Tracking the fall of South African hope into the disenchantment that often characterizes the outlook of its youth today - who face high unemployment, extreme inequality, and widespread crime - Steingo looks to kwaito as a powerful tool that paradoxically engages South Africa's crucial social and political problems by, in fact, seeming to ignore them

Book Synopsis Christos Yannaras by : Andreas Andreopoulos
Download or read book Christos Yannaras written by Andreas Andreopoulos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christos Yannaras is one of the most significant Orthodox theologians of recent times. The work of Yannaras is virtually synonymous with a turn or renaissance of Orthodox philosophy and theology, initially within Greece, but as the present volume confirms, well beyond it. His work engages not only with issues of philosophy and theology, but also takes in wider questions of culture and politics. With contributions from established and new scholars, the book is divided into three sections, which correspond to the main directions that Christos Yannaras has followed – philosophy, theology, and culture – and reflects on the ways in which Yannaras has engaged and influenced thought across these fields, in addition to themes including ecclesiology, tradition, identity, and ethics. This volume facilitates the dialogue between the thought of Yannaras, which is expressed locally yet is relevant globally, and Western Christian thinkers. It will be of great interest to scholars of Orthodox and Eastern Christian theology and philosophy, as well as theology more widely.

Book Synopsis Theos, Anthropos, Christos by : Roy Abraham Varghese
Download or read book Theos, Anthropos, Christos written by Roy Abraham Varghese and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theos, Anthropos, Christos: A Compendium of Modern Philosophical Theology is an anthology of 21 essays (two-thirds of them appearing for the first time) by noted thinkers who rigorously deploy the tools of modern thought to re-examine and restate the central insights of classical philosophy. In natural theology, the contributors address the challenge of influential varieties of skepticism while developing a cogent and coherent framework of thought to defend the existence, as well as the simplicity, immutability, goodness, and infinity of God. In philosophy of mind, they counter modern materialisms with an extensive defense of the existence of a mental reality, which is radically nonphysical. In moral philosophy, the contributors consider the contradictions of relativism and the application of rationally defensible norms to contemporary ethical debates. The final section comprises a critique of syncretism in comparative religion and a phenomenological analysis of the New Testament's Jesus.

Book Synopsis Lucifer is Christos, Inner Light by : Helena Petrovna Blavatsky
Download or read book Lucifer is Christos, Inner Light written by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky and published by Philaletheians UK. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is more in a name than the profane is prepared to understand, or the learned mystic to explain. Lucifer is the first radiant beam that destroys the lethal darkness of night. Stars teach as well as shine. When named Venus, the bright planet-star becomes the symbol of dawn, the chaste Aurora. Lucifer-Venus, the sister planet of our Earth, was sacrificed to the ambition of our little globe to show the latter as the “chosen” planet of the Lord. Lucifer and Venus are the Twin-Stars of the “First Day.” Aphrodite-Venus is dual. The dawn Aphrodite is daughter of Ouranos or Heaven: Her dusk counterpart, who presides over earthly unions, is the daughter of Zeus and Dione. The morning planet is also dual: Lucifer-Venus was dedicated to the Great Mother and symbolized by the Golden Calf, a heifer of either sex, that was male at rising and female at sunset, the Twin-Stars of the “First Day.” “Lucifer,” our London periodical, has proved itself consistent to its originally declared policy. “Lucifer” began waving its torch before the windows of Lambeth Palace, not because of any personal feeling against His Grace of Canterbury, as an individual, but against the officialism he represents, which is at once selfish and un-Christian to the last degree. Theosophical charity demands that time and space should be given to the weaker members of the Society so that they discover their ignorance and cleanse themselves of the ferocious selfishness, narrow-mindedness, and conceit which have made their playing at “the higher life” an almost comical travesty. Unrelenting charity toward the shortcomings of one’s neighbour, and untiring charity with regard to the needs of one poorer than oneself, is the focus and scope of all theosophical teachings, the synthesis of all and every virtue. The foreordaining and predestining fiend-God and Satan, his subordinate agent, are human inventions: they are two of the most morally repulsive and horrible theological dogmas that the nightmares of light-hating monks have ever evolved out of their unclean fancies. Aphrodite-Venus is dual: the dawn Aphrodite is daughter of Ouranos or Heaven; her dusk counterpart, who presides over earthly unions, is the daughter of Zeus and Dione. Similarly, the morning planet is dual: Lucifer-Venus was dedicated to the Great Mother and symbolized by the Golden Calf, a heifer of either sex, that was male at rising and female at sunset, the Twin-Stars of the “First Day.”
Book Synopsis From Logos to Christos by : Ellen M. Leonard
Download or read book From Logos to Christos written by Ellen M. Leonard and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2011-06-27 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Logos to Christos is a collection of essays in Christology written by friends and colleagues in memory of Joanne McWilliam. McWilliam was a pioneer woman in the academic study of theology, specializing in Patristic studies and internationally recognized for her work on Augustine. For countless students she was a teacher, a mentor, an inspiration. These fourteen essays are a fitting tribute to her memory. Written by recognized North American scholars, the essays explore various aspects of Christology, inviting the reader to probe the meaning and significance of Jesus Christ for today. They address a broad range of issues, including the Christology of the Acts of Thomas, Hooker on divinization, and Christ figures in contemporary Canadian culture. Teachers of theology and religious studies, pastors, and informed general readers will find the essays stimulating and instructive. They present the readers with considered, mature, and current scholarship. These are the questions that engaged Joanne McWilliam throughout her life, and she was happy to know that the critical dialogue would continue in this volume as friends and colleagues wrestled with Christological questions. For her, “In Jesus we come to know the compassion, the power, the wisdom, the love, and the faithfulness of God”.

Book Synopsis Paul and the Gentile Problem by : Matthew Thiessen
Download or read book Paul and the Gentile Problem written by Matthew Thiessen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul and the Gentile Problem provides a new explanation for the apostle Paul's statements about the Jewish law in his letters to the Romans and Galatians. Paul's arguments against circumcision and the law in Romans 2 and his reading of Genesis 15-21 in Galatians 4:21-31 belong within a stream of Jewish thinking which rejected the possibility that gentiles could undergo circumcision and adopt the Jewish law, thereby becoming Jews. Paul opposes this solution to the gentile problem because he thinks it misunderstands how essentially hopeless the gentile situation remains outside of Christ. The second part of the book moves from Paul's arguments against a gospel that requires gentiles to undergo circumcision and adoption of the Jewish law to his own positive account, based on his reading of the Abraham Narrative, of the way in which Israel's God relates to gentiles. Having received the Spirit (pneuma) of Christ, gentiles are incorporated into Christ, who is the singular seed of Abraham, and, therefore, become materially related to Abraham. But this solution raises a question: Why is it so important for Paul that gentiles become seed of Abraham? The argument of this book is that Paul believes that God had made certain promises to Abraham that only those who are his seed could enjoy and that these promises can be summarized as being empowered to live a moral life, inheriting the cosmos, and having the hope of an indestructible life.
