Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2015 in the subject Chemistry - Other, grade: A, , course: IB Chemistry HL, language: English, abstract: I researched and studied the effect of temperature and concentration of the detergent, Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, on the cleaning ability of various popular washing powders, in terms of surface tension. Furthermore, it was the minimum concentration of LAS that must be present and maximum value of the surface was determined. I researched and found that the cleaning ability is a function of the surface tension and that washing powders contain surfactants or detergents like Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (LAS) that lower the surface tension. Surface tension causes the surface portion of liquid to be attracted to another surface. Thus lowering the surface tension allows the water to spread further and can penetrate into the holes and pores of the surface giving a better cleaning performance. However, these detergents only work if they are at their Critical Micelle Concentration. Keeping the CMC of LAS in mind, I took different concentrations of it so as to find the maximum value of surface tension that must be passed for effective cleaning.

Book excerpt: The definitive, science-backed guide to cleaning everything in your home in a safe, sustainable, evidence-based way “A great reference for anyone stumped by reluctant-to-leave dirt—and far cheaper than hiring a professional.”—Booklist Countless cleaning hacks for every kind of household dirt may vie for our attention, but how do we know which ones really work and which ones will only leave you with a sticky mess that doesn’t actually do the job? Scientific evidence comes to the rescue, as chemistry professor Dario Bressanini teaches you everything worth knowing about cleaning agents and processes (and dispels plenty of myths, too). He answers all of our most pressing housekeeping questions: Is it more efficient to wash dishes in the sink or in the dishwasher? Does bleach remove dirt? Which cleaning supplies should I buy, and which can I make at home? Can vinegar and baking soda actually unclog your drain? How can I most effectively tackle different types of stains? What can get rid of that stuff on my showerhead? Bressanini covers subjects like these by digging into chemistry basics such as solubility, pH, and concentration, bringing them out of the classroom and into the real-world chores that we deal with every day. Laundry, dishes, sinks, bathtubs, counters, floors, and more—no matter what you’re cleaning, this book explains how to choose the right tools for the task, save yourself unnecessary effort, and stay eco-friendly by avoiding waste. The Science of Cleaning reminds us that science can be both useful and exciting. With Bressanini’s help, you can keep your home, your belongings, and yourself clean—with the confidence that only centuries of advancements in chemistry can provide.

This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soaps are cleaning agents that are usually made by reacting alkali (e.g., sodium hydroxide) with naturally occurring fat or fatty acids. A soap is a salt of a compound known as a fatty acid. A soap molecule consists of a long hydrocarbon chain (composed of carbons and hydrogens) with a carboxylic acid group on one end which is ionic bonded to a metalion, usually a sodium or potassium. The hydrocarbon end is nonpolar and is soluble in nonpolar substances (such as fats and oils), and the ionic end (the salt of a carboxylic acid) is soluble in water. Soap is made by combining tallow (or other hard animal fat) or vegetable or fish oil with an alkaline solution. The two most important alkalis in use are caustic soda and caustic potash. A detergent is an effective cleaning product because it contains one or more surfactants. Because of their chemical makeup, the surfactants used in detergents can be engineered to perform well under a variety of conditions. Such surfactants are less sensitive than soap to the hardness minerals in water and most will not form a film. Disinfectants are chemical agents applied to non-living objects in order to destroy bacteria, viruses, fungi, mold or mildews living on the objects. Disinfectants are chemical substances used to destroy viruses and microbes (germs), such as bacteria and fungi, as opposed to an antiseptic which can prevent the growth and reproduction of various microorganisms, but does not destroy them. The ideal disinfectant would offer complete sterilization, without harming other forms of life, be inexpensive, and non-corrosive. The global soap and detergent market is expected to reach USD 207.56 billion by 2025. The industrial soaps & detergents are extensively used by the commercial laundries, hotels, restaurants, and healthcare providers. Increasing demand from healthcare and food industries will continue to drive the market. Aerosol and liquid products are the common disinfectants used in hospitals, although growing number of healthcare facilities are implementing ultraviolet disinfection systems as further measure. Increasing demand for disinfectants from water treatment and healthcare industries is fuelling growth of the global disinfectants market. The major contents of the book are Liquid Soaps and Hand Wash, Liquid Soap and Detergents, Washing Soap: Laundry Soap Formulation, Antiseptic and Germicidal Liquid Soap, Manufacturing Process And Formulations Of Various Soaps, Handmade Soap, Detergent Soap, Liquid Detergent, Detergent Powder, Application and Formulae Of Detergents, Detergent Bar, Detergents Of Various Types, Formulating Liquid Detergents, Phenyl, Floor Cleaner, Toilet Cleaner, Mosquito Coils, Naphthalene Balls, Air Freshener (Odonil Type), Liquid Hand Wash and Soaps, Hand Sanitizer, Aerosols–Water and Oil Based Insecticide (Flies, Mosquitoes Insect and Cockroach Killer Spray), Ecomark Criteria for Soaps & Detergents, Plant Layout, Process Flow Chart and Diagram, Raw Material Suppliers List and Photographs of Machinery with Supplier’s Contact Details. Book excerpt: Surfactants are ubiquitous and have applications in diverse areas, including food, cosmetics, detergents, lubricants, enhanced oil recovery (EOR), and targeted drug delivery systems. Their wide diversity of applications owes to their unique structure, namely, a hydrophilic and a hydrophobic group present in the same molecule. Although most surfactants used industrially are synthetic, there is a growing need for natural surfactants, as the latter is obtainable from renewable sources and are less toxic and highly biodegradable in contrast to their synthetic counterparts. This book is a compilation of interesting articles by various experts that cover various applications of both synthetic and natural surfactants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In to days market, custom formulated surfactants are offered for a wide range of applications. The need for surfactants in detergents, cleaning agents, cosmetics & toiletries is second only to an expanding demand in industrial applications. But even within the non-industrial areas the demands have undergone significant changes in recent years. For example, washing and cleaning temperatures have substantially decreased with increased energy conservation attitudes, and more stringent regulatory requirements in the area of ecology and toxicology are leading to new product profiles. New manufacturing technologies and an increased utilization of natural raw materials also factor into this continuing evolution. These changes and trends have been described in numerous publications. However, a summary and survey of these developments is currently missing. The book presented here "Surfactants in Consumer Products" is intended to close this gap. The editor and authors dedicate this work to Dr. Dr. h.c. Konrad Henkel on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Dr. Henkel, himself a scientist and industrialist, contributed signifi cantly to developments in the surfactant field. In the nineteen-fifties, he initiated the change from soap based detergents to synthetic detergents within Henkel. At the same time, dishwashing detergents utilizing various synthetic surfactants were also developed, and became the basis for modem manual and mechanical dishwashing.
