Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No gamble in history has been more momentous than the landfall of Columbus's ship the Santa Maria in the Americas in 1492 - an event that paved the way for the conquest of a 'New World'. The accounts collected here provide a vivid narrative of his voyages throughout the Caribbean and finally to the mainland of Central America, although he still believed he had reached Asia. Columbus himself is revealed as a fascinating and contradictory figure, fluctuating from awed enthusiasm to paranoia and eccentric geographical speculation. Prey to petty quarrels with his officers, his pious desire to bring Christian civilization to 'savages' matched by his rapacity for gold, Columbus was nonetheless an explorer and seaman of staggering vision and achievement.

Book Synopsis Christopher Columbus and the Age of Exploration for Kids by : Ronald A. Reis
Download or read book Christopher Columbus and the Age of Exploration for Kids written by Ronald A. Reis and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While all kids know something about Christopher Columbus, few know the full story of this amazing, resourceful, and tragic man of history. Christopher Columbus and the Age of Exploration for Kids takes a comprehensive, nuanced, and inclusive approach to Columbus, placing him in the context of the explorations that came before, during, and after his lifetime and portraying the “Admiral of the Ocean Seas” neither as hero nor heel but as a flawed and complex man whose significance is undeniably monumental. Providing kids, parents, and teachers with a fuller picture of the seafaring life and the dangers and thrills of exploration, the book details all four of Columbus’s voyages to the New World, not just his first, and describes the year that Columbus spent stranded on the island of Jamaica without hope of rescue. A full chapter is devoted to painting a more complex portrait of the indigenous peoples of the New World and another to the consequences of Columbus’s voyages—the exchange of diseases, ideas, crops, and populations between the New World and the Old. Engaging crosscurricular activities such as taking nautical measurements, simulating a hurricane, making an ancient globe, and conducting silent trade elucidate both nautical concepts introduced and the times in which Columbus lived. Ronald Reis is the technology department chair at Los Angeles Valley College and the award-winning author of sixteen nonfiction books for young adults on subjects as varied as African Americans and the Civil War and Simón Bolívar.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The untold story of the secret alliance behind the “discovery” of America • Reveals how a utopian dream of brotherhood among Christians, Muslims, and Jews fueled a murderous power struggle involving secret societies, popes, and kings • Explains why King Ferdinand of Spain supported Columbus’s voyages openly, but, secretly, sought to undermine their purpose • Shows how Columbus knew, sailing west, he would find the “New World,” not Asia Was Columbus a Templar? According to the historic documents and maps revealed by Ruggero Marino, Columbus shared their dream of Christians, Muslims, and Jews living in peace in a New Jerusalem, and his voyage across the Atlantic was both to find a new passage to Asia and to find the place where the New Jerusalem could be built. Marino draws parallels between Marco Polo’s journey east over the Silk Route and Columbus’s sea voyages and reveals that Columbus studied ancient texts and maps from the Vatican Library, access to which was granted by Pope Innocent VIII--who Marino shows to be Columbus’s true father. Innocent VIII (whose own father was Jewish and grandmother was Muslim) was the perfect individual to further the Templars’ plan to create a universal religion combining the spiritual wisdom of the three faiths. Marino shows that Innocent’s “disappearance” and the story that Columbus merely stumbled onto the New World were part of a calculated political and theological cover-up. While King Ferdinand (the model for Machiavelli’s The Prince) and Queen Isabella of Spain are heralded with funding Columbus’s “discovery” of America, it was Innocent VIII who was the main sponsor and master-mind of the expedition. To obscure the purpose of the voyages, and give Spain the credit for the New World discovery, Ferdinand and his agent Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia), Pope Innocent VIII’s successor, initiated the disinformation campaign that has lasted for over 500 years.
