Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clark, Skurcenski, and Vital family papers and photographs primarily consist of genealogical information concerning the Clark, Skurcenski, and Vital families. Family trees, family histories, correspondence, and photographs chronicle the history of these families in America beginning in the mid-1800s. Last will and testaments, family photographs, and official correspondence record the history of the Clark property in Bedford and Schellsburg, Pa. Although a number of these papers pertain to the history of these four families, a majority of the records in this collection regard the following individuals: Andras Andrew Gyuris Vital, Dorothy Clark Vital, Joseph Vital (brother of Andrew Vital), Jessie Virginia Clark Skurcenski, and Anton Skurcnski. While assorted diplomas and certificates record their formal activities and actions, VHS tapes, a diary (1941-1942), and correspondence document the social interactions and experiences of these family members. Official publications and correspondence from the Fine Arts Sterling Company and the H. I. Thompson Fiber Glass Company record the work of Dorothy Vital and Anton Skurcenski, respectively. Postcards in this collection contain correspondence between members of the Clark family in addition to recording the by-mail checker games played by Anton Skurcenski. Also included in this collection is a comic stamp collection dating from the 1930s that belonged to Anton Skurcenski. In addition, local newspaper clippings in this collection record the particulars of the 1961 plane crash that took the lives of Anton and Jessie Skurcenski. Oversized materials in this collection include two late 1800s portraits of Clark family members and the Andrew Vital baptismal certificate.

Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of CLARA’S HEART and CLOUDLAND comes a rich, literary mystery based and united by two real events that occurred at Middlebury College; the disappearance of a student during winter break; and the vandalism of the Robert Frost Homestead located on one of the outer campuses. Luc Flanders has just finished playing a game of pond hockey with his college roommates when he realizes he has lost something precious and goes back to the ice to find it. He never returns, and the police department in Middlebury, Vermont are divided in their assessment of what may have happened to him. Some feel that Flanders left on his own accord and is deliberately out of touch. Others, including detectives Nick Jenkins and Helen Kennedy, suspect that harm may have come to him. As the search for Luc Flanders widens and intensifies, suspicions about several different people, including his Middlebury College roommates and ex-girlfriend arise. Unfortunately, Sam Solomon an older man with whom Luc has been having a secret relationship, cannot prove his whereabouts during the hours when the younger man may have disappeared and Solomon, too, comes under suspicion. As Luke Flanders disappears, the Robert Frost house near the Middlebury campus is vandalized. And there seems to be a link between the two events that the police are determined to discover. Alternating points of view between Luc Flanders Sam Solomon, Luc’s mother and detective Nick Jenkins, BLACK DIAMOND FALL races to a disturbing and astonishing conclusion in a lush, literary mystery that could only come from the mind of acclaimed author Joseph Olshan.
Book Synopsis An Ethology of Religion and Art by : Bryan Rennie
Download or read book An Ethology of Religion and Art written by Bryan Rennie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from sources including the ethology of art and the cognitive science of religion this book proposes an improved understanding of both art and religion as behaviors developed in the process of human evolution. Looking at both art and religion as closely related, but not identical, behaviors a more coherent definition of religion can be formed that avoids pitfalls such as the Eurocentric characterization of religion as belief or the dismissal of the category as nothing more than false belief or the product of scholarly invention. The book integrates highly relevant insights from the ethology and anthropology of art, particularly the identification of the special by Ellen Dissanayake and art as agency by Alfred Gell, with insights from, among others, Ann Taves, who similarly identified specialness as characteristic of religion. It integrates these insights into a useful and accurate understanding and explanation of the relationship of art and religion and of religion as a human behavior. This in turn is used to suggest how art can contribute to the development and maintenance of religions. The innovative combination of art, science, and religion in this book makes it a vital resource for scholars of Religion and the Arts, Aesthetics, Religious Studies, Religion and Science and Religious Anthropology.

Book Synopsis Why Good People Do Bad Things by : James Hollis
Download or read book Why Good People Do Bad Things written by James Hollis and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2008-04-17 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Working with the Shadow is not working with evil, per se. It is working toward the possibility of greater wholeness. We will never experience healing until we can come to love our unlovable places, for they, too, ask love of us. How is it that good people do bad things? Why is our personal story and our societal history so bloody, so repetitive, so injurious to self and others? How do we make sense of the discrepancies between who we think we are—or who we show to the outside world—versus our everyday behaviors? Why are otherwise ordinary people driven to addictions and compulsions, whether alcohol, drugs, food, shopping, infidelity, or the Internet? Why are interpersonal relationships so often filled with strife? Exploring Jung’s concept of the Shadow—the unconscious parts of our self that contradict the image of the self we hope to project--Why Good People Do Bad Things guides you through all the ways in which many of our seemingly unexplainable behaviors are manifestations of the Shadow. In addition to its presence in our personal lives, Hollis looks at the larger picture of the Shadow at work in our culture—from organized religion to the suffering and injustice that abounds in our modern world. Accepting and examining the Shadow as part of one’s self, Hollis suggests, is the first step toward wholeness. Revealing a new way of understanding our darker selves, Hollis offers wisdom to help you to acquire a more conscious conduct of your life and bring a new level of awareness to your daily actions and choices.
