Si la interpretación bíblica –de Filón, pasando por Agustín, a Lutero– fue el modelo, la hermenéutica de la experiencia –Dilthey–y la pragmática ontológica de la comprensión –Heidegger– pusieron las bases a partir de las cuales la hermenéutica filosófica se constituye como talen la obra de Gadamer, quien plantea la hermenéutica como una filosofía universal de la interpretación. La hermenéutica es el arte de la comprensión. Quien quiera comprender en qué consiste la comprensión deberá atender a la diversidad de los fenómenos a través de lo que algo viene a la comprensión y partir del hecho de que ésta no es algo exclusivamente restringido al proceso de interpretación por el cual profundizamos en el sentido de un texto. Sin embargo, el camino no termina aquí. Hay que preguntarse por las numerosas tendencias actuales de la hermenéutica y las interdisciplinarias perspectivas surgidas desde y tras Gadamer. De ahí que el presente volumen intente aclarar en qué consiste la hermenéutica filosófica desde diez de las palabras clave para comprenderla.

En la comprensión, afirma Gadamer, "siempre tiene lugar algo así como una aplicación del texto que se quiere comprender a la situación actual del interprete",1 lo cual no se traduce en pérdida de objetividad o relativismo desbocado, sino en la oportunidad de temporalizar la comprensión y permitir la movilización de perspectivas, sensibilidades y necesidades diversas en un diálogo permanente entre pasado, presente y futuro. Frente al sueño de neutralidad y pureza metodológica de las ciencias sociales —preocupadas por suprimir cualquier reducto de subjetividad interpretativa—, Gadamer defiende una concepción que sitúa la verdad y la objetividad en medio de la condición humana y no más allá de ella, reivindicando así el antiguo vínculo entre teoría y praxis que Emile Durkheim, padre fundador de las ciencias sociales modernas, había puesto en duda en su tesis doctoral de 1892, La contribución de Montesquieu a la constitución de la ciencia social.
