Book Synopsis American Powerboats: The Great Lakes' Golden Years 1882-1984 by : James P. Barry
Download or read book American Powerboats: The Great Lakes' Golden Years 1882-1984 written by James P. Barry and published by . This book was released on with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This look back at the great boatbuilders that sprung up on the shores of the Great Lakes stretches from the first use of internal combustion for marine applications in the late nineteenth century to the early-1960s, when wooden construction was increasingly replaced by fiber-glass and aluminum, and on to the early 1980s. More than covering lovely mahogany runabouts, this work also includes chapters on racers and cruisers/commuters. In addition to familiar names like Chris-Craft, Hacker, Century, and Lyman, there are also less frequently covered boats from names like Richards, Matthews, Burger, and Tiara. The final chapters explore the use of non-wood materials. Detroit was the epicenter of early-20th century boat-makers using engines from the nation's nascent automotive industry. Boat-makers, however, did not cluster as tightly around that city as did auto manufactures; they were found from the Thousand Islands of Lake Ontario to Chicago and Duluth. Despite this regionalism the Great Lakes builders, more than any others, influenced the entire world's power-boating community.

Download or read book Ultimate Boat Maintenance Projects written by Scott Smith and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boat owners, perhaps more so than other motoring enthusiasts, want to spend their time playing, not maintaining, their toys. Unfortunately, due to their higher exposure to damaging elements, their longer periods of non-use, and the remote locations to which they transport their users, it could be argued that boats also require more care than cars or motorcycles. This guide breaks down by system the routine maintenance procedures every boat owner should know, presenting in more digestible chunks the upkeep of any modern boat, whether it's 16 or 60 feet, inboard or outboard, open-hulled or cabin-equipped. Much of the information included is even applicable to sailboats, as well as runabouts and cabin cruisers.

Download or read book Making Waves written by Scott M Peters and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2015-01-22 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michigan will always be known as the automobile capital of the world, but the Great Lakes State boasts a similarly rich heritage in the development of boat building in America. By the late nineteenth century, Michigan had emerged as the industry’s hub, drawing together the most talented designers, builders, and engine makers to produce some of the fastest and most innovative boats ever created. Within decades, gifted Michigan entrepreneurs like Christopher Columbus Smith, John L. Hacker, and Gar Wood had established some of the nation’s top boat brands and brought the prospect of boat ownership within reach for American consumers from all ranges of income. More than just revolutionizing recreational boating, Michigan boat builders also left their mark on history—from developing the speedy runabouts favored by illicit rum-runners during the Prohibition era to creating the landing craft that carried Allied forces to shores in Europe and the Pacific in WWII. In Making Waves, Scott M. Peters explores this intriguing story of people, processes, and products—of an industry that evolved in Michigan but would change boating across the world.
