Book excerpt: Growing up in Havana, Cuba, author Waldo Lopez-Aqueress life has been one of challenge, heartbreak, and adversity. At four, he almost lost his own life shortly after his mother lost hers. He was then rejected by his paternal grandparents and siblings. But he found comfort and acceptance with his maternal brothers and sisters, and from their love he found courage, hope, and an intense motivation to learn. As his body grew, so did his confidence and determination to rise above the terrors of his childhood. His young dreams were nearly derailed, however, by the arrival of a totalitarian communist government. At twenty, his world like that of many other Cubans began to crumble around him, and his life and his ambitions were interrupted. Frustrated and disenchanted with the Cuban revolution, he immigrated to the United States at twenty-two to begin a new life. It was a daily struggle to adapt to a new culture, language, and way of life. Waldo did adapt, though; he went on to achieve personal, professional, and academic success in his adopted new home. Dr. Lopez-Aqueres exemplifies how the power of the human spirit can rise above adversity and how anyone with dedication, perseverance, and willpower can attain a meaningful and gratifying life. This is the story of his American dream come true, shared in intimate and inspirational detail.

Book excerpt: Thinking is a blueprint for life experiences. The quality of one's thinking to a large degree determines the quality of one's life. It is not possible to improve life without making improvements in thinking, and it is not possible to improve thinking without understanding the nature of the thinking process. Thinking 101 provides a unique insight into the nature of the invisible process of thinking by offering visible models that simplify and facilitate observation and understanding of the activity of the mind that influences all aspects of human existence. Thinking 101 addresses the"mechanics" of thinking process when individual is alone or involved in the interaction with others, and suggests simple steps that lead to dramatic improvement in its quality. This inevitably leads to positive changes in life. The brevity of this insightful and easy to read text assures its maximum impact. Years of research, study, experimentation, and testing of various conclusions have resulted with a condensed summary that is "Thinking 101." Reading it will save years of work an un-aided individual would put into research and study of (or into sorting through an immense amount of existing literature on) this complex subject matter. Thinking 101 is a gift that will keep on giving for years after it has been read.

Hope energizes people and communities, and also produces forbearance and patience. In this clear and accessible survey, which incorporates Asian perspectives, Roland Chia shows how Christian hope presses beyond the limits of both secular and religious world-views and confronts the reality of pain, suffering and death in the light of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is hope for God, and in God.

Book excerpt: In 1996, 60-year-old Bob Kelly temporarily lost the use of his legs. That disability was hard to bear for someone who had always been physically active. The following year, while looking for a way to use his upper body strength, he had an idea- to travel solo by kayak from Ottawa to the Atlantic. In 1998, after completing that journey, Kelly faced another loss with the death of Shirley, his beloved wife of 34 years. He decided to continue the kayak trip across Canada as a memorial to her. It was an odyssey that took him some 9,000 kilometres through the most challenging waterways of Canada. In Solo, Kelly tells how he overcame daunting obstacles, brutal weather, serious injuries and setbacks. The story ends on the historic Grand Portage, where Kelly faced the most gruelling test. "Long trips over water and portages are metaphors of life - the wind can be with you or a hurricane in your face. Bob's included physical and emotional obstacles greater than the whims of weather and geography. It spanned more than distance and time and was indeed the journey of an indomitable spirit." -Max Finklestein, author of Canoeing a Continent and Paddling the Boreal Forest.

Book excerpt: This commentary on a part of book 5 of Lucan's 'historical epic' poem De Bello Civili aims to provide the reader with as thorough an analysis as possible of literary and historical points of interest within the text and so to facilitate a fuller understanding and appreciation of one of the most important episodes in the poem, Julius Caesar's failed attempt to cross the Adriatic in the midst of a great storm. It examines how the episode contributes to the long tradition of epic storm narratives dating back to Homer and also how it contributes to the wider themes of the poem as a whole, in particular to Lucan's portrayal of Caesar. A line-by-line commentary is combined with longer notes summarizing issues of particular importance. Such issues include: the influence of Roman love-poetry in the depiction of the relationship between Caesar and his men, Lucan's use of Virgil's Nisus and Euryalus episode, and the tradition of theoxeny narratives lying behind the scene at the home of the fisherman Amyclas which allows us to view Caesar as 'playing the part' of a traditional god or hero. Throughout, Lucan's engagement with the works of Homer, Virgil (particularly the Aeneid but also the Georgics), Ovid and Seneca, and the ways in which the lack of a traditional divine machinery in his poem is compensated for are considered.

Puck appears and gives him a magic Santa hat that changes his viewpoint on everything, including the love of his wife. and then there's Franklin Doyle, who in a life crisis spies a magical website originating from London, England--and decides to make a visit. A mystical winter fog comes up, and Doyle is transported back in time to hang out with Ebenezer Scrooge and old Mr. Fezziwig. Each of the 10 stories in this collection is written with the joyous winter season in mind--a time of hope and peace. Smile, forget the stresses of life, and find your joy.
