it makes the ultimate cost of an improved farm higher than the price of equally as good a farm in many Of the older, Well settled agricultural sections of the United States. The high price of the logged-off land and the high cost of clearing seriously retard its development. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cost and Methods of Clearing Land in Western Washington Much of the agricultural-land in the United States was at one time occupied by forests. Although a large area of this land has been cleared of brush and stumps, little has been published concerning the methods and cost of preparing stump land for the plow. In several sections of the country this question is yet an important one, but it is of the utmost importance in western Washington, where the land is for the most part covered with evergreen timber. Lum bering has been for years the leading industry of this section, result ing in large areas being stripped of merchantable timber and leaving what is locally called logged-off land, known in other States as out over land. The difference between the logged-off lands of western Washington and the cut-over lands of other States is chiefly in the size of the stumps. Cut-over lands are generally quite easily cleared, while to bring logged-off land under cultivation with primitive methods has been very laborious and expensive. This land as left by the logger is thickly studded with stumps, snags, and trees unfit for lumber, among which logs, tree tops, and under brush are strewn (fig. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forest-Land Owners of Southern New England The most common reason given by fore land owners for harvesting timber was la clearing. Thirty percent of those owners harvested timber indicated land-clearing their reason for doing so. However, these 0 ers own only 11 percent of all the land held owners who have harvested timber. Owners of 26 percent of the land held past harvesters said they harvested their ti ber because it was mature. They account 14 percent of the owners who harvested. Ten percent of the owners harvested timas part Of a timber-stand cultural treatment. These owners hold 13 percent of the forest land held by owners who have harvested. Three reasons for harvesting - timber salvage, har vesting recommended by a forester, and cul tural treatment - all imply a conscious effort on the part of the owner to improve the con dition of his forest land. All together, 20 per cent Of those Southern New England owners who have harvested timber did so for one of these reasons. They own 22 percent Of the forest land held by harvesting owners (fig. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Clearing and Grubbing Methods and Cost More than half the tillable area of the United States was originally forest. East of the Mississippi there was comparatively little arable land not covered with trees 200 years ago. Of the acres of farm land now under cultivation, it is a conservative estimate that 50 per cent had to be cleared and stumped before it could be cropped. Assuming, then, that acres of farm land in America have been cleared and grubbed at an average cost of only $10 an acre, there has been expended for this work. The staggering size of this sum would naturally lead a person to expect to find many books on the subject of clearing and grubbing, but the' present book is the first and only one of its kind. By state and federal departments of government there have been published a number of valuable bulletins on the subject, but in none of these is there to be found even a general review of all the different methods of clearing trees and removing stumps. Beside collecting into this book all the valuable information contained in bulletins, I have also compiled all that I could find in periodical literature. In addition I have abstracted from catalogs of manufacturers a considerable amount of excellent material. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Du Pont Farmers' Handbook: Instructions in the Use of High Explosives for Clearing Land, Planting and Cultivating Trees, Drainage, Ditching and Subsoiling Ever since the first white man started a permanent settlement in this country, the transformation of forests into farms has been carried on continually and at an ever-increasing speed. So great is the magnitude of the land clearing operations today, so large is the annual expenditure in this work, that it has become a factor of prime importance in the national economy and the necessity for a careful study of all its phases to the end of improving the various methods now in practice, is everywhere recognized. If, after the passing of the wood chopper and the sawmill, the land were ready for the plow, there would be no problem to solve; but a great area covered with stumps, thirty, fifty, a hundred, two hundred to the acre - with a number of boulders scattered here and there - is very far from a crop-bearing condition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Land Reclamation Policies in the United States Those who have had Government reclamation work in charge, and those who have favored Federal control have held that State control of the water in many instances has hampered them in the carrying out of their policies. However, the United States reclama tion act itself confirms and strengthens the policy laid down by the act of 1866, by providing that (sec. 8) nothing in the act shall be construed as affecting or intended to affect State laws providing for the control of water used in irrigation, and that in carrying out the provisions of the act the Secretary of the Interior shall proceed in conformity with such laws.
