Book excerpt: This book is a record of a symposium, "Ultrafiltration Membranes and Applications," which was held at the l78th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Washington, D.C., September 11-13, 1979. In organlzlng these sessions, I hoped to provide a comprehensive survey of the current state of ultrafiltration theory, the most recent advances in membrane technology, and a thorough treatment of existing applications and future directions for ultrafiltration. For me, the symposium was an outstanding success. It was a truly international forum with stimulating presentations and an enthusiastic audience. I hope that some of this spirit has spilled over into this volume, which is intended to reach a much wider audience. I am indebted to the Division of Colloid and Surface Chemistry of the American Chemical Society for their sponsorship. ANTHONY R. COOPER Palo Alto, California }larch, 1980 vii CONTENTS PART I. Book excerpt: This book covers the ultrafiltration membranes, specifically focusing on the elements that are produced using PVDF technology and out-side-in configuration. It specifically targets ultrafiltration technology as a pretreatment of seawater reverse osmosis desalination process. However, what is described in the book can be leveraged in other ultrafiltration membrane types. It explains how to significantly improve the efficiency of the process.

This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Produced water is a major waste produced from oil and natural gas wells in the state of Texas. This water could be a possible source of new fresh water to meet the growing demands of the state after treatment and purification. This thesis describes a research project that evaluated the treatment of brine generated in oil fields (produced water) with ultrafiltration membranes. The characteristics of various ultrafiltration membranes for oil and suspended solids removal from produced water were studied to test whether they could be used in a pretreatment method. The research measured the effect of pressure and flow rate on performance of three commercially available membranes for treatment of oily produced water. Oil and suspended solids removal were measured by using turbidity and oil in water measurements taken periodically. The study also analyzed the flux through the membrane and any effect it had on membrane performance. The research showed that an ultrafiltration membrane provided turbidity removal of over 99% and oil removal of 78% for the produced water samples. The results indicated that the ultrafiltration membranes would be useful as one of the first steps in purifying the water. Membrane cleaning of produced water-fouled membranes by micellar solutions was investigated. A neutral pH and ambient temperature micelle solution for effective cleaning of oily water-fouled membranes was developed and studied. The performance of cleaning solutions on ultrafiltration membranes was investigated on laboratory size membrane testing equipment. Different micro emulsion solutions were studied to evaluate the effect of solution properties on cleaning performance. Three types of multiple membranes were studied, each having the same polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) material but with different nominal separation or flux characteristics. The data showed that the use of a micelle solution to clean the produced water-fouled membranes was a feasible and effective method. The study showed with further adjustment of the micelle solution the cleaning effectiveness could be optimized to provide double the effectiveness of current industry methods for membranes fouled by produced water.

Book excerpt: Concerns over possible waterborne disease forced drinking water supply companies in England and Wales to adopt microfiltration and ultrafiltration technologies rapidly. MF and UF membrane plants are designed to produce water of a consistent quality regardless of throughput and fluctuations in the feedwater quality. To operate well they need to maintain flux and balance the rate of fouling, and chemical cleaning performance is critical to this. Giant steps have been taken into characterizing the foulants scientifically in the last few years while cleaning is reactive and ad hoc. This thesis explores the basis for a corresponding cleaning science for the technology to develop quantitively. Cleaning performance was defined in terms of a response to combinations of explanatory variables in a materials limited cleaning envelope. The study focused on applying variations of cleanant concentration, applied temperature and soak times to a variety of membranes fouled with different waters and regimes. An experimental design was developed and applied consistently to a number of different sampled sites; allowing an optimised recovery from the polynomial expressions for each treatment, through factorial analysis of the data. The size and variety of the data set analysed allowed comparison and quantification of the different deviations from optimal cleaning response. This effect was seen to vary temporally and with operating regime and the methods usefulness as a practical tool in the membrane plant lifecycle was considered. Cost evaluation of the variation in cleaning response showed that sub-optimal cleaning costs and energy use may be significant and the thesis also illustrated how module geometry affects initial cake deposition and thus cleanability. By demonstrating the potential for cleaning factor analysis, the potential for a combined heuristic and predictive cleaning control science is possible, but will need new strategies to manage technology change.

Book excerpt: The developments of membrane technology are currently increased in parallel with the wide requirement. This happen because many application of this membrane technology. One of the applications from membrane technology is treatment of waste water as this experiment withheld. The study of mercury separation in deionized (DI) water using Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane to make sure whether UF membrane can separate mercury in the solution or not. This study using (UF) without the basis of PVDF. Besides, this study was held for pressure from 1.5-10.5 bar. If the optimum pressure of 5 bar, permeate flux value is as low as1.82Lm2/min and retentate flux value is as high as 18.02Lm2/min achieved. Concentration value at retentate is high showing that the presences of mercury inhibit in the sample compare to original (DI) water. Concentration value achieved at retentate is about 2.0μg/L and permeate value is 1.0μg/L. After running separation process, observed that the product flow will be constant starting at the first 20 minutes to 40 minutes. This happen because pores on the Ultrafiltration membrane surface clogged with mercury. In order to clean pores, 5 concentration parameter NaOH for 0.1M, 0.2M, 0.3M, 0.4M, 0.5M recommended for cleaning process. From overall results, 0.5M NaOH is suitable for cleaning process of (UF) membrane according to graph plotted as same as standard graph that we get from first experiment.
