Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church Missions This is the symbolizing of a real Church Mission. The giant upon whose shoulders is seated the Infant Saviour is the nation to whom, for the time, Christ has committed the office of evangelizing the world. It is a heavy duty, and the bearer bends under the weight of it; but in the act of performing it, he has acquired the strength to perform it. His proportions are already gigantic; he out-tops by the head and shoulders all the figures that are around him his limbs seem capable of sustaining far more than the weight they carry; and the fir tree, uprooted from where it grew beside his path - that is to say, the natural advantages which present them selves in the very path of his duty - supports his steps; for, be it observed, he is not taking a devious or arbitrary course, but follow ing the beaten path - the path marked out to him by the Eternal Wisdom, and direct Revelation of God. The remainder of the picture explains itself; it is the natural fruit of his labors. He carries the true Christ, and high and low, rich and poor, young and old, kings and subjects, priests and shep herds, alike blessed by the outstretched Hand, crowd after the giant that bears it. Willingly and cheerfully they swell his retinue, and contribute to his earthly pomp and glory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great First-Work of the Church, Missions The author of this little volume has given us a great truth in its title The Great first-work of the Church Is Missions. While most of us may not need anything further to convince us of this truth, we are all much in need of that more important thing - the dynamic of conviction that expresses this truth in the reality of service. If these chapters help to that end in any one of us, they will be fully worth while. The writer of this book needs no introduction in his own denomination. While his twenty-eight years in the mission work of western India; the faith and courage that led him to be the first to answer the call to pagan lands in the Church of the Brethren; his desire to maintain habits of study and investiga tion, which was expressed in his receiving a degree from Northwestern University, where he and his son Emmert spent a year in the graduate school, easily entitle W. B. Stover to honor and titles that would be the envy of most of us, yet he is best known and happiest as Bro. Stover, a friend of men, and a servant of the Lord. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Church Missions Missions, however short, could be properly given without some passing reference under Africa, to Moffat and Livingstone; under India, to Carey and Duff; under New Guinea, to Chalmers under China, to Friar John and Hudson Taylor; under Japan, to Xavier and Verbeck and Bishop Nicolai. And it would give an utterly false impression to the reader if the fact were not clearly stated that in almost every mission field the Anglican Missions are largely outnumbered by others, both in missionaries and in converts. N ever theless, the design of this book is to tell the story of the Anglican Missions and of them only. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church's Life: A Study of the Fundamentals of the Church's Mission The book, I think, contains nothing new. Indeed he would be venturesome who dared imagine that he had discovered anything new upon this well - worn topic. Still, the point Of view may, in some cases, be found to differ from that commonly occupied. I do not, for example, remember having seen in any book a statement Of the Objective Of the Church's mission as being the transmission Of life from those who have it to those who have it not. Certainly missions, as commonly defined, fall far short Of this, and hence do not appeal to the average layman. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise History of Missions The history of missions is the history of the extension of Christianity. It is thus a depart ment of general church history, and cannot be fully understood except as its relations to other departments are kept in mind. The progress of the Church has been by no means uniform. There have been periods of special missionary activity, others in which doctrinal statement, ecclesiastical organization, the consolidation and strengthening of church life, have absorbed attention. Each, however, has had its in uence on all the others, and the work as a whole has a unity which can only be realized as one takes a survey of the whole field. Such a survey it is the purpose of this book to give. There is no detailed statement of different epochs or of the various phases Of mission work. The aim is rather to indicate the general char acter of the epochs, show the mutual relation and in uence of the phases, and thus make it some what easier to place correctly the details as we come across them elsewhere. To use the phrase of one who has himself done much to help in the general knowledge of missions, Mr. John R. Mott, it lays the rails that connect the remoter sections and make passage from one to another possible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Decisive Hour of Christian Missions The World Missionary Conference held in Edinburgh in June of the present year constituted in its plan, in its personnel, in the Spirit which characterized it, and in its promise, the most Significant gathering ever held in the interest of the world's evangelization. In preparation for the Conference eight representative international Commissions had been at work for over eighteen months making a scientific investigation and study of some of the most pressing and vital problems Of Christian missions. Associated With these Commis Sions as correspondents were the principal missionaries and leaders of the Church on the mission fields, as well as many of the foremost thinkers and workers of the missionary forces at home. The reports re sulting from these special investigations have afforded a very comprehensive presentation of the Tacts about the main aspects of the missionary situation. Those who have had opportunity to examine the mass of evidence gathered by the Commissions and to listen to the discussions of the reports at the Edinburgh Con ference must have been impressed with the fact that the present is the decisive hour of Christian missions. In the history Of Christianity there has never been such'a remarkable conjunction of Opportunities and crises on all the principal mission fields and of favor ing circumstances and possibilities on the home field. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Christian Missions The story of missions, which reaches back to the beginning of the Christian era, and embraces almost every country in the world, cannot be told within the limits of a single volume. The task which I have ventured to undertake is of a far less ambitious character, my object being to provide the intelligent reader with an outline sketch of Christian missions which may enable him to obtain a correct perspective, but which will need to be filled in for each several country and period of history by much careful study. This volume is not intended to serve as a diction ary nor as a commentary upon missions, but as a text-book to encourage and facilitate their study. Those who have devoted the largest amount of time to such study will be most ready to forgive its imperfections and shortcomings. A well-known authority on the subject of Foreign Missions, to whom the task of writing this book was originally assigned, but who failed to respond to the invitation, wrote to its present author, You have an almost impossible task; I should absolutely quail at the work you are doing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on Missions As the New Model for Christian Missions has been republished in the United States, Mr. Orme's Introduction has a greater importance, than would otherwise be attached to it. Yet it will be found interesting and instructive, and well deserving of an attentive perusal, even by those who have not read the Essay, Which it is chiefly designed to controvert. The mind of Mr. Orme was vigorous and' well regulated; and though the church of Christ has been called to lament his decease since the publication of this volume, he will long continue to speak, in Eng land and America, by means of his Life and Times of Richard Baxter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Why and How of Foreign Missions Foreign missions are the realization of the world program of the Church of God, the International mind upon the highest level, and the emancipation of the Church from the pargghial and provincial into the wide spaces of the Kingdom of God. The Church was slow to realize its full mission, but gradually the splendid conception of a world-con quering gospel became clearer. Today the foreign missionary enterprise is the vastest work of the Church, as the facts that are given on other pages. Abundantly prove. A. E. Moule, in the midst of his duties, whilst discharging my lack of service at Hang chow. He would have been glad of the advantage of leisure to render it more complete and more graphic than it is. I have assisted in the duty of passing it through the press and can only thank God that a missionary narrative, in which I must needs feel so earnest and loving an interest, has been so well and candidly given. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Round About the Torres Straits: A Record of Australian Church Missions I was asked to write this little book at very short notice, and to reply as to whether I would do so or not by cable. This explains the fact of my venturing to write about the New Guinea Mission, about which, unlike the other Missions here referred to, I had no personal knowledge save my acquaintance with, and respect for, many of the workers. Having thus no option but to perform all or none of the task assigned to me, with some misgivings I determined to do what I had been asked to the best of my ability. I had almost completed for publication a much larger work on Tropical Australia at the time that I was asked to write this book on Australian Missions, and to a limited extent the two subjects overlap. I have, however, rewritten most of the matter required specially for this book, and have deferred the publication of the larger work. In any case, the extent of the matter common to the two books is not very large. I have, with the kind permission of the authors, made use of Mrs. Benson's (Miss Synge's) "Life of the Rev. A. A. Maclaren," Bishop Newton's "In Far New Guinea," and the Bishop of North Queensland's account of his visit to New Guinea. I have also been greatly assisted by the Rev. A. K. Chignell's "An Outpost in Papua," but, owing to lack of time, I was unable to ask his permission to make use of it. I am sure he will forgive me for doing so in memory of our first meeting in the wilds. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Lutheran Missions For many years there has been both a need and a call for a book on Lutheran missions, which could be used as a text book and also as a book of reference. Mrs. Lewars has met this need and answered this call with The Story of Lutheran Missions. It is fitting that this book should make its appearance in the Quadri centennial Year of the Reformation and that it should be the first book issued by the first co-operative Litera ture Committee of the Woman's Nlissionary Societies of the Lutheran Church, representing the General Synod, the General Council, and the United Synod in the South.
