Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social media was made to bring us together. But few things have driven us further apart. Sadly, many Christians are fueling online incivility. Others, exhausted by perpetual outrage and shame-filled from constant comparison, are leaving social media altogether. So, how should Christians behave in this digital age? Is there a better way? Daniel Darling believes we need an approach that applies biblical wisdom to our engagement with social media, an approach that neither retreats from modern technology nor ignores the harmful ways in which Christians often engage publicly. In short, he believes that we can and should use our online conversations for good.

Book excerpt: ECPA Christian Book Award Finalist Your Battle against Porn Isn't about Porn. It's about Hope. Pornography may seem inescapable, but God can free us from its destructive power. The gospel replaces the dehumanizing lies of pornography with this surprising truth: God created us as royalty. How then can we reclaim our God-given identity to take a stand against—and ultimately starve—the predatory porn industry? In The Death of Porn, Ray Ortlund writes six personal letters, as from a father to his son. Ideal for individuals and small groups, it will give hope to men who have been misled by porn into devaluing themselves and others. Through Scripture and personal stories, Ortlund assures readers that God loves them the most tenderly in their moments of deepest shame. The Death of Porn inspires men to come together in new ways to fight the injustice of porn and build a world of nobility for every man and woman—for the sake of future generations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stay Out Of Court And Stay In Ministry is written to help pastors prevent costly and career-ending lawsuits. It sets forth the most common legal claims asserted against religious organizations, and the defenses churches have successfully raised. ... We describe real-life legal claims against churches and analyze the outcomes, pro or con. We focus on the claims most frequently asserted against churches. Some of the trends defy conventional wisdom. For example, there are few suits for clergy malpractice, but many successful suits for slippery sidewalks. (from the Introduction) Your book should be required reading for every church pastor and primary lay leader, along with the property board chairperson ... excellent illustrations. Rev. Carl Buettemeier Newport Lutheran Church Newport, Minnesota Hagglund and Weimer ... give just enough information to understand and act responsibly. At the same time they do not bury the reader with legalese ... I especially appreciate the list of specific suggestions at the end of each chapter. Rev. Thomas D. Book excerpt: From the Introduction.THIS little volume deserves attention apart from its memorial character. Its level and range of thought, and its literary quality, are of a high order. Those especially who would cultivate the power of apt and effective public speaking will find in it much that is helpful. It is capable of a yet higher service, and for a wider circle. Whatever presents to the mind a true ideal, and quickens the energies necessary to its pursuit, has a universal value and is fitted to gain permanent influence. This ideal may specially concern a particular profession, yet its elevation and nobleness belong to all pure and lofty aims and bring them to view, and the strenuous purpose revealed in its pursuit in any direction of effort is identical or accordant with the resolution demanded for the cultivation of excellence in all other spheres in which it may be attained. It is in this way that the following pages, even those most exclusively occupied with the objects and methods of a single calling, will attract and influence, it is hoped, men of other vocations, and, indeed, so far as they become known, every generous and aspiring mind. This their wider adaptation and import will doubtless appear at once to anyone who will carefully peruse them. Yet a brief reference to some facts personal to the author of the lectures, sermons, and other productions here gathered together may not be superfluous.Professor Pease was endowed with unusual gifts for linguistic and literary pursuits. The Latin, Greek, Hebrew, French, German, Spanish, Italian languages were easily at his command, and he was unusually conversant with the best in their literatures. He had a strong natural predilection for aesthetic studies. The call came to him to take up the work of a preacher of the gospel and of a pastor. Fearing lest his love of "belles lettres," if he wrote his sermons, would hazard or mar their essential quality as addresses, converting them more or less into essays, he early determined to speak to men directly and under the influence of their immediate presence. Perfecting in every way his conception of the possible power and highest objects of such address, he gave himself with remarkable assiduity and strength of resolution to the realization of his ideal. He was first and most of all a diligent student of the Word of God, reading it in the original languages with critical care, catching with ear attent the very "accent of the Holy Ghost."...
