Book excerpt: As part of the Metalworking Process and Equipment Program, a survey was conducted to collect and summarize information on deformation characteristics of metals and their effect on processing operations. This report presents information obtained from reports on Governmentsponsored work and from articles in technical publications. The report covers eight subjects: extrusion, forging, rolling, thermal mechanical variables affecting the properties of refractory metals and alloys, development of preferred orientations, anisotropy of strength and ductility, high-strain-rate deformation, and strain aging. In order to be useful to engineering students and production engineers the topics are treated in two ways. Generalized discussions of common processes point out why specific variables must be modified in order to deform certain types of metals satisfactorily. When practical, data on the more-difficultto-form metals are used to illustrate the principles, limitations, and effects of the processes. The objective is to help the non-specialist recognize the implications of specific findings and to apply them to specific operations. (Author).

Book excerpt: Machine Tool Structures, Volume 1 deals with fundamental theories and calculation methods for machine tool structures. Experimental investigations into stiffness are discussed, along with the application of the results to the design of machine tool structures. Topics covered range from static and dynamic stiffness to chatter in metal cutting, stability in machine tools, and deformations of machine tool structures. This volume is divided into three sections and opens with a discussion on stiffness specifications and the effect of stiffness on the behavior of the machine under forced vibration conditions. The following chapters explore the stability of the machine structure against chatter; methods of stability analysis; tests and principles of dampers; chatter during grinding operations; and stresses and deformations of closed box structures subjected to bending and shear. Calculation methods for determining stiffness constants of a structure's individual parts, as well as methods for determining the resulting stiffnesses, modal shapes, and their parameters, are also described. The final chapter presents systematic procedures for the analysis of machine tool structures. This book is intended for university students, research workers, and designers.

Book excerpt: During the last two decades, a tremendous growth in the popularity and applications of computers in manufacturing has occurred. Computer aided design, computer-aided manufacturing, flexible manufacturing systems, group technology and many others are considered by many manufacturing executives as the most promising technologies and philosophies that, if successfully implemented, can reduce costs and enable the US manufacturing companies to become more competitive in the global market. In the computer-integrated manufacturing environ ment, the decision processes are often more involved. The decision makers are frequently required to have access to a vast amount of data to support and analyze their complex decision problems at strategic and tactical levels. Decision support systems are often referred to as computer-based information technologies that allow the decision makers to interactively communicate and solve the decision problems. Manufacturing Decision Support Systems is intended to report the latest developments and address the central issues in this area. This volume consists of 14 refereed chapters, written by leading researchers from academia and industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles and Applications of Tribology provides a mechanical engineering perspective of the fundamental understanding and applications of tribology. This book is organized into two parts encompassing 16 chapters that cover the principles of friction and different types of lubrication. Chapter 1 deals with the immense scope of tribology and the range of applications in the existing technology, and Chapter 2 is devoted entirely to the evaluation and measurement of surface texture. Chapters 3 to 5 present the fundamental concepts underlying the friction of metals, elastomers, and other materials. The principles of hydrodynamic lubrication are briefly discussed in Chapter 6, and the mechanisms of boundary and elastohydrodynamic lubrication are examined in Chapters 7 and 8. Chapter 9 is a generalized treatise on wear and abrasion phenomena in metals and elastomers, whereas Chapter 10 deals with the internal friction in solids, liquids, and gases. Chapter 11 is an abbreviated yet thorough treatment of experimental methods used in tribological studies. The remaining five chapters in this book are devoted to specific applications, including manufacturing processes, automotive applications, transportation, locomotion, bearing design, and miscellaneous. This book is an ideal source for mechanical engineering students.

This book discusses the advances in pneumatic positioning device in the machine tool laboratories. Organized into 41 chapters, this book starts with an overview of the pneumatic digital and analogue elements used in designing the control loop. This text then explains the control system for the cylindrical grinding process developed by fluid logic elements and the diaphragm-type fluid logic element used in the control system. Other chapters consider the causes of inaccuracies on a finished machined workpiece produced by a numerically controlled machine tool. This book discusses as well the machine errors that are corrected by instrumentation, the details of this installation, and the characteristics of the instrumentation required. The final chapter deals with the basic characteristics of material flow during closed die forging. This book is a valuable resource for production and mechanical engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of the classic textbook has been written to provide a completely up-to-date text for students of mechanical, industrial, manufacturing and production engineering, and is an indispensable reference for professional industrial engineers and managers. In his outstanding book, Professor Katsundo Hitomi integrates three key themes into the text: * manufacturing technology * production management * industrial economics Manufacturing technology is concerned with the flow of materials from the acquisition of raw materials, through conversion in the workshop to the shipping of finished goods to the customer. Production management deals with the flow of information, by which the flow of materials is managed efficiently, through planning and control techniques. Industrial economics focuses on the flow of production costs, aiming to minimise these to facilitate competitive pricing. Professor Hitomi argues that the fundamental purpose of manufacturing is to create tangible goods, and it has a tradition dating back to the prehistoric toolmakers. The fundamental importance of manufacturing is that it facilitates basic existence, it creates wealth, and it contributes to human happiness - manufacturing matters. Nowadays we regard manufacturing as operating in these other contexts, beyond the technological. It is in this unique synthesis that Professor Hitomi's study constitutes a new discipline: manufacturing systems engineering - a system that will promote manufacturing excellence. Key Features: * The classic textbook in manufacturing engineering * Fully revised edition providing a modern introduction to manufacturing technology, production managment and industrial economics * Includes review questions and problems for the student reader
