Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How many times have you thought about your own baptism? If you are one of the many who have been brought up in a church that includes infants, you probably don't even remember the waters running down. In our hurried world, not many stop to question a sacrament performed so long ago. Yet biblically, the sign was meant to signify your personal relationship with the God of the universe. What could be more important than this? At present, we face the reality that the way baptism is practiced has no choice but to portray crucial elements of the cross-covenant. Does this arrangement merely offer us salvation, or does it signify our actual participation in the redemptive work of Christ? Down through the centuries, whole denominations have divided sharply over the issue, a situation that still remains with us. But for those caught under the waters, a burning question lingers-where in all of this do I stand with God? On a personal level, if you were unaware of the proceedings on that special day, one might be very surprised to learn how Old Testament circumcision answers this most important question. From its historical origins, spiritual realities, and harsh consequences, the practice of infant baptism must be revealed for what it is--and is not. This book serves as a powerful resource for both layman and clergy to take a much deeper glimpse into the nature of covenant relationships. Once inside, the reader will come to understand all that has happened to both the Church and the Gospel message ever since infant membership became a cultural norm. A comprehensive effort in returning jurisdiction over the baptismal waters back to the priesthood of Christ, this works will possess lasting value for anyone who wants to stand upright and true before the King.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear readers, there are numerous religions and doctrines existed in this world. How many of them are established by the true God? How many of them are established by the evil Satan who was unwilling to let humans to come into true divinity? It is written in the Genesis that during the period of Old Testament, the true God appeared before Abraham and established the circumcision as a token and as an agreement. During the period of Old Testament God appeared before Moses on the Mount Sinai and entrusted him with the Ten Commandments along with the principles to follow, restrictions to abide by, constitutional administration, law and order etc., and made Moses to present them in the covenant. In this same covenant, commencement of the ritual of circumcision related to heart is made besides giving importance to circumcision. Jeremiah 9: 25 it is said that whoever leads a truthful and honest life is recognized as the Lord’s close relations. In this way, the circumcision ritual was followed for some period. The principal personalities for the New Testament period, John who offered baptism and Jesus Christ also were performed the ritual of circumcision. Jesus Christ, the replica of the true God also was offered baptism through John. John received baptism during New Testament period through Lord’s manifestation. He executed the order of the Lord. As revealed by the Lord Jesus Christ, baptism must be embraced by means of water and Spirit, because, it is considered as the first step to have belief and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. The Holy Bible says, “One who embraces baptism with complete belief is always protected.” This is the truth revealed by Holy Bible. Whether one follows the ritual of circumcision or not, embracing baptism with complete faith is the important fact. Jesus Christ who embraced baptism himself revealed that there was baptism which he was to embrace. Luke 12:50. So, every devotee who embraced baptism should comprehend what is baptism which one has to receive through this book. Baptism is embraced by people of different churches in different methods. Today, Christians of every nook and corner of the world are embracing through immersing in water or sprinkling of water or swearing oaths. But the Holy Bible reveals how to embrace baptism in firm version. Therefore, in my opinion, those who had already embraced baptism and those who wish to embrace it should read this book, learn the secrets of baptism and better accept baptism once again in the correct method. This is because; Paul offered baptism himself to those who were already baptized once and also offered them the Holy Spirit. Through this book, I suggest everyone that one should read this book assiduously every nook and corner, receive the complete gist of it and with complete faith, can embrace baptism through water and the Spirit as prescribed in the Holy Bible

Book excerpt: Baptism has been a contested practice from the very beginning of the church. In this volume, Ben Witherington rethinks the theology of baptism and does so in constant conversation with the classic theological positions and central New Testament texts. By placing baptism in the context of the covenant, Witherington shows how advocates of both believer's baptism and infant baptism have added some water to both their theology and practice of baptism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is believer’s baptism the clear teaching of the New Testament Scriptures? What are the historical and theological challenges to believer’s baptism? What are the practical applications for believer’s baptism today? Volume two in the NEW AMERICAN COMMENTARY STUDIES IN BIBLE & THEOLOGY (NACSBT) series for pastors, advanced Bible students, and other deeply committed laypersons addresses these compelling questions. Indeed, Believer’s Baptism begins with the belief that believer’s baptism (as opposed to infant baptism or other faith proclaiming methods) is the clear teaching of the New Testament. Along the way, the argument is supported by written contributions from Andreas Kostenberger, Robert Stein, Thomas Schreiner, Stephen Wellum, Steve McKinion, Jonathan Rainbow, Shawn Wright, and Mark Dever. Users will find this an excellent extension of the long-respected NEW AMERICAN COMMENTARY.

Book excerpt: "Scripture is far from silent on the subject of baptism, yet history is strewn with such a variety of perspectives that it becomes difficult to gain a clear view of what the Bible itself actually has to say: How would the original readers of Acts, Romans, or Colossians have understood the texts concerning baptism when they read them for the very first time? How do readers of today understand the baptismal references of the New Testament if they have no particular commitment to a certain theological point of view? In thirteen chapters, Dr. Cottrell discusses the twelve major texts in the New Testament and does so by examining the meaning of the original words, the historical background, and the comparative references. The texts covered: Matthew 28:18-20, Mark 16:15-16, John 3:3-5, Acts 2:38-39, Acts 22:16, Romans 6:3-4, 1 Corinthians 12:13, Galatians 3:26-27, Ephesians 5:25-27, Colossians 2:11-13, Titus 3:5, 1 Peter 3:21"--P. Book excerpt: "John and Christ administered baptism totins corpore submersione, by the submission of the whole body The very word 'baptize' signifies to immerse entirely, and it is certain that immersion was the practice of the ancient Church." John Calvin "The Greek word baptizo means 'immerse' or 'plunge', and the word baptisma means 'immersion'." Martin Luther "Immersion of the whole body was used from the beginning, which expresses the force of the word 'baptize', whence John baptized in a river. It was afterward changed into sprinkling, though it is uncertain when or by whom." Ulrich Zwingli "Baptism is immersion in water." Philip Melancthon "It is true that there is no express command to baptize infants in the New Testament, no express record of the baptism of infants, and no passages so stringently implying it that we must infer from them that infants were baptized." B. B. Warfield "There is no Biblical basis for infant baptism-this tradition is simply an old error of the church." Karl Barth

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baptism. Simple - and yet a most powerful and far-reaching action. Indeed, it overflows with a range of blessings within a new relationship with the Creator of the universe. We receive Grace and Mercy, and God's Glory; we have His seal and "earnest" to confirm His promises, and are authorized to be Jehovah's "Image" - His representatives - to this cosmos. We are adopted as children in God's Family, made members within Christ's Body, placed into His Bride (the Church), become citizens of His Kingdom, and are His priests to His Creation. We are born again, become new creations, are raised to be temples of the Holy Spirit, and bear the fruit of the Spirit. We are valued for the individuals we are and have our place as our Lord does His work through us in our world. This relationship is from God's heart, He yearns to have with all humans, from infant to the aged. All we do is to have applied "the Water with the Word" in faith. And it is enough.
