Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 320 pages with 80 total maps Locating original landowners in maps has never been an easy task-until now. This volume in the Family Maps series contains newly created maps of original landowners (patent maps) in what is now Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, gleaned from the indexes of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. But it offers much more than that. For each township in the county, there are two additional maps accompanying the patent map: a road map and a map showing waterways, railroads, and both modern and many historical city-centers and cemeteries. Included are indexes to help you locate what you are looking for, whether you know a person's name, a last name, a place-name, or a cemetery. The combination of maps and indexes are designed to aid researchers of American history or genealogy to explore frontier neighborhoods, examine family migrations, locate hard-to-find cemeteries and towns, as well as locate land based on legal descriptions found in old documents or deeds. The patent-maps are essentially plat maps but instead of depicting owners for a particular year, these maps show original landowners, no matter when the transfer from the federal government was completed. Dates of patents typically begin near the time of statehood and run into the early 1900s. What's Mapped in this book (that you'll not likely find elsewhere) . . . 5995 Parcels of Land (with original landowner names and patent-dates labeled in the relevant map) 67 Cemeteries plus . . . Roads, and existing Rivers, Creeks, Streams, Railroads, and Small-towns (including some historical), etc. What YEARS are these maps for? Here are the counts for parcels of land mapped, by the decade in which the corresponding land patents were issued: DecadeParcel-count 1820s6 1830s436 1840s421 1850s3189 1860s1218 1870s112 1880s167 1890s193 1900s92 1910s71 1920s63 1930s4 1940s3 1950s9 1960s4 1980s1 What Cities and Towns are in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana (and in this book)? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Aansel to Zwolle, with Mamou in between, researcher Clare D'Artois Leeper offers an alphabet of Louisiana place names, both past and present. Leeper includes 893 entries that reveal a distinct view of the state's history. Her unique blend of documented fact and traditional wisdom results in an entertaining guide to Louisiana's place name lore. Leeper considers the origins of each place as well as each name, drawing attention to the individuals who transformed Louisiana from an uninhabited wilderness into a populated state. Not surprising for a region that has existed under ten flags, Louisiana's place names reflect a mixture of several languages and point to other locales across the country and around the world. Even the state's name, Leeper points out, combines the French Louis and the Spanish iana, meaning "belonging to" Louis XIV. Name origins trace back to geography, flora, fauna, religion, weather, people, and occasionally, a flood, a favorite book, or a popular local dish. Leeper conducted numerous interviews, visited courthouses, museums, and libraries, and more recently made use of the Geographic Names Information System to create this fascinating collection of Louisiana history and folklore.

Book excerpt: "In this manuscript, Henry Alexander Wiencek takes a local approach to early twentieth-century domestic American energy production, what he calls "a gathering historical force" that was dramatically altering the economic, political, and social fabric of the United States. At this time, firms like Standard Oil were becoming some of the most influential actors on earth, wielding enormous power over the American economy and government--and leading some historians to tell the story of oil as a simple one of triumph and transformation. But, as Wiencek argues, a close look at the industry's venture into North Louisiana reveals a more varied and contested story of interaction, one in which global forces of industrial capitalism collided with--and often had to accommodate--local economic, social, political, and ecological dynamics. Despite its well-documented financial and technological prowess, the oil industry had to adapt its labor, tools, and investments to those circumstances--an international engine of economic power assuming a local form. Wiencek's chapters cover a lot of territory, from the history of oil boomtowns and "illicit" behavior to environmental impacts and political legacies. Not surprisingly, a key part of the story has to do with race. The new oil economy, he shows, collided with long-standing racial ideologies, which delineated sharp economic, social, and legal boundaries within the new industry. Prior to the boom, nearly three-quarters of the area's population was Black, with many rural tenant farmers working the same areas as their enslaved ancestors. But as oil created a lucrative new source of wages, racial violence became a way of ensuring the oil rigs--and the jobs they generated--would remain all white. On the other hand, oil did not naturally adhere to racial boundaries and at times was discovered under Black-owned lands, with complicated legal and social consequences that Wiencek explores via compelling case studies"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000. Encouraging, even requiring, higher density urban development is a major policy in the European Community and of Agenda 21, and a central principle of growth management programmes used by cities around the world. This work takes a critical look at a number of claims made by proponents of this initiative, seeking to answer whether indeed this strategy controls the spread of urban suburbs into open lands, is acceptable to residents, reduces trip lengths and encourages use of public transit, improves efficiency in providing urban infrastructure and services, and results in environmental improvements supporting higher quality of life in cities.

Book excerpt: This book is for those Louisiana slaves (and all the American slaves) whose labor was forced without regard to their humanity, even further, with unrestrained disrespect for their existence. This book is a tribute to the indigenous (originated in or native to the region) Black people of Northeast Louisiana, those folk who were reared in the rural areas, villages, and small towns; who worked on the farms and plantations; sharecropped; cleared all the land; tended all the livestock; planted and harvested all the crops; cooked for, babysat, and cleaned the homes of White folk; and endured the hardships of it all. This is a tribute to those laborers and professionals who strived for better lives for themselves and their families; the people who remained in Monroe, those who migrated to Monroe to make it a fine place to call home, and those who returned to the warmth of Monroe to live; and also, to those who left the area and moved on to other parts of the United States and world. I want to thank them all for trusting me with their stories.
