This book was released on 2018-09-21 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chronica Magistri Rogeri De Houedene, Vol. 2 Ms' spelling of words, both common and preper. With these corrections it is a close copy of the original, ex cept in one great point. It omits several letters of the Scottish series, touching the disputed election to the bishoprick of S. Andrews, and some of the astrological calculations and prophecies, which occupy so large a portion of the Chronicle for the year 1184. Two theories may be adduced to account for the omission of these documents either they were left out as tedious and irrelevant, or they were, when the transcript was made, not yet introduced into the original volume. The former supposition is the only possible one, for the omitted letters occur, for the most part, not at the end of their respective years, where they might have been inserted later than the rest of the text on the liberal interleaves of the magnificent manuscript, but are im bedded in the text, which on both sides of them has been carefully copied by the later scribe. Book Synopsis Sanctuary and Crime in the Middle Ages, 400-1500 by : Karl Shoemaker
Download or read book Sanctuary and Crime in the Middle Ages, 400-1500 written by Karl Shoemaker and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sanctuary law has not received very much scholarly attention. According to the prevailing explanation among earlier generations of legal historians, sanctuary was an impediment to effective criminal law and social control but was made necessary by rampant violence and weak political order in the medieval world. Contrary to the conclusions of the relatively scant literature on the topic, Sanctuary and Crime in the Middle Ages, 400-1500 argues that the practice of sanctuary was not simply an instrumental device intended as a response to weak and splintered medieval political authority. Nor can sanctuary laws be explained as simple ameliorative responses to harsh medieval punishments and the specter of uncontrolled blood-feuds. --

Book Synopsis Archbishops Ralph d'Escures, William of Corbeil and Theobald of Bec by : Jean Truax
Download or read book Archbishops Ralph d'Escures, William of Corbeil and Theobald of Bec written by Jean Truax and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first two archbishops of Canterbury after the Norman Conquest, Lanfranc and Anselm, were towering figures in the medieval church and the sixth archbishop, the martyred Thomas Becket, is perhaps the most famous figure ever to hold the office. In between these giants of the ecclesiastical world came three less noteworthy men: Ralph d'Escures, William of Corbeil, and Theobald of Bec. Jean Truax's volume in the Ashgate Archbishops of Canterbury Series uniquely examines the pontificates of these three minor archbishops. Presenting their biographies, careers, thought and works as a unified period, Truax highlights crucial developments in the English church during the period of the pontificates of these three archbishops, from the death of Anselm to Becket. The resurgent power of the papacy, a changed relationship between church and state and the expansion of archiepiscopal scope and power ensured that in 1162 Becket faced a very different world from the one that Anselm had left in 1109. Selected correspondence, newly translated chronicle accounts and the text and a discussion of the Canterbury forgeries complete the volume.
