Book Synopsis The Spread of Almost Simple Classical Groups by : Scott Harper
Download or read book The Spread of Almost Simple Classical Groups written by Scott Harper and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph studies generating sets of almost simple classical groups, by bounding the spread of these groups. Guralnick and Kantor resolved a 1962 question of Steinberg by proving that in a finite simple group, every nontrivial element belongs to a generating pair. Groups with this property are said to be 3/2-generated. Breuer, Guralnick and Kantor conjectured that a finite group is 3/2-generated if and only if every proper quotient is cyclic. We prove a strong version of this conjecture for almost simple classical groups, by bounding the spread of these groups. This involves analysing the automorphisms, fixed point ratios and subgroup structure of almost simple classical groups, so the first half of this monograph is dedicated to these general topics. In particular, we give a general exposition of Shintani descent. This monograph will interest researchers in group generation, but the opening chapters also serve as a general introduction to the almost simple classical groups.
Book Synopsis Cherlin’s Conjecture for Finite Primitive Binary Permutation Groups by : Nick Gill
Download or read book Cherlin’s Conjecture for Finite Primitive Binary Permutation Groups written by Nick Gill and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-17 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a proof of Cherlin’s conjecture for finite binary primitive permutation groups. Motivated by the part of model theory concerned with Lachlan’s theory of finite homogeneous relational structures, this conjecture proposes a classification of those finite primitive permutation groups that have relational complexity equal to 2. The first part gives a full introduction to Cherlin’s conjecture, including all the key ideas that have been used in the literature to prove some of its special cases. The second part completes the proof by dealing with primitive permutation groups that are almost simple with socle a group of Lie type. A great deal of material concerning properties of primitive permutation groups and almost simple groups is included, and new ideas are introduced. Addressing a hot topic which cuts across the disciplines of group theory, model theory and logic, this book will be of interest to a wide range of readers. It will be particularly useful for graduate students and researchers who need to work with simple groups of Lie type.

Book Synopsis Analytic Combinatorics by : Philippe Flajolet
Download or read book Analytic Combinatorics written by Philippe Flajolet and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-15 with total page 825 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytic combinatorics aims to enable precise quantitative predictions of the properties of large combinatorial structures. The theory has emerged over recent decades as essential both for the analysis of algorithms and for the study of scientific models in many disciplines, including probability theory, statistical physics, computational biology, and information theory. With a careful combination of symbolic enumeration methods and complex analysis, drawing heavily on generating functions, results of sweeping generality emerge that can be applied in particular to fundamental structures such as permutations, sequences, strings, walks, paths, trees, graphs and maps. This account is the definitive treatment of the topic. The authors give full coverage of the underlying mathematics and a thorough treatment of both classical and modern applications of the theory. The text is complemented with exercises, examples, appendices and notes to aid understanding. The book can be used for an advanced undergraduate or a graduate course, or for self-study.
Book Synopsis Combinatorics: The Art of Counting by : Bruce E. Sagan
Download or read book Combinatorics: The Art of Counting written by Bruce E. Sagan and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2020-10-16 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a gentle introduction to the enumerative part of combinatorics suitable for study at the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate level. In addition to covering all the standard techniques for counting combinatorial objects, the text contains material from the research literature which has never before appeared in print, such as the use of quotient posets to study the Möbius function and characteristic polynomial of a partially ordered set, or the connection between quasisymmetric functions and pattern avoidance. The book assumes minimal background, and a first course in abstract algebra should suffice. The exposition is very reader friendly: keeping a moderate pace, using lots of examples, emphasizing recurring themes, and frankly expressing the delight the author takes in mathematics in general and combinatorics in particular.
Book Synopsis Expansion in Finite Simple Groups of Lie Type by : Terence Tao
Download or read book Expansion in Finite Simple Groups of Lie Type written by Terence Tao and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2015-04-16 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expander graphs are an important tool in theoretical computer science, geometric group theory, probability, and number theory. Furthermore, the techniques used to rigorously establish the expansion property of a graph draw from such diverse areas of mathematics as representation theory, algebraic geometry, and arithmetic combinatorics. This text focuses on the latter topic in the important case of Cayley graphs on finite groups of Lie type, developing tools such as Kazhdan's property (T), quasirandomness, product estimates, escape from subvarieties, and the Balog-Szemerédi-Gowers lemma. Applications to the affine sieve of Bourgain, Gamburd, and Sarnak are also given. The material is largely self-contained, with additional sections on the general theory of expanders, spectral theory, Lie theory, and the Lang-Weil bound, as well as numerous exercises and other optional material.

Book Synopsis An Invitation to Abstract Mathematics by : Béla Bajnok
Download or read book An Invitation to Abstract Mathematics written by Béla Bajnok and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This undergraduate textbook promotes an active transition to higher mathematics. Problem solving is the heart and soul of this book: each problem is carefully chosen to demonstrate, elucidate, or extend a concept. More than 300 exercises engage the reader in extensive arguments and creative approaches, while exploring connections between fundamental mathematical topics. Divided into four parts, this book begins with a playful exploration of the building blocks of mathematics, such as definitions, axioms, and proofs. A study of the fundamental concepts of logic, sets, and functions follows, before focus turns to methods of proof. Having covered the core of a transition course, the author goes on to present a selection of advanced topics that offer opportunities for extension or further study. Throughout, appendices touch on historical perspectives, current trends, and open questions, showing mathematics as a vibrant and dynamic human enterprise. This second edition has been reorganized to better reflect the layout and curriculum of standard transition courses. It also features recent developments and improved appendices. An Invitation to Abstract Mathematics is ideal for those seeking a challenging and engaging transition to advanced mathematics, and will appeal to both undergraduates majoring in mathematics, as well as non-math majors interested in exploring higher-level concepts. From reviews of the first edition: Bajnok’s new book truly invites students to enjoy the beauty, power, and challenge of abstract mathematics. ... The book can be used as a text for traditional transition or structure courses ... but since Bajnok invites all students, not just mathematics majors, to enjoy the subject, he assumes very little background knowledge. Jill Dietz, MAA Reviews The style of writing is careful, but joyously enthusiastic.... The author’s clear attitude is that mathematics consists of problem solving, and that writing a proof falls into this category. Students of mathematics are, therefore, engaged in problem solving, and should be given problems to solve, rather than problems to imitate. The author attributes this approach to his Hungarian background ... and encourages students to embrace the challenge in the same way an athlete engages in vigorous practice. John Perry, zbMATH
Book Synopsis Linear Algebraic Groups and Finite Groups of Lie Type by : Gunter Malle
Download or read book Linear Algebraic Groups and Finite Groups of Lie Type written by Gunter Malle and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-08 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originating from a summer school taught by the authors, this concise treatment includes many of the main results in the area. An introductory chapter describes the fundamental results on linear algebraic groups, culminating in the classification of semisimple groups. The second chapter introduces more specialized topics in the subgroup structure of semisimple groups and describes the classification of the maximal subgroups of the simple algebraic groups. The authors then systematically develop the subgroup structure of finite groups of Lie type as a consequence of the structural results on algebraic groups. This approach will help students to understand the relationship between these two classes of groups. The book covers many topics that are central to the subject, but missing from existing textbooks. The authors provide numerous instructive exercises and examples for those who are learning the subject as well as more advanced topics for research students working in related areas.

Book Synopsis The Subgroup Structure of the Finite Classical Groups by : Peter B. Kleidman
Download or read book The Subgroup Structure of the Finite Classical Groups written by Peter B. Kleidman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1990-04-26 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the classification of the finite simple groups complete, much work has gone into the study of maximal subgroups of almost simple groups. In this volume the authors investigate the maximal subgroups of the finite classical groups and present research into these groups as well as proving many new results. In particular, the authors develop a unified treatment of the theory of the 'geometric subgroups' of the classical groups, introduced by Aschbacher, and they answer the questions of maximality and conjugacy and obtain the precise shapes of these groups. Both authors are experts in the field and the book will be of considerable value not only to group theorists, but also to combinatorialists and geometers interested in these techniques and results. Graduate students will find it a very readable introduction to the topic and it will bring them to the very forefront of research in group theory.

Book Synopsis Finite Simple Groups: Thirty Years of the Atlas and Beyond by : Manjul Bhargava
Download or read book Finite Simple Groups: Thirty Years of the Atlas and Beyond written by Manjul Bhargava and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classification of Finite Simple Groups, one of the most monumental accomplishments of modern mathematics, was announced in 1983 with the proof completed in 2004. Since then, it has opened up a new and powerful strategy to approach and resolve many previously inaccessible problems in group theory, number theory, combinatorics, coding theory, algebraic geometry, and other areas of mathematics. This strategy crucially utilizes various information about finite simple groups, part of which is catalogued in the Atlas of Finite Groups (John H. Conway et al.), and in An Atlas of Brauer Characters (Christoph Jansen et al.). It is impossible to overestimate the roles of the Atlases and the related computer algebra systems in the everyday life of researchers in many areas of contemporary mathematics. The main objective of the conference was to discuss numerous applications of the Atlases and to explore recent developments and future directions of research, with focus on the interaction between computation and theory and applications to number theory and algebraic geometry. The papers in this volume are based on talks given at the conference. They present a comprehensive survey on current research in all of these fields.
Book Synopsis The Classification of the Finite Simple Groups, Number 3 by : Daniel Gorenstein
Download or read book The Classification of the Finite Simple Groups, Number 3 written by Daniel Gorenstein and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1994 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines the internal structure of the finite simple groups of Lie type, the finite alternating groups, and 26 sporadic finite simple groups, as well as their analogues. Emphasis is on the structure of local subgroups and their relationships with one another, rather than development of an abstract theory of simple groups. A foundation is laid for the development of specific properties of K-groups to be used in the inductive proof of the classification theorem. Highlights include statements and proofs of the Breol-Tits and Curtis-Tits theorems, and material on centralizers of semisimple involutions in groups of Lie type.
