This ground-breaking set will enable readers to track the development of different cultures and regions over the 800 years that formed the Europe we have today. In addition to revealing the process of Europeanisation, within its shared intellectual and technical inheritance, the complete work provides an opportunity for demonstrating the differences that were inevitably present across the continent - from Iceland to Sicily and Portugal to Finland.

Dedicated to helping teachers inspire children’s love of place, nature and geographical adventures through facilitating children’s voice and developing their agency, this book explores the way playful opportunities can be created for children to learn how to think geographically, to solve real-life problems and to apply their learning in meaningful ways to the world around them. Based on the very latest research, Powerful Primary Geography helps children understand change, conflict and contemporary issues influencing their current and future lives and covers topics such as: • Weather and climate change • Sustainability • Engaging in their local and global community • Graphicacy, map work and visual literacy • Understanding geography through the arts. Including several case studies from primary schools in Ireland, this book will help aid teachers, student teachers and education enthusiasts in preparing children for dealing with the complex nature of our contemporary world through artistic and thoughtful geography. Facilitating children’s engagement as local, national and global citizens ensures geography can be taught in a powerful and meaningful manner.

Book excerpt: On the eve of the Second World War in Europe, the senior pupils in the National Schools of the West of Ireland were engaged in an important, if somewhat unusual, task. With the aid of a questionnaire supplied by the Irish Folklore Commission, and under the direction of their teachers, the children were collecting a wide and varied range of folklore and folk memories in their own neighbourhoods. The stories they gathered were many and varied, covering such topics as local beliefs and customs, traditional crafts, weather lore, the Famine, cures, songs and riddles. This is their story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A handbook to the events and locations of the Easter 1916 Rising. There are so many different versions of the story of Easter Week 1916. Lorcan Collins, an acknowledged expert on the subject and founder of the 1916 Rebellion Walking Tour, decided that it was time to put together a truthful and factually correct reference book in one handy volume. This '1916 bible' will be invaluable to anyone with an interest in recent Irish history who wants to separate the facts from the fiction. 1916: The Rising Handbook offers bite-sized details about the organisations involved in the Rising, the positions occupied during Easter week, the weapons the rebels and army used, the documents that were passed around, and the speeches that were given. It details the women who came out to fight and profiles the sixteen executed leaders, as well as looking at the rebellion outside of Dublin. It also utilises three different resources to give the most comprehensive list yet of all of those involved in the Rising. If a relative of yours fought during Easter 1916, you'll find their name in here.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'Pathway to Rebellion' Willie Henry traces the origins of the rebellion of 1916 in Co. Galway back over a century. He argues that the country's rebellious past encouraged the Galway Volunteers to take a stand during the Rising, when many other parts of the country failed to do so. While Galway's people did not make the same blood sacrifice as Dublin, they were not lacking in courage. Many of the men were without arms, while others only had pikes. Nevertheless, they were prepared to fight, although aware that their rebellious actions could mean death in battle or before a firing squad. Despite this they stood by their convictions and showed unquestionable commitment to the idea of a free Ireland. Following the Rising those who were captured were assaulted, subjected to verbal abuse by the public and their captors, and condemned to imprisonment. Some managed to evade capture, but were forced to go on the run. However, in the aftermath of the leaders' executions, public opinion changed dramatically and the traitors of yesterday were suddenly the heroes of today. The homecoming of those who were imprisoned was in total contrast to their departure. The entire story of Galway in 1916 is in this book, making it the definitive story of the rebellion in the west.
