Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simon Jenkins has travelled the length and breadth of England to select his thousand best churches. Organised by county, each church is described - often with delightful asides - and given a star-rating from one to five. All of the county sections are prefaced by a map locating each church, and lavishly illustrated with colour photos from the Country Life archive. Jenkins contends that these churches house a gallery of vernacular art without equal in the world. Here, he brings that museum to public attention.

Book excerpt: This volume sheds light on the pride of the region - the great medieval churches of York Minster, the Minster and St Mary at Beverley, and Holy Trinity, Hull but also on less well known architectural pleasures of town and county. Outstanding Victorian village churches, including masterpieces by Street & Pearson, are as rewarding as the major country houses of Burton Agnes, Burton Constable and Sledmere. The countryside offes a wide range of monuments, from the beautifully sited ruins of Kirkham Priory to the spectacular Humber Bridge. Farmhouses and cottages of the Wolds, picturesque estate villages and chapels, and industrial structures are all brought into focus. A large section is devoted to York and includes a survey of the historic buildings of the city centre from the Roman period onwards. This is complemented by a detailed exploration of York's eighteenth and nineteenth-century suburbs. Equal care has been applied to the descriptions of Beverley, with its attractive townscape, and the port of Hull, where unexpected highlights include seventeenth-century merchant houses, Georgian almshouses, ornate Victorian pubs, and grand Edwardian public buildings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to our perception of the centrality of the churches in English life in the nineteenth century, the disappointing results of the 1851 Religious Census led religious leaders to seek a variety of ways to increase religious allegiance as the century progressed. The apparent apathy and lack of interest in formal religion on the part of the working classes was particularly galling, and the various denominations tried hard to attract them through evangelical missions as well as social and charitable ventures which sometimes competed with religious concerns, to the latter’s detriment. This book traces the motivations, concerns and efforts of the churches, particularly in the period between 1870 and 1920, and the ambivalent responses of ordinary people. The Education Act of 1870 led to the churches losing their hold on the education of the young, a consequence foreseen by many church leaders, but unable to be prevented. By 1920 it was apparent that the churches’ optimism regarding an increased role with a war-weary population would not be fulfilled. The focus is on the city of Leeds, representative of the industrialised urban areas with burgeoning populations which proved to be such a challenge to the churches, at the same time stimulating them to ever-greater efforts.

Book excerpt: A handpicked selection of Britain's most interesting diminutive churches, written in an amusing, accessible style to appeal to modern readers. Puts the spotlight on Britain's tiniest churches for the first time and uncovers their fascinating historical background. Includes up-to-date practical information on getting to each tiny church via public transport. Highlights special architectural features to look out for, all of which are represented by closeup color photos. Beautifully presented in full color throughout, the book uncovers 60 of the loveliest and most diminutive places of worship in Britain, many of which are known only to locals. Each church is so tiny that fewer than 50 people could fit comfortably inside, each is open to the public, and many boast fabulous wall paintings, stained glass, and artworks as well as fascinating histories. Representing a unique slice of British local history and attitudes, tiny churches are the great survivors of the world. Still standing after centuries of religious unrest and the meddling of the Victorian "church improvers," they live on in this most irreligious of centuries, scattered all over Britain. Each entry features information on how and when to visit the church, a concise round-up of its history, and details of any must-see architectural features.
