Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inequality endangers the fabric of our societies, distorts the functioning of democracy, and derails the globalization process. Yet, it has only recently been recognized as a problem worth examining. Why has this issue been neglected for so long? In Inequality: A Short History, Michele Alacevich and Anna Soci discuss the emergence of the inequality question in the twentieth century and explain how it is related to current issues such as globalization and the survival of democracy. The authors also discuss trends and the future of inequality. Inequality is a pressing issue that not only affects living standards, but is also inextricably linked to the way our democracies work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work is constantly reshaped by technological progress. New ways of production are adopted, markets expand, and societies evolve. But some changes provoke more attention than others, in part due to the vast uncertainty involved in making predictions about the future. The 2019 World Development Report will study how the nature of work is changing as a result of advances in technology today. Technological progress disrupts existing systems. A new social contract is needed to smooth the transition and guard against rising inequality. Significant investments in human capital throughout a person’s lifecycle are vital to this effort. If workers are to stay competitive against machines they need to train or retool existing skills. A social protection system that includes a minimum basic level of protection for workers and citizens can complement new forms of employment. Improved private sector policies to encourage startup activity and competition can help countries compete in the digital age. Governments also need to ensure that firms pay their fair share of taxes, in part to fund this new social contract. The 2019 World Development Report presents an analysis of these issues based upon the available evidence.

Book excerpt: Using original sources--such as newspaper articles, silent movies, letters, autobiographies, and interviews--Ilaria Serra depicts a large tapestry of images that accompanied mass Italian migration to the U.S. at the turn of the twentieth century. She chooses to translate the Italian concept of immaginario with the Latin imago that felicitously blends the double English translation of the word as "imagery" and "imaginary." Imago is a complex knot of collective representations of the immigrant subject, a mental production that finds concrete expression; impalpable, yet real. The "imagined immigrant" walks alongside the real one in flesh and rags.

Book excerpt: Acknowledging that states are faced with societal problems too complex for existing approaches, this in-depth guide to transition management suggests combining long-term vision and short-term experiments in a selective participatory process that supports policy integration, social learning, and social innovation. The book covers the principle's first five years of theory and practice in the Netherlands, making it a unique account of an innovative experiment in policy theory and practice that is highly relevant in an international context.

Book excerpt: Two unaccompanied children travel across the Mediterranean in an overcrowded boat that has been designed to only make it halfway across… A 63-year-old man is woken one morning by border officers ‘acting on a tip-off’ and, despite having paid taxes for 28 years, is suddenly cast into the detention system with no obvious means of escape… An orphan whose entire life has been spent in slavery – first on a Ghanaian farm, then as a victim of trafficking – writes to the Home Office for help, only to be rewarded with a jail sentence and indefinite detention… These are not fictions. Nor are they testimonies from some distant, brutal past, but the frighteningly common experiences of Europe’s new underclass – its refugees. While those with ‘citizenship’ enjoy basic human rights (like the right not to be detained without charge for more than 14 days), people seeking asylum can be suspended for years in Kafka-esque uncertainty. Here, poets and novelists retell the stories of individuals who have direct experience of Britain’s policy of indefinite immigration detention. Presenting their accounts anonymously, as modern day counterparts to the pilgrims’ stories in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, this book offers rare, intimate glimpses into otherwise untold suffering.

Book excerpt: A new translation of Bassani's moving novel of childhood friendship and the unexpected loss of innocence The years lived since then have not, in the end, been of any use: I haven't managed to remedy the suffering which has remained there like a hidden wound, secretly bleeding. In the fourth book of the Romanzo di Ferrara cycle, Bassani paints a moving portrait of a 1930s childhood in which even the familiar classroom and playground dramas begin to reflect the sinister forces at work in fascist Italy. This powerful tale of friendship and rivalry in the face of the ever encroaching spectre of adulthood adds yet another intricate thread to Bassani's rich tapestry of his native city, Ferrara. 'Giorgio Bassani is one of the great witnesses of this century, and one of its great artists' Guardian 'Powerful new translations . . . Bassani began as a poet, and McKendrick's redelivery of this taut uncompromising fiction reveals resonance and generosity' Ali Smith

Book excerpt: Perception and concepts involving the overlaying of the urban and the rural require new impulses, in order to be able to discuss visions of a spatial future. Contrary to outdated dystopian concepts of urban and rural, Territories is targeted towards rural-urban interfaces - in terms of space, function, and significance. How can implicit knowledge be used systematically for these new perspectives and how can knowledge be gained by design? How can this approach contribute to relating development strategies to places and spaces in a new way, with regard both to public awareness and to increasingly separate specialist policies? Territories - Rural-urban Strategies introduces innovative design and research perspectives of urbanism, landscape and architecture from Italy, Spain and Germany in view of this discussion, with contributions from Manuel Gausa, Mose Ricci, and Carles Llop. The basis for this was a conference in April 2016 as part of the 'Hochschuldialog Sudeuropa' (University Dialog Southern Europe) promoted by DAAD, as a cooperation between the Chair for Regional Building and Urban Planning at Leibniz Universitat Hannover and the Department of Architecture at the University of Palermo. SELLING POINT: * Territories - Rural-urban Strategies studies the dynamics of larger rural-urban spaces from a design perspective 120 colour images

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers originates with a workshop held 24-25 September 2015 in Villa Lante al Gianicolo, Rome. The workshop brought together a number of scholars working in the fields Arabic Studies, Greek and Latin Studies, Septuaginta Studies, and Iranian Studies. The workshop concentrated on the transmission of texts and ideas across language barriers in the Eastern Mediterranean. The main focus was on literary and historical texts, but also scientific, pseudoscientific, and religious texts were discussed. The workshop and the resulting collection of articles shows clearly that there is still much to do in the field of translation studies in the Long Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The various cultures around the Mediterranean have always lived in close contact with each other, and translation of texts has played a central role in the intellectual interaction of these cultures. While parts of this interaction have received scholarly attention, others have been almost neglected. The aim of this volume is to direct attention to the manifold and vivid culture of translation around the Mediterranean.
