Download or read book Reanimating Places written by Tom Mels and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time-space relationships are central to human geography. This book seeks to reanimate time-space, by considering the links between lived experience, various temporalities and particular places in terms of compounded and contested rhythms. Time-space rhythms emphasize the practical, symbolic, everyday and embodied qualities in the experience and making of our geographical environment. Bringing together a team of renowned geographers who have been exploring such ideas over the past decades, this book provides a unique and varied set of geographical approximations to the reanimation of place, nature and landscape, revealing a complex, disputed world of politics, sensory experiences and representations of space-time. Including case studies from Europe and North America, the book addresses some important issues, ranging from the symbolic orchestrations of landscape to deeply personal memories of particular natural rhythms.
Book Synopsis Targeted Transnationals by : Jenna Hennebry
Download or read book Targeted Transnationals written by Jenna Hennebry and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following 9/11, the securitization of state practices and policies has chipped away at the citizenship and personal rights of all Canadians, particularly those of Arab descent. This book argues that in a securitized global context and through racialized immigration and security policies, Arab Canadians have become "targeted transnationals." Media representations have further legitimized their homogenization and racialization. The contributors to this book examine state practices towards, and media representations of, Arab Canadians. They also present voices that counter the dominant discourse and trace forms of community resistance to the racialization of Arab Canadians.

Download or read book Wife or Worker? written by Nicola Piper and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2004-09-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume challenges the dominant discourse that perceives Asian women as either "mail-order" brides or overseas workers. Providing the first sustained critique of the artificial analytical division between brides and workers, the book demonstrates women's transition from brides to workers and from workers to brides. Focusing on how women workers use marriage as a strategy to gain citizenship and how migrants for marriage become workers, the authors present these modern Asian women in their multidimensional roles as wives, workers, mothers, and citizens.
Book Synopsis Constructing and Imagining Labour Migration by : Sandra Mantu
Download or read book Constructing and Imagining Labour Migration written by Sandra Mantu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Labour migration has been on the agenda of many countries around the globe at the same time as governments of both sending and receiving countries have been trying to develop regulatory mechanisms. This book opens the debate on the global politics of labour migration by proposing a re-assessment of the interaction between states regarding labour migration. Presenting case-specific scholarship from leading experts from five different continents, each contribution engages with the changing landscape of migration control and teases out emerging control patterns, dynamics and correlations that can be made between them and existing control paradigms. The multidisciplinary and global focus in 'Constructing and Imagining Labour Migration' sheds much needed light on the mechanisms deployed by states in their attempts to control labour migration and on the manner in which these mechanisms impact upon migrants themselves, leaving some caught up in the politics of labour market control
Book Synopsis Gender, migration and the global race for talent by : Anna Boucher
Download or read book Gender, migration and the global race for talent written by Anna Boucher and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global race for skilled immigrants seeks to attract the best global workers. In the pursuit of these individuals, governments may incidentally discriminate on gender grounds. Existing gendered differences in the global labour market related to life course trajectories, pay gaps and gendered divisions in occupational specialisation are also present in skilled immigration selection policies. Presenting the first book-length account of the global race for talent from a gender perspective, Gender, migration and the global race for talent will be read by graduate students, researchers, policy-makers and practitioners in the fields of immigration studies, political science, public policy, sociology and gender studies, and Australian and Canadian studies.
