Book excerpt: This text and commentary on Cicero's Verrines II.4 will guide students of Latin in translating a classical piece on political corruption in ancient Rome. Cicero's Verrine Oration II.4 is a comprehensive and versatile tool that will assist students in the early stages of reading and understanding Latin literary texts. Dickison's volume includes the complete Oxford Classical text of Cicero's Verrines II.4. Her detailed commentary provides students with generous assistance in identifying and managing difficult constructions and in recognizing forms and supplying definitions for vocabulary. When translations are given for difficult phrases, a literal rendering of the Latin is often included as a means of help. A brief summary in English of each section accompanies the commentary. A glossary of every world in the text helps students with a modest knowledge of Latin to read the text without experiencing undue frustration.

Book Synopsis Brill's Companion to Cicero by : James M. May
Download or read book Brill's Companion to Cicero written by James M. May and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2002-09-01 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is intended as a companion to the study of Cicero's oratory and rhetoric for both students and experts in the field: for the neophyte, it provides a starting point; for the veteran Ciceronian scholar, a place for renewing the dialogue about issues concerning Ciceronian oratory and rhetoric; for all, a site of engagement at various levels with Ciceronian scholarship and bibliography. The book is arranged along roughly chronological lines and covers most aspects of Cicero's oratory and rhetoric. The particular strength of this companion resides in the individual, often very original approach to sundry topics by an array of impressive contributors, all of whom have spent large portions of their careers concentrating upon the oratorical and rhetorical oeuvre of Cicero. A bibliography of relevant items from the past 25 years, keyed to specific Ciceronian works, completes the volume. Brill's Companion to Cicero will become the standard reference work on Cicero for many years.

Book Synopsis Identities, Ethnicities and Gender in Antiquity by : Jacqueline Fabre-Serris
Download or read book Identities, Ethnicities and Gender in Antiquity written by Jacqueline Fabre-Serris and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of ‘identity’ arises for any individual or ethnic group when they come into contact with a stranger or another people. Such contact results in the self-conscious identification of ways of life, customs, traditions, and other forms of society as one’s own specific cultural features and the construction of others as characteristic of peoples from more or less distant lands, described as very ‘different’. Since all societies are structured by the division between the sexes in every field of public and private activity, the modern concept of ‘gender’ is a key comparator to be considered when investigating how the concepts of identity and ethnicity are articulated in the evaluation of the norms and values of other cultures. The object of this book is to analyze, at the beginning Western culture, various examples of the ways the Greeks and Romans deployed these three parameters in the definition of their identity, both cultural and gendered, by reference to their neighbours and foreign nations at different times in their history. This study also aims to enrich contemporary debates by showing that we have yet to learn from the ancients’ discussions of social and cultural issues that are still relevant today.
