Book excerpt: In 1861, the people of Cornwall became embroiled in a war that tore the nation apart. Cornwall's men enlisted in the Union army, spending years away from their farms and businesses. The lucky ones returned home and recovered from their wounds; others returned home but were never able to recover from the trauma of war; still others died in battle or from disease. On the home front, the South Cornwall Ladies' Charitable Society raised funds and put together care packages for the troops, ministers rallied the spirits of their congregations, and dissenters and Southern sympathizers struggled to remain part of the community. Cornwall's best known soldier, Major General John Sedgwick, was the highest ranking Union casualty of the war. Other Cornwall soldiers included William Cogswell, Connecticut's first Native American to enlist in the war; and Charles Blinn, Connecticut's "boy Colonel." Their stories, and those of nearly two hundred Cornwall soldiers, appear here.

Royalists loyal to King Charles I clashed with the forces of Parliament in a series of hard-fought campaigns that crisscrossed the West Country landscape ... John Barratt's account of this bloody and disruptive phase in the West Country's history offers a graphic description of the engagements themselves and takes the reader on a tour of the battlefields"--Page 4 of cover.

Book excerpt: West Britons provides a fresh interpretation of the bloodiest, most devastating years in Cornwall's history and a wholly new perspective on the history of the far South West of Britain. The book explores the unprecedented series of rebellions which took place in Cornwall between 1497 and 1648, traces the connections which existed between those revolts and the contemporary Cornish perception of themselves as a separate 'people', and argues that Cornish history must be viewed within a 'British', rather than a purely English context. West Britons will be required reading for all those who are engaged in the contemporary political and historical debate over 'Britishness'. The book also includes transcriptions of a number of previously unpublished documents, useful to teachers and their students, and a list of some 300 Cornish Royalist officers, of special interest to Civil War enthusiasts and genealogists.

Excerpt: The Prayer Book Rebellion, Prayer Book Revolt, Prayer Book Rising, Western Rising or Western Rebellion was a popular revolt in Cornwall and Devon, in 1549. In 1549 the Book of Common Prayer, presenting the theology of the English Reformation, was introduced. The change was widely unpopular - particularly in areas of still firmly Catholic religious loyalty (even after the Act of Supremacy in 1534) such as Lancashire. Along with poor economic conditions, the attack on the Church led to an explosion of anger in Devon and Cornwall, initiating an uprising. In response, Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset, sent Lord John Russell with an army composed partly of German and Italian mercenaries to suppress the revolt. In June 2007 the Bishop of Truro, the Right Reverend Bill Ind, described the Church of England's role in the massacre of thousands of Catholic rebels during the suppression of the Prayer Book rebellion as an "enormous mistake." Cranmer's Prayer book of 1549.One probable cause of the Prayer Book Rebellion is the religious changes recently implemented by the government of the new king, Edward VI. In the late 1540s Lord Protector Somerset, on behalf of the young king, introduced a range of legislative measures as an extension of the Reformation in England and Wales, the primary aim being to change theology and practices of the Church of England along Protestant lines. In 1549 the Book of Common...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1861, when the Civil War began, Ulysses S. Grant was an ill-paid, somewhat-drunken, 38-year-old clerk in the township of Galena, Illinois. Four years later, when he received the surrender of the Confederate forces under Robert E. Lee at the historic courthouse of Appomattox, Grant had established himself as one of the great military commanders of all time. How such a transformation, as extraordinary as any in the annals of generalship, came about is examined in this volume. The author portrays Grant as one of the great military commanders and strategists of history. This book persuasively sets out the grounds upon which this conviction is based.
