Book excerpt: ONE OF THE most well-known passages in the Bible—and, perhaps, in all of literature—is the thirteenth chapter of St. Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, often called the “love chapter.” In it, Paul extols the qualities of love and ends his writing by stating, “And these three abide: faith, hope, and love.” These three virtues have guided me during my days on this earth: ? A faith that draws me daily to admit my inadequacies and to ask for the grace to live a life worthy of His calling ? A hope that continuously compels me to be a stronger person, a brighter light, a better writer ? A deep and abiding love for God, my family, my friends I have tried to express these virtues in the poems I share with you here. The majority of my poems do not rhyme. Instead, I like to build a rhythm in my writing by how I break each line in a verse so that your eye is constantly yearning for the next word. For something different, I have included two examples—escape and Lovers and Other Strangers—of concrete poetry, a form developed in the 1950s in which the physical shape of the words on the page adds as much meaning to the poem as the words themselves. And with a nod to my Bachelor’s degree in Russian, I also give you ? ?????????? ????????????, with its translation on the following page. I recently took one of those online quizzes about “what type of writer are you?” My results said that, “You write because you feel a deeper calling to the work, and because you want to explore the soul element of life. You’re not shy of adding a moral to the story and most want to reach readers who will understand your unique view on life. Writing is more than just putting words on paper for you—it is a written prayer.” And to that I can say only, “Amen.”

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sixteen Dead Men: And Other Poems of Easter Week This book is a sacred obligation to one who broke her heart over Ireland. Dora Sigerson in her last few weeks of life, knowing full well that she was dying, designed every detail of this little volume - the dedication to the tricolour, introduction, and the order in which the poems are printed. Any profit that may arise from the sale of the book will be devoted, as are all the copyrights of the author, to a monument which she herself sculptured with a view to its erection over the graves of the "Sixteen Dead Men" when circumstances place their ashes in Glansnevin. Book excerpt: Poems (1920) is a collection of poems and plays by W.B. Yeats. Containing many of the poet’s early important works, Poems illuminates Yeats’ influence on the Celtic Twilight, a late-nineteenth century movement to revive the myths and traditions of Ancient Ireland. The collection opens with Yeats’ verse drama The Countess Cathleen, which he dedicated to the actress and revolutionary Maud Gonne. Set during a period of famine in Ireland, The Countess Cathleen tells the story of a wealthy landowning Countess who sells her soul to the devil in order to save her starving tenants. The Land of Heart’s Desire, Yeats’ first professionally performed play, follows a young fairy child who disrupts the lives of two newlyweds and shakes a simple village to its core. The Rose contains some of the writer’s most beloved early poems, including “To the Rose Upon the Rood of Time”—a symbolist lyric alluding to the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn—and “Fergus and the Druid,” a dialogue in verse. In “Who Goes With Fergus,” a poem blending ancient legend with modern Irish nationalism, Yeats asks the youth of his country to “brood on hopes and fears no more,” to follow Fergus who “rules the shadows of the wood, / And the white breast of the dim sea / And all disheveled wandering stars.” Yeats’ writing, mysterious and rich with symbolism, demonstrates not just a mastery of the English language, but an abiding faith in the cause and principles of Irish independence. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of W.B. Yeats’s Poems is a classic of Irish literature reimagined for modern readers.

The an alogies in nature, read as we read them since Easter Day, are prophecies and parables of the great Easter fact. The poets of the older time used these analogies as meaning that, while springtime brought life to the withered owers, that they should rise again to the fragrance of a new life, the buried man St. Paul did not hesitate to say the planted man had no resurrection.
