This statement is made without the slightest desire to cast aspersions upon the excellent work in Latin done in many schools. I am firmly convinced, however, from my own experience and from the testimony of other men, that Latin is poorly taught in the majority of our Southern high schools and preparatory schools. No one who has had charge of Freshman classes needs argument from a fellow-sufferer to prove that this is true. The notes in this volume are, there fore, quite full. The introduction has'been made very brief, because of the well-nigh universal habit among students of skipping that portion of a textbook altogether. Subjects usually treated at length in introductions are here set forth at proper points in the commentary. The selections which appear in this book were made with a view to throwing light upon Cicero's habits and character, and upon the life in which he moved. Although this basis of choice coincides with that adopted by practically all recent editors, yet there are several letters presented here which are not found in the editions in general use at the present time. In their edition of Cicero's works the letters of Cicero to his friends, and to his brother Quintus, occupy the ninth volume (Leipsic 1866); and those to Atticus and Brutus the tenth volume (1867). There are some passages in these selected letters which Baiter and Kayser, and all critical editors, are obliged to print in a hopelessly corrupt state. But inasmuch as the present edition is intended for the use of school, it seemed desirable to adopt in most cases such conjectural emendations as might enable the passage to bear translation. Beside these graver departures from the text of Baiter, some deviations in spelling have been adopted. The brackets and italics are form Baiter and Kayser, and denote respectively that the words so treated ought probably to be omitted, or inserted. The letters of Cicero appear to have been widely known down to the latest times of the Western Empire, but to have wholly fallen out of knowledge before the middle of the twelfth century. Their rediscovery was reserved for a man who merited such fortune, one of the foremost of the revivers of literature. Below, in the valley of the Garigliano, a church dedicated to St Dominic stands upon the site of a Roman villa; and it was here that Marcus Tullius Cicero first saw the light of day. His father belonged to an equestrian family, a fact which, as we shall see, explains much in the life of one who has been largely misrepresented by both friend and foe. When Marcus was of an age to begin his schooling, the family moved to Rome. Here he was initiated into the pleasures of literature by the famous Greek poet and grammarian, Archias of Antioch. Before assuming the toga virilis in 90 B.C., he was a pupil of Phaedrus the Epicurean, and applied himself to rhetoric in the school of Diodotus. These initial stages of his education were interrupted by a period of military service under Pompeius Strabo and Sulla (89 B.C.). He took no part in the civil war, but resumed his training in rhetoric under Philo of Larissa and Molon of Rhodes, while the great jurisconsult Q. Mucius Scaevola undertook the direction of his legal studies. After the final overthrow of the Marian party, Cicero entered upon his forensic career, and immediately established himself among the most eminent counsel at the Roman Bar. Fifty-six of his speeches, composed on a variety of occasions between 81 and 43 B.C., have survived the wreck of time: but since that aspect of his life and work does not fall within the scope of our present volume, we need only remark that by his subtle persuasion, his wit, his stately panegyric and overwhelming invective, Cicero ranks with Demosthenes as one of the greatest orators known to history - a ranking that Churchill alone among modern orators can claim.
