In fact the nineteenth might be recorded as the greatest of centuries as far as the City of Boston is concerned, for it was during that period that practically all of the great physical changes occurred. The annexation of South Boston took place in 1804; Roxbury in 1868; Dorchester in 1870; Charlestown, Brighton, and West Roxbury in 1874; and Hyde Park in 1912, until Boston is now a city Of acres, or forty times its original size.
