Book excerpt: Excerpt from Classical Associations of Places in Italy The purpose of this book is to bring together passages from Latin and Greek authors for the lovers of Italy and the classics, whether those who stand in the actual presence of landscape and monument, or those who contemplate them in memory or imagination. Such persons will need neither introduction to the pages that follow nor instruction in the manner of their use. It is not the author's intention either to be exhaustive in the matter of citations or to make a critical edition of the text. Economy, if not regard for the reader, forbids the admission of passages not of principal importance; and to reduce to absolute uniformity a text of such extent and such variety of authorship and assembled perforce from so many different editions, has seemed, in view of the purpose of the volume, an unnecessary and an uncalled-for labor. For occasional instances where the text is not followed accurately by the translation, the author asks the reader's indulgence; she has not felt at liberty to make changes in versions not her own except as the interests of English idiom made them essential. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Classical Tour Through Italy, An. 1802, Vol. 1 The Preliminary Discourse is intended chiefly for the information of young and in ex penen ced travellers, and points out the qualities and accomplishments requisite to' enable them to derive from an Italian Tour, its full advantages. The Reader then comes to the Tour itself. The epithet Classical sufficiently points out its peculiar character, which is to trace the resemblance between Modern and Ari-l. Dent Italy, and to take for guides and companions in. The beginning of the nine teenth centur y, the writers that preceded or adorned the first. Conformably to aim character, the Author may be allowed to dwell with complacency on the incidents of ancient history, to admit every poetical recollection; and to claim indulgence, if in describing Objects so often alluded to by the Latin writers, he should frequently borrow their expressions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Classical Tour Through Italy, Vol. 2 of 3 To the Vatican we shall now turn and close our account of Roman churches, by a faint and imperfect description of some of the glories of this unrivalled fabric, the boast of modem skill and trophy of the united arts of painting, sculpture, and architecture. The Basilica of St. Peter was the first and noblest religious edifice erected by Constantine. It stood on part of the circus of Nero, and was supposed to occupy a spot consecrated by the blood of numberless martyrs exposed or slaughtered in that place of public amusement by order of the tyrant. Book Synopsis Asian Classics on the Victorian Bookshelf by : Alexander Bubb
Download or read book Asian Classics on the Victorian Bookshelf written by Alexander Bubb and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-14 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interest among Victorian readers in classical literature from Asia has been greatly underestimated. The popularity of the Arabian Nights and The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is well documented. Yet this was also an era in which freethinkers consulted the Quran, in which schoolchildren were given abridgements of the Ramayana to read, in which names like 'Kalidasa' and 'Firdusi' were carved on the façades of public libraries, and in which women's book clubs discussed Japanese poetry. But for the most part, such readers were not consulting the specialist publications of scholarly orientalists. What then were the translations that catalysed these intercultural encounters? Based on a unique methodology marrying translation theory with empirical techniques developed by historians of reading, this book shines light for the first time on the numerous amateur translators or 'popularizers', who were responsible for making these texts accessible and disseminating them to the Victorian general readership. Asian Classics on the Victorian Bookshelf explains the process whereby popular translations were written, published, distributed to bookshops and libraries, and ultimately consumed by readers. It uses the working papers and correspondence of popularizers to demonstrate their techniques and motivations, while the responses of contemporary readers are traced through the pencil marginalia they left behind in dozens of original copies. In spite of their typically limited knowledge of source-languages, Asian Classics argues that popularizers produced versions more respectful of the complexity, cultural difference, and fundamental untranslatability of Asian texts than the professional orientalists whose work they were often adapting. The responses of their readers, likewise, frequently deviated from interpretive norms, and it is proposed that this combination of eccentric translators and unorthodox readers triggered 'flights of translation', whereby historical individuals can be seen to escape the hegemony of orientalist forms of knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Something of Italy The present volume is only what it purports to be, Something, not much, about italy - just those glances at the country, its people, and usages which were casually obtained during a three months' excursion in the spring and summer of 1862, along with such observations as are suggested by the hopeful progress of those portions of the Italian peninsula lately nationalised, as well as by the dismal backwardness of those other parts - Rome and Venetia - still under an antiquated and relentless thraldom. The illustrations are chie y from photographs, in the prepara tion of which the Italians sustain their reputation for artistic excellence. It has to be added, that the substance of the volume appeared as detached papers in the Journal with which the. Download or read book Living Classics written by S. J. Harrison and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-08-20 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays explores the extensive use of Latin and Greek literary texts in a range of recent poetry written in English. It contains both contributions from poets, who include Tony Harrison, Seamus Heaney, and Michael Longley, talking about their uses of classical literature in their own work in lyric poetry and in theatre poetry, and essays from academic experts on the same topics. Living Classics asks why contemporary poets are returning to making versions of and allusions to Greek and Roman literature in their work, and interrogates the parallel interest of modern classical scholars in the contemporary reception of classical texts.
