Book excerpt: For nearly two millennia, despite repeated prohibitions, Christian women have preached. Some have preached in official settings; others have found alternative routes for expression. Prophecy, teaching, writing, and song have all filled a broad definition of preaching. This anthology, with essays by an international group of scholars from several disciplines, investigates the diverse voices of Christian women who claimed the authority to preach and prophesy. The contributors examine the centuries of arguments, grounded in Pauline injunctions, against women's public speech and the different ways women from the early years of the church through the twentieth century have nonetheless exercised religious leadership in their communities. Some of them based their authority solely on divine inspiration; others were authorized by independent-minded communities; a few were even recognized by the church hierarchy. With its lively accounts of women preachers and prophets in the Christian tradition, this exceptionally well-documented collection will interest scholars and general readers alike.

Although it covers critical issues such as authorship, background, and history, its primary focus is on the message and theology of the prophetic books and the contribution they make to the Christian canon. Particular attention is given to literary issues, such as the structure of each prophetic book. Full-color illustrations, diagrams, and artwork bring the text to life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A "powerful text" (Tavis Smiley) about how religion drove the fight for social justice in modern America American Prophets sheds critical new light on the lives and thought of seven major prophetic figures in twentieth-century America whose social activism was motivated by a deeply felt compassion for those suffering injustice. In this compelling and provocative book, acclaimed religious scholar Albert Raboteau tells the remarkable stories of Abraham Joshua Heschel, A. J. Muste, Dorothy Day, Howard Thurman, Thomas Merton, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Fannie Lou Hamer—inspired individuals who succeeded in conveying their vision to the broader public through writing, speaking, demonstrating, and organizing. Raboteau traces how their paths crossed and their lives intertwined, creating a network of committed activists who significantly changed the attitudes of several generations of Americans about contentious political issues such as war, racism, and poverty. Raboteau examines the influences that shaped their ideas and the surprising connections that linked them together. He discusses their theological and ethical positions, and describes the rhetorical and strategic methods these exemplars of modern prophecy used to persuade their fellow citizens to share their commitment to social change. A momentous scholarly achievement as well as a moving testimony to the human spirit, American Prophets represents a major contribution to the history of religion in American politics. This book is essential reading for anyone who is concerned about social justice, or who wants to know what prophetic thought and action can mean in today's world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early 1990, in response to apocalyptic prophecies given by her mother, Elizabeth Clare Prophet, Erin Prophet entered a network of underground bunkers in Montana along with members of her mother's Church Universal and Triumphant, a controversial New Age sect. Emerging to find the world still intact, Erin was forced into a radical reassessment of her life and her beliefs. She had spent her adolescence watching her mother vilified as a dangerous cult leader even while attempting to meet her expectations by becoming a "prophet" herself. Prophet's Daughter describes Erin's search for her mother's origins and motivations. With the craft of a storyteller, she describes the combination of health crises and external pressure that drove her mother's ever-more dire prophecies. She reveals how the allure of infallibility led her mother to a conspicuous downfall, and how her mother's rapidly progressing Alzheimer's disease truncated any hope of resolution. A remarkable memoir with implications for the dialog about power, group behavior and the future of religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God is reinstating the office of the prophet in today's New Testament Church. With the face of the occult on an increasing rise, church officials have questions concerning the office of the Prophet and its modern-day functions in the local church. They regularly discuss how to engage prophets in the church without surrendering authority over their sheep and control of the church's mandate. Church Prophets shows how churches can actually multiply their harvests through a quality prophetic institution. It is an indispensable tool for the pastor wanting to know how to comply with the Lord's new and insistent move. Church Prophets helps to enable pastors to evaluate prophetic messengers that they engage with and confirm their eligibility before they present them to their congregation. It is essential for any prophetic educator, minister, or trainer. The pastor or teacher will find that this book contains sound and balanced guidelines for the institution and regulation of the officer in the churches of God using His wisdom. Church Prophets also touches on other prophetic themes such as the godly church prophet, prophetic protocols, parameters, limits, and government; but the common recurring theme of this book is the importance of quickly establishing a functional pastor-prophet relationship.

Ondrey and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work compares the Minor Prophets commentaries of Theodore of Mopsuestia and Cyril of Alexandria, isolating the role each interpreter assigns the Twelve Prophets in their ministry to Old Testament Israel and the texts of the Twelve as Christian scripture. Hauna T. Ondrey argues that Theodore does acknowledge christological prophecies, as distinct from both retrospective accommodation and typology. A careful reading of Cyril's Commentary on the Twelve limits the prospective christological revelation he ascribes to the prophets and reveals the positive role he grants the Mosaic law prior to Christ's advent. Exploring secondly the Christian significance Theodore and Cyril assign to Israel's exile and restoration reveals that Theodore's reading of the Twelve Prophets, while not attempting to be christocentric, is nevertheless self-consciously Christian. Cyril, unsurprisingly, offers a robust Christian reading of the Twelve, yet this too must be expanded by his focus on the church and concern to equip the church through the ethical paideusis provided by the plain sense of the prophetic text. Revised descriptions of each interpreter lead to the claim that a recent tendency to distinguish the Old Testament interpretation of Theodore (negatively) and Cyril (positively) on the basis of their christocentrism obscures more than it clarifies and polarizes no less than earlier accounts of Antiochene/Alexandrian exegesis. The conclusion argues against replacing old dichotomies with new and advocates rather for an approach that takes seriously Theodore's positive account of the unity and telos of the divine economy and the full range of Cyril's interpretation.

Book excerpt: "A questioning world longs to know for sure what the Bible teaches about the purpose, identity and function of apostles and prophets. In this thoughtful and well-documneted treatise, Dr. T.L Lowery performs a valuable service for the church. As the original Twelve laid the foundation for the development of the people of God and the establishment of the church, today's apostles and prophets perform foundational ministry for the continuing building of the church. Each chapter explores facets of apostolic and prophetic ministry and clarifies what the Bible says. The principles related to the impartation and reception of spiritual giftedness is especially valuable in a day when the subject has become obscure and poorly understood. Apostles and prophets: Reclaiming the Biblical Gifts will answer a myriad of questions and explain the vital ministry of these gifted leaders who are available to God's church. "--page 4 of cover."
