Book excerpt: Finally, the third book of the Christianity 101 series! After books one and two you have heard the bad news. Hell is real, and we are all going there. BUT, there is also GOOD NEWS! The Gospel (good news) is that we can be saved from Hell. So in this third book of the series we explain how Jesus will save us, and what our role is in the whole thing. Some of the questions answered include: What has Jesus done to save us? Is the plan of salvation different now than it was in the Old Testament? Do we have a part to play in our salvation? What does it mean to have faith? What is real repentance? When do we actually get "saved?" What does it mean to be born again? Why do I still sin? Can you lose salvation? What is the unforgivable sin? Is there a purpose for baptism?

There are so few who really understand the work, power, and gifts of the Holy Spirit. While the Bible should always be our ultimate source of understanding, God has also given teachers to help guide us. That is what this entire series is. It is only a guide to aid in our understanding. Some of the questions that this book answers includes: Who is the Holy Ghost? What is the seal of the Holy Ghost? How does the voice of God sound? What makes someone a prophet? How does the Holy Spirit work? When are you baptized in the Holy Ghost? What is the evidence of the Holy Spirit? Is He given by the laying on of hands? What is a blessing and a curse? How can we operate in the gifts of the Holy Spirit?

Instead, Breaking Away from the Textbook offers a fascinating journey through world history. Not a comprehensive, theory-heavy guide, this book focuses on active classroom activities, methods for students to grapple with humanity's issues, and innovative ways to show students the relevance of the past to the world today. Simply put, this book makes world history fun. Soon, your students will be busy debating, thinking, applying, and learning about information that will stay with them for a lifetime. The key to this wonderful work is its incorporation of various disciplines including art, music, and writing to create a fun and active classroom. Volume I covers prehistory to the Renaissance and Volume II covers the Enlightenment to the 20th century. Includes pictures and drawings, appendices, indexes, maps, and a bibliography. Volume III: More Creative Ways to Teach World History covers ancient times through the 20th century and beyond. Appropriate for all grade levels.

Book excerpt: A work of contemporary Christian political thought, this volume addresses the crisis of modern democracy evident in the decline of the institutions of civil society and their theoretical justification. Drawing upon a rich store of social and political reflection found in the Catholic and Neo-Calvinist traditions, the essays mount a robust defense of the irreducible identity and value of the social institutions_family, neighborhood, church, civic association_that serve as the connective tissue of a political community.

What does it mean that some works became so popular as to merit dedicated interpretive commentaries? And does any direct relationship exist between the various methods of interpretation and styles of composition in these commentaries? The present work sets out to provide some solid answers to such questions. At the heart of this book stands a comparative analysis of ancient cuneiform commentary texts from mid-to-late first millennium Mesopotamia and early Jewish commentaries—known as pesharim—from the turn of the common era found in caves near Khirbet Qumran. Though some aspects of Mesopotamian hermeneutics may have influenced Jewish exegesis, likely through Jewish Aramaic scribes, the actual Mesopotamian practice of composing commentary texts exerted little-to-no influence on the compositional techniques of the pesharim. Nevertheless, many textual difficulties in the Qumran pesharim can be explained as the result of an accretion of interpretations over an extended period of time—a practice detailed in the textual record of the Mesopotamian commentaries. What is more, these commentaries reveal important evidence about both the way in which and the extent to which such works functioned as authoritative sources. As a result, this book advocates a shift away from discussing textual authority in simple binary terms, both in ancient and modern contexts, to functional descriptions of literary authority.

This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume demonstrates that we should understand nascent Christianity and early Judaism as sharing to a large extent the same traditions. It throws fresh light on the Jewishness of the Two Ways teaching in Didache 1-6 as it presents a cautious reconstruction of the Jewish prototype of the Two Ways and traces the Jewish life situation in which the instruction could flourish. In the field of liturgical studies, a significant contribution is made to the discussion of Didache 7-10. It improves our understanding of the Jewish provenance and historical development of Baptism and Eucharist. The book also presents an intriguing look into the ministry of itinerant apostles and prophets (Didache 11-15) considering the larger environment of Jewish religious and cultural history.
