Sample Book Insights: #1 To call Los Angeles an intellectual capital is to imply that it is fertile cultural soil that cannot produce any homegrown intellectuals. However, this is not entirely true. Los Angeles has become the world capital of an immense Culture Industry that has imported countless talented writers, filmmakers, artists, and visionaries. #2 Los Angeles has been a site of both massive subordination of intellectuals to the programs of capital, as well as their sharpest critiques of the culture of late capitalism. #3 The city of Los Angeles has been shaped by the migration of intellectuals, who have contributed to the creation and destruction of the city’s mythography. The so-called Arroyo Set created a comprehensive fiction of Southern California as the promised land of a millenarian Anglo-Saxon racial odyssey, while the post-war witch hunt decimated Hollywood progressives. #4 The noir vision of Los Angeles, and the exiles’ criticism of its counterfeit urbanity, inflicted a great deal of damage on the city’s accumulated ideological capital. As Los Angeles has rushed forward to Manhattanize its skylines, it has attempted to Manhattanize its cultural super-structure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is it that nearly 90 percent of the Texan population currently lives in metropolitan regions, but many Texans still embrace and promote a vision of their state’s nineteenth-century rural identity? This is one of the questions the editors and contributors to Lone Star Suburbs confront. One answer, they contend, may be the long shadow cast by a Texas myth that has served the dominant culture while marginalizing those on the fringes. Another may be the criticism suburbia has endured for undermining the very romantic individuality that the Texas myth celebrates. From the 1950s to the present, cultural critics have derided suburbs as landscapes of sameness and conformity. Only recently have historians begun to document the multidimensional industrial and ethnic aspects of suburban life as well as the development of multifamily housing, services, and leisure facilities. In Lone Star Suburbs, urban historian Paul J. P. Sandul, Texas historian M. Scott Sosebee, and ten contributors move the discussion of suburbia well beyond the stereotype of endless blocks of white middle-class neighborhoods and fill a gap in our knowledge of the Lone Star State. This collection supports the claim that Texas is not only primarily suburban but also the most representative example of this urban form in the United States. Essays consider transportation infrastructure, urban planning, and professional sports as they relate to the suburban ideal; the experiences of African Americans, Asian Americans, and Latinos in Texas metropolitan areas; and the environmental consequences of suburbanization in the state. Texas is no longer the bastion of rural life in the United States but now—for better or worse—represents the leading edge of suburban living. This important book offers a first step in coming to grips with that reality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Squatting is currently a global phenomenon. A concomitant of economic development and social conflict, squatting attracts public attention because – implicitly or explicitly – it questions property relations from the perspective of the basic human need for shelter. So far neglected by historical inquiry, squatters have played an important role in the history of urban development and social movements, not least by contributing to change in concepts of property and the distribution and utilization of urban space. An interdisciplinary circle of authors demonstrates how squatters have articulated their demands for participation in the housing market and public space in a whole range of contexts, and how this has brought them into conflict and/or cooperation with the authorities. The volume examines housing struggles and the occupation of buildings in the Global "North," but it is equally concerned with land acquisition and informal settlements in the Global "South." In the context of the former, squatting tends to be conceived as social practice and collective protest, whereas self-help strategies of the marginalized are more commonly associated with the southern hemisphere. This volume’s historical perspective, however, helps to overcome the north-south dualism in research on squatting.
