Book excerpt: Circuits of Visibility explores transnational media environments as pathways to understand the gendered constructions and contradictions that underwrite globalization. Tracking the ways in which gendered subjects are produced and defined in transnationally networked, media saturated environments, Circuits of Visibility presents sixteen essays that collectively advance a discussion about sexual politics, media, technology, and globalization. Covering the internet, television, books, telecommunications, newspapers, and activist media work, the volume directs focused attention to the ways in which gender and sexuality issues are constructed and mobilized across the globe. Contributors’ essays span diverse global sites from Myanmar and Morocco to the Balkans, France, U.S., and China, and cover an extensive terrain from consumption, aesthetics and whiteness to masculinity, transnational labor, and cultural citizenship. Circuits of Visibility initiates a necessary conversation and political critique about the mediated global terrain on which sexuality is defined, performed, regulated, made visible, and experienced.

Book excerpt: A practical explanation to pilots of how and why ATC procedures, working methods and RT phraseology is used. Aimed at pilots from trainees through to experienced professionals it is written in a very practical sense with a view on the real world with real people. As such, it is not a lecture-like reproduction of the rules, but explains the meanings and reasons for ATC procedures, clearances and phraseology. The intention is that it will give pilots a better understanding of the environment they are operating in, improve airmanship, improve pilot-controller understanding and consequently improve safety by giving pilots an understanding of how and why ATC use certain methods and phraseology. The author is an ex-air traffic controller, now a commercial pilot, and so is in the ideal position to explain what pilots are not taught about ATC including the ATC related issues that are useful and, in some cases, necessary for pilots to know. Real life examples and questions from fellow pilots are used to explain the subjects in a practical method. Consequently many examples are given of how to prevent incidents by including in the explanations how incorrect perceptions and misunderstandings can arise without such knowledge of ATC procedures and the issuing of clearances. Subjects include: IFR, VFR, Special VFR, collision prevention, operations inside and outside controlled airspace, weather, emergencies, explanations of clearances and how responsibilities change between the controller and the pilot with certain clearances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the second edition of Design to Test. The first edition, written by myself and H. Frank Binnendyk and first published in 1982, has undergone several printings and become a standard in many companies, even in some countries. Both Frank and I are very proud of the success that our customers have had in utilizing the information, all of it still applicable to today's electronic designs. But six years is a long time in any technology field. I therefore felt it was time to write a new edition. This new edition, while retaining the basic testability prin ciples first documented six years ago, contains the latest material on state-of-the-art testability techniques for electronic devices, boards, and systems and has been completely rewritten and up dated. Chapter 15 from the first edition has been converted to an appendix. Chapter 6 has been expanded to cover the latest tech nology devices. Chapter 1 has been revised, and several examples throughout the book have been revised and updated. But some times the more things change, the more they stay the same. All of the guidelines and information presented in this book deal with the three basic testability principles-partitioning, control, and visibility. They have not changed in years. But many people have gotten smarter about how to implement those three basic test ability principles, and it is the aim of this text to enlighten the reader regarding those new (and old) testability implementation techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in Lagos, Nigeria, practice a spectacularly feminine form of black beauty. From cascading hair extensions to immaculate makeup to high heels, their style permeates both day-to-day life and media representations of women not only in a swatch of Africa but across an increasingly globalized world. Simidele Dosekun's interviews and critical analysis consider the female subjectivities these women are performing and desiring. She finds that the women embody the postfeminist idea that their unapologetically immaculate beauty signals—but also constitutes—feminine power. As empowered global consumers and media citizens, the women deny any need to critique their culture or to take part in feminism's collective political struggle. Throughout, Dosekun unearths evocative details around the practical challenges to attaining their style, examines the gap between how others view these women and how they view themselves, and engages with ideas about postfeminist self-fashioning and subjectivity across cultures and class. Intellectually provocative and rich with theory, Fashioning Postfeminism reveals why women choose to live, embody, and even suffer for a fascinating performative culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-five years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, this collection of essays examines the ways in which popular media re-construct ideas and ideals of femininity in the post-socialist cultural space. The authors explore a comprehensive range of questions including: How have post-socialist women engaged with media as media producers and consumers, as well as objects of media representation? What are the consequences of the commodification of femininity in the post-socialist context? How does the female body serve as a battleground for the enactment and renegotiation of gendered identities and ideologies? How can we understand and theorize post-socialist women’s activist movements? In seeking answers to such questions, this volume highlights the need to reconsider feminism as a political and theoretical project with many faces. It bridges research on the mediation of post-socialist femininities with broader concerns about the transnational trajectories of feminism today. This book was originally published as a special issue of Feminist Media Studies.

CEF-158 Richard Feynman was the first to propose the idea of applying the laws of quantum physics to perform computational tasks in 1982. David Deutsch then generalised the notion of a Turing machine to the quantum realm, in-troducing the notion of a universal quantum computer. In this system, the bit (the classical unit of information) is replaced by the quantum bit or qubit. The quantum superposition principle allows the qubit to be in any superposition state a |0⟩ + b |1⟩, instead of being in just one of the two states 0 or 1 as a classical bit. This "quantum parallelism" is the key property of a quantum computer, which provides access to an exponentially larger set of states to process information. It makes it possible to simulate quantum systems that classical computers cannot afford due to their size. It could also solve new tasks, as creating true random numbers, and improve others such as the database searching, and prime number factorisation.

Book excerpt: This thesis explores several fundamental topics in mesoscopic circuitries that incorporate few electronic conduction channels. It reports a series of long-awaited experiments that establish a new state of the art. The first experiments address the quantized character of charge in circuits. We demonstrate the charge quantization criterion, observe the predicted charge quantization scaling and a crossover toward a universal behavior as temperature is increased. The second set of experiments addresses the unconventional quantum critical physics that arises in the multichannel Kondo model. We observe the predicted universal Kondo fixed points and validate the numerical renormalization group scaling curves. Away from the quantum critical point, we obtain a direct visualization of the development of a second-order quantum phase transition.

Reuther and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2011 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superconducting quantum circuits are promising candidates for solid-state based quantum computation. However, minimizing dissipation caused by external noise sources remains a tough challenge. Here, we present an analytic dissipative theory for a complex circuit of two resonators coupled via a flux qubit. In this 'quantum switch', the qubit acts as a tunable coupler between the resonators, which enables switching their interaction on and off. A natural application of this setup is to create entangled two-resonator states. However, it turns out that, even if the qubit has no dynamics, qubit dissipation affects the resonators to a considerable degree. For successful quantum information processing, it is desirable to demonstrate the coherence of qubit time evolution in single-shot experiments without too much backaction on the qubit. In the second part of this thesis, we present a novel scheme for a time-resolved single-run measurement of coherent qubit dynamics. For a charge qubit probed by a weak high-frequency signal, we find that the reflected outgoing signal possesses a time-dependent phase shift that is proportional to a qubit observable. A similar approach is presented for a flux qubit coupled to a resonantly driven high-frequency oscillator, which serves as a meter device for monitoring the time-resolved qubit dynamics.

Book excerpt: With the election of Barack Obama, the idea that American society had become postracial—that is, race was no longer a main factor in influencing and structuring people's lives—took hold in public consciousness, increasingly accepted by many. The contributors to Racism Postrace examine the concept of postrace and its powerful history and allure, showing how proclamations of a postracial society further normalize racism and obscure structural antiblackness. They trace expressions of postrace over and through a wide variety of cultural texts, events, and people, from sports (LeBron James's move to Miami), music (Pharrell Williams's “Happy”), and television (The Voice and HGTV) to public policy debates, academic disputes, and technology industries. Outlining how postrace ideologies confound struggles for racial justice and equality, the contributors open up new critical avenues for understanding the powerful cultural, discursive, and material conditions that render postrace the racial project of our time.
