On one side the Romantics wanted an opening up of Italian culture towards Europe, and on the other the Classicists favoured an inward-looking Italy. Giacomo Leopardi wrote a Discourse of an Italian on Romantic Poetry aiming to contribute to the debate from a new perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1966, Classicism and Romanticism is a collection of important articles originally published in the author's famous book, Florentine Painting and its Social Background. Dr. Antal, a Hungarian by birth, was a man of the wildest culture. He studied art history in the universities of Budapest, Berlin, Paris and Vienna; thereafter, he travelled extensively in Italy, where he devoted himself to pioneering research in the history of mannerist painting. His exceptional sensitivity to the visual arts is apparent in such brilliant stylistic analyses as the essays on Netherlandish mannerism and on Girolamo da Carpi. He is known especially, however, for his application to art history of the sociological method. By returning art to its place in the general history of ideas and relating it to its economic, social, and political environment, he sought to give to the history of art a wider significance ad deeper meaning. This book will be of interest to students of art, history, literature, art history and European studies.

Book excerpt: In his reflections on Christianity, Saint Thomas Aquinas forged a unique synthesis of ancient philosophy and medieval theology. Preoccupied with the relationship between faith and reason, he was influenced both by Aristotle's rational world view and by the powerful belief that wisdom and truth can ultimately only be reached through divine revelation. Thomas's writings, which contain highly influential statements of fundamental Christian doctrine, as well as observations on topics as diverse as political science, anti-Semitism and heresy, demonstrate the great range of his intellect and place him firmly among the greatest medieval philosophers.

Book excerpt: Romanticism is often regarded as a turning point in literary history, the time when writers such as Wordsworth and Coleridge renounced the common legacy of poets and sought to create a new literature. Yet despite their emphasis on originality, genius, and spontaneity, the first-generation Romantics manifest a highly intertextual style that, while repressing certain classical and neoclassical literary conventions, reveals a deep dependence on those same rhetorical practices. Repression results in the symptoms of originality but it inevitably leads to the return of tradition in a different form.

Book excerpt: A radical, lively departure from received notions about art of the Romantic period For many, the term "neoclassicism" has come to imply discipline, order, restraint, and a certain myopia. Leaving the term behind, this book radically challenges enduring assumptions about the art produced from the late 18th century to the early Victorian period, casting new light on appropriations of the classical body by British artists. It is the first to foreground the intersections of gender, race, and class in discussions of British visual classicism, laying bare artists' alternately politicizing and emphatically sensual engagements with Greco-Roman art. Rather than rely exclusively on subsequent scholarship, the book takes up the poet John Keats (1795-1821) as a theoretical framework. Eschewing the "Golden Age" narrative, which sees J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851) as the pinnacle of the period's artistic achievement, the book examines overlooked artists, such as Henry Howard (1769-1847) and John Graham Lough (1798-1876). The result is a fresh account of underappreciated works of British painting and sculpture. Distributed for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art

Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2022 in the subject Literature - Comparative Literature, grade: 1, Bahir Dar University (Faculity of Humanities), course: English Literature, language: English, abstract: Literature is a unique subject that is intertwined with a variety of fields. This paper's major goal was to provide a comprehensive overview of the literary movements of Classicism and Romanticism. The 18th century's Classicism (Literary Movement) is a movement of artists and authors inspired by the styles and concepts of ancient Greece and Rome. It was a political and philosophical shift away from overt religion and toward science and reason. Reason, Balance, Order, Clarity, Ideal beauty, Common man, Orderly form/structure, Tradition, Nature as a machine, Society, Logic, and Unity were the key points of emphasis. Writers and philosophers stressed the value of logical thought in human affairs, and classicism includes the movement known as the 'Age of Reason' or the 'Enlightenment.' Romanticism, on the other hand, is an attitude or philosophical orientation that marked numerous works of Western civilization's literature, painting, music, architecture, criticism, and historiography from the late 18th to the mid-19th centuries. Order, serenity, harmony, balance, idealization, and rationalism are among the precepts that Romanticism rejects. Between the late eighteenth and the mid-nineteenth century, a cultural and intellectual movement known as Romanticism flourished in Europe. The Romantic Movement emphasized the significance of emotional sensitivity and individual subjectivity and was seen as a break from the Enlightenment's guiding principles, which placed reason as the foundation of all knowledge. The most essential creative faculty for the Romantics was imagination, rather than reason.
