This water could be a possible source of new fresh water to meet the growing demands of the state after treatment and purification. This thesis describes a research project that evaluated the treatment of brine generated in oil fields (produced water) with ultrafiltration membranes. The characteristics of various ultrafiltration membranes for oil and suspended solids removal from produced water were studied to test whether they could be used in a pretreatment method. The research measured the effect of pressure and flow rate on performance of three commercially available membranes for treatment of oily produced water. Oil and suspended solids removal were measured by using turbidity and oil in water measurements taken periodically. The study also analyzed the flux through the membrane and any effect it had on membrane performance. The research showed that an ultrafiltration membrane provided turbidity removal of over 99% and oil removal of 78% for the produced water samples. The results indicated that the ultrafiltration membranes would be useful as one of the first steps in purifying the water. Membrane cleaning of produced water-fouled membranes by micellar solutions was investigated. A neutral pH and ambient temperature micelle solution for effective cleaning of oily water-fouled membranes was developed and studied. The performance of cleaning solutions on ultrafiltration membranes was investigated on laboratory size membrane testing equipment. Different micro emulsion solutions were studied to evaluate the effect of solution properties on cleaning performance. Three types of multiple membranes were studied, each having the same polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) material but with different nominal separation or flux characteristics. The data showed that the use of a micelle solution to clean the produced water-fouled membranes was a feasible and effective method. The study showed with further adjustment of the micelle solution the cleaning effectiveness could be optimized to provide double the effectiveness of current industry methods for membranes fouled by produced water.

Book excerpt: The use of Membrane technology is extensively increasing in water and wastewater treatment, food processing, chemical, biotechnological, and pharmaceutical industries because of their versatility, effectiveness, high removal capacity and ability to meet multiple treatment objectives. A common problem with using membranes is fouling, which results in increasing operating costs due to higher operating pressure losses, membrane downtime needed for cleaning, with associated production loss and manpower costs. In the literature, four different mechanisms for membrane fouling have been studied, which are complete pore blocking, internal pore blinding, partial pore bridging and cake filtration. Mathematical models have been developed for each of these fouling mechanisms. The objective of this thesis was to investigate the membrane fouling mechanisms for one porous and one dense membrane, during ultrafiltration of an emulsified industrial oily wastewater. An experimental system was designed, assembled and operated at the Ford Transmission Plant in Sharonville, Ohio, wherein ultrasonic baths were used for cleaning transmission parts before assembly. The oil wastewater, containing emulsified oils and cleaning chemicals was collected in a batch vessel and then pumped through a porous polyethersulfone, monolithic membrane, and through a dense cuproammonium cellulose membrane unit. For the porous membrane, use of a Dupont's flurosurfactant (FS 63) and backwashing with permeate and for the dense membrane the use of both the flurorosurfactant and sparged air were investigated to reduce membrane fouling. For the porous membrane study, it was observed that the permeate flux was strongly dependent on the transmembrane pressure difference, and addition of the flurosurfactant significantly improved the performance of the membrane. The backwashing cleaning efficiency was found to depend on the duration of backwashing and its frequency. An integrated fouling model was developed by combining the individual models for each fouling mechanism, originally published by Hermia [18], and analysis of the experimental data for ultrafiltration of oily emulsion revealed that the primary mechanism for fouling of the porous membrane was cake filtration. With increasing transmembrane pressure, the role of other mechanisms, such as pore blocking and partial pore bridging, increases, although the effect of cake filtration dominates. Hence, for oily emulsions, methods to disrupt the formation of a cake layer at the membrane surface would have the most impact in increasing the water permeation rates through the membrane. For the dense membrane study, permeate flux also increased with increasing transmembrane pressure difference, as in the porous membrane, and the major mechanisms for fouling were found to be concentration polarization gel layer formation on the membrane surface. In this case, the use of both sparged air and fluorosurfactant, increased the water permeation rates, but the permeation rate improvement with sparged air alone was significantly higher than with fluorosurfactant only. A mathematical model was developed to derive the mass transfer coefficients under the various operation conditions. Future studies will concentrate on improving membrane performance by reducing the impact of the dominant fouling mechanisms, found in this study, for both porous and dense membranes.

In order to treat challenging water supplies, additional processes must be considered for pretreatment before MF/UF, both to maintain the productivity of the membrane process and to meet treatment objectives that are not met by the membranes alone To evaluate the impact of pretreatment and water quality on the membrane performance, this project was implemented with four major tasks: literature review, bench-, pilot-, and full-scale studies. The literature review covers conference proceedings and journal papers regarding the effects of pretreatment on membrane filtration. The primary focus of the bench-scale testing is to examine membrane fouling mechanisms by specific fractions of constituents in natural water. The effects of various pretreatment chemicals and pretreatment processes on each fraction were also assessed. Pilot testing is conducted on three different water sources using similar pretreatment conditions of the bench-scale study for providing the correlation among the different scales. The full-scale evaluation provides insight on operational and design issues that were impacted by membrane pretreatment The project findings provide guidance to water utilities for integrating MF/UF membrane process into existing or new water treatment plants. It is important to note, however, that results presented in this study may not apply to all cases and situations. Therefore, it is recommended that the overall conclusions be used to inform and guide utilities with the most cost-effective and suitable approach (i.e., bench-, or pilot-scale) to address specific concerns and optimize membrane performance.
