Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical, Political and Statistical Account of Mauritius and Its Dependencies In presenting to the Public the first volume of a work, the execution of which, in conformity with the comprehensive plan developed in this volume, has been deemed by many impracticable, the Author cannot fail to be influenced by sentiments of a mingled character - by a feeling of diffidence when he reflects on his unfitness, at so early an age, for a task that may perchance be rightly deemed gigantic - by a partial satisfaction, accompanied by hope, when he considers that he may have to some extent succeeded in an object which others of far greater ability, but perhaps less patience, have successively abandoned - by a sentiment, he trusts, he may say akin to patriotism, in that he should be the instrument, however humble, of describing the components of an empire that, considered in any point of view, is as unrivalled for its grandeur and fame as for the spirit of wisdom and justice by which its affairs are administered. The result is a charming mix of cultural and religious traditions, against the backdrop of a tropical paradise. The dramatic landscapes of Mauritius feature high mountain peaks, white beaches and untouched rainforest, as well as rich fauna and flora. This is a welcoming country, where the people live in harmony with their natural surroundings. This selection of postcards from André de Kervern's collection is a timeless record of Mauritius. Each chapter focuses on a different region including the north, south, centre and the capital Port Louis, as well as on the island's people. Classic scenes of sugar cane plantations, railways, parades, horse races and verdant landscapes were all widely circulated fragments of cinéma-vérité. Complete with detailed captions and essays by Yvan Martial, these postcards offer glimpses of life in Mauritius from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epidemics of Mauritius: With a Descriptive and Historical Account of the Island One of our fellow-conntrymen, Doctor D. E. Anderson, a resident for many years past in London, has recently published a book on 'The Epidemics of Mauritius.' It includes more than what the title denotes, for it contains two preliminary chapters on the Geography and History of the Island, and is written in a popular style so that the common reader can understand it. Doctor Anderson is one of those Mauritians who far from hiding the place of their birth take every opportunity to let it be known that they were born in the Southern latitudes, in that little colony which has unfortunately lost so much of its pristine splendour. The Doctor's fidelity to his native Island is most touching; it is that of a good son who cherishes his mother through fortune and misfortune. That is a virtue not to be found in everybody, but he inherits it from his exemplary parents. His father, born in Glasgovr, founded in Mauritius a delightful home, where he and his wife (of French origin) brought up their family in a lovely spot in Moka, by the side of the Grand River Glen. Our author refers to that Christian home, Glenside, in simple and loving language which makes one all the more regret the fact that that "home" no longer exists, for the old parents are dead, and the children are married and are scattered over the four corners of the Universe, but all have done honour to their name by their merits and their virtues. 'In the nineties, Doctor Anderson, who many years before had been a Laureate of the Royal( college, returned to Mauritius for a couple of months, and devoted a large portion of his time in studying the endemic and epidemic diseases of the Island. He also took useful notes concerning everything which affected our interests, and he added to his own experience that of his fellow physicians. Extracts from the publications and conclusions of Sir Ronald Ross and Doctor Meldrum. on the Malarial Epidemic, of Doctor Bolton on the Sanitation of the Island, of the late Doctor Poupinel on Leprosy, and of many others on Cholera, Beri-beri, Plague, Diphtheria, and Mosquitoes, are copiously and precisely stated, and are illustrated by means of charts, statistical tables, and engravings. Our author renders full homage to the original researches of Doctors Rouget, Keisler, Clarenc, Lafont, and de Chazal.
