Book excerpt: In these notes the author presents a complete theory of classification of E0-semigroups by product systems of correspondences. As an application of his theory, he answers the fundamental question if a Markov semigroup admits a dilation by a cocycle perturbations of noise: It does if and only if it is spatial.

Book excerpt: The problem of classifying semigroups of endomorphisms of type [italic]I[subscript]infinity symbol factors to outer conjugacy is reduced to the problem of classifying certain simpler structures associated to them, called product systems. Product systems are intimately connected with continuous tensor products of Hilbert spaces. We develop the general theory of product systems and give a number of applications to semigroups of endomorphisms of von Neumann algebras; in particular, we introduce a numerical invariant for such semigroups which is analogous to the Fredholm index.

Book excerpt: In a series of papers Tsirelson constructed from measure types of random sets or (generalised) random processes a new range of examples for continuous tensor product systems of Hilbert spaces introduced by Arveson for classifying $E_0$-semigroups upto cocycle conjugacy. This paper starts from establishing the converse. So the author connects each continuous tensor product system of Hilbert spaces with measure types of distributions of random (closed) sets in $[0,1]$ or $\mathbb R_+$. These measure types are stationary and factorise over disjoint intervals. In a special case of this construction, the corresponding measure type is an invariant of the product system. This shows, completing in a more systematic way the Tsirelson examples, that the classification scheme for product systems into types $\mathrm{I}_n$, $\mathrm{II}_n$ and $\mathrm{III}$ is not complete. Moreover, based on a detailed study of this kind of measure types, the author constructs for each stationary factorising measure type a continuous tensor product system of Hilbert spaces such that this measure type arises as the before mentioned invariant.

Book excerpt: The authors study a class of periodic Schrodinger operators, which in distinguished cases can be proved to have linear band-crossings or ``Dirac points''. They then show that the introduction of an ``edge'', via adiabatic modulation of these periodic potentials by a domain wall, results in the bifurcation of spatially localized ``edge states''. These bound states are associated with the topologically protected zero-energy mode of an asymptotic one-dimensional Dirac operator. The authors' model captures many aspects of the phenomenon of topologically protected edge states for two-dimensional bulk structures such as the honeycomb structure of graphene. The states the authors construct can be realized as highly robust TM-electromagnetic modes for a class of photonic waveguides with a phase-defect.

Book excerpt: A longstanding problem in Gabor theory is to identify time-frequency shifting lattices aZ×bZ and ideal window functions χI on intervals I of length c such that {e−2πinbtχI(t−ma): (m,n)∈Z×Z} are Gabor frames for the space of all square-integrable functions on the real line. In this paper, the authors create a time-domain approach for Gabor frames, introduce novel techniques involving invariant sets of non-contractive and non-measure-preserving transformations on the line, and provide a complete answer to the above abc-problem for Gabor systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the conference on Advances in Quantum Dynamics. The purpose of the conference was to assess the current state of knowledge and to outline future research directions of quantum dynamical semigroups on von Neumann algebras. Since the appearance of the landmark papers by F. Murray and J. von Neumann, On the Rings of Operators, von Neumann algebras have been used as a mathematical model in the study of time evolution of quantum mechanical systems.Following the work of M. H. Stone, von Neumann, and others on the structure of one-parameter groups of unitary transformations, many researchers have made fundamental contributions to the understanding of time-reversible dynamical systems. This book deals with the mathematics of time-irreversiblesystems, also called dissipative systems. The time parameter is the half-line, and the transformations are now endomorphisms as opposed to automorphisms. For over a decade, W. B. Arveson and R. T. Powers have pioneered the effort to understand the structure of irreversible quantum dynamical systems on von Neumann algebras. Their papers in this volume serve as an excellent introduction to the theory. Also included are contributions in other areas which have had an impact on the theory, such asBrownian motion, dilation theory, quantum probability, and free probability. The volume is suitable for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in the dynamics of quantum systems and corresponding topics in the theory of operator algebras.

Book excerpt: Quantum stochastic calculus has become an indispensable tool in modern quantum physics, its effectiveness being illustrated by recent developments in quantum control which place the calculus at the heart of the theory. Quantum statistics is rapidly taking shape as an intrinsically quantum counterpart to classical statistics, motivated by advances in quantum engineering and the need for better statistical inference tools for quantum systems. This volume contains a selection of regular research articles and reviews by leading researchers in quantum control, quantum statistics, quantum probability and quantum information. The selection offers a unified view of recent trends in quantum stochastics, highlighting the common mathematical language of Hilbert space operators, and the deep connections between classical and quantum stochastic phenomena.

This book was released on 2017-02-20 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using Dwork's theory, the authors prove a broad generalization of his famous -adic formal congruences theorem. This enables them to prove certain -adic congruences for the generalized hypergeometric series with rational parameters; in particular, they hold for any prime number and not only for almost all primes. Furthermore, using Christol's functions, the authors provide an explicit formula for the “Eisenstein constant” of any hypergeometric series with rational parameters. As an application of these results, the authors obtain an arithmetic statement “on average” of a new type concerning the integrality of Taylor coefficients of the associated mirror maps. It contains all the similar univariate integrality results in the literature, with the exception of certain refinements that hold only in very particular cases.

Book excerpt: he authors introduce and study the notions of hyperbolically embedded and very rotating families of subgroups. The former notion can be thought of as a generalization of the peripheral structure of a relatively hyperbolic group, while the latter one provides a natural framework for developing a geometric version of small cancellation theory. Examples of such families naturally occur in groups acting on hyperbolic spaces including hyperbolic and relatively hyperbolic groups, mapping class groups, , and the Cremona group. Other examples can be found among groups acting geometrically on spaces, fundamental groups of graphs of groups, etc. The authors obtain a number of general results about rotating families and hyperbolically embedded subgroups; although their technique applies to a wide class of groups, it is capable of producing new results even for well-studied particular classes. For instance, the authors solve two open problems about mapping class groups, and obtain some results which are new even for relatively hyperbolic groups.

Book excerpt: Several stochastic processes related to transient Lévy processes with potential densities , that need not be symmetric nor bounded on the diagonal, are defined and studied. They are real valued processes on a space of measures endowed with a metric . Sufficient conditions are obtained for the continuity of these processes on . The processes include -fold self-intersection local times of transient Lévy processes and permanental chaoses, which are `loop soup -fold self-intersection local times' constructed from the loop soup of the Lévy process. Loop soups are also used to define permanental Wick powers, which generalizes standard Wick powers, a class of -th order Gaussian chaoses. Dynkin type isomorphism theorems are obtained that relate the various processes. Poisson chaos processes are defined and permanental Wick powers are shown to have a Poisson chaos decomposition. Additional properties of Poisson chaos processes are studied and a martingale extension is obtained for many of the processes described above.

Book excerpt: The authors establish square function estimates for integral operators on uniformly rectifiable sets by proving a local theorem and applying it to show that such estimates are stable under the so-called big pieces functor. More generally, they consider integral operators associated with Ahlfors-David regular sets of arbitrary codimension in ambient quasi-metric spaces. The local theorem is then used to establish an inductive scheme in which square function estimates on so-called big pieces of an Ahlfors-David regular set are proved to be sufficient for square function estimates to hold on the entire set. Extrapolation results for and Hardy space versions of these estimates are also established. Moreover, the authors prove square function estimates for integral operators associated with variable coefficient kernels, including the Schwartz kernels of pseudodifferential operators acting between vector bundles on subdomains with uniformly rectifiable boundaries on manifolds.

This book was released on 2017-01-18 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of weak and strong advection on the dynamics of reaction-diffusion models have long been studied. In contrast, the role of intermediate advection remains poorly understood. For example, concentration phenomena can occur when advection is strong, providing a mechanism for the coexistence of multiple populations, in contrast with the situation of weak advection where coexistence may not be possible. The transition of the dynamics from weak to strong advection is generally difficult to determine. In this work the authors consider a mathematical model of two competing populations in a spatially varying but temporally constant environment, where both species have the same population dynamics but different dispersal strategies: one species adopts random dispersal, while the dispersal strategy for the other species is a combination of random dispersal and advection upward along the resource gradient. For any given diffusion rates the authors consider the bifurcation diagram of positive steady states by using the advection rate as the bifurcation parameter. This approach enables the authors to capture the change of dynamics from weak advection to strong advection. The authors determine three different types of bifurcation diagrams, depending on the difference of diffusion rates. Some exact multiplicity results about bifurcation points are also presented. The authors' results can unify some previous work and, as a case study about the role of advection, also contribute to the understanding of intermediate (relative to diffusion) advection in reaction-diffusion models.
