Book excerpt: 2017 Reprint of 1947 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition software. Augustine recounts that he "...wrote a book on Faith, Hope, and Charity, at the request of the person to whom I addressed it, that he might have a work of mine which should never be out of his hands, such as the Greeks call an Enchiridion (Handbook). There I think I have...carefully treated the manner in which God is to be worshipped, which knowledge divine Scripture defines to be the true wisdom of man." Augustine usually calls the book "On Faith, Hope and Love," because he treats the subject under these three heads. The work is alternatively titled, Faith, Hope, and Charity, or The Enchiridion. It is a compact treatise on Christian piety, written in response to a request by an otherwise unknown person, named Laurentius, shortly after the death of Saint Jerome in 420. It is intended as a model for Christian instruction or catechesis. As the title indicates, the work is organized according to the three graces necessary for the Christian worship of God: Faith, Hope and Love. Under Faith, Augustine explains the use of the Apostles' Creed, in teaching Christian doctrine and in refuting heresies. Under Hope, he briefly explains the Lord's Prayer as a model of Christian prayer. The final part is a discourse on Christian love or charity.

Book Synopsis 1-2 Kings, 1-2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther by : Marco Conti

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The church fathers, as they did in earlier books dealing with Israel's history from the time of Joshua to the united monarchy, found ample material for typological and moral interpretation in 1-2 Kings, 1-2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther. It will be immediately clear to readers of this volume that they gave much more attention to 1-2 Kings than to others; whether this was due to a certain repetitiveness in the story line or other reasons is unclear. But the narratives of wise King Solomon, the construction of the temple, the prophets Elijah and Elisha, and the fates of various faithful and unfaithful kings and other powerful people were well suited to their purposes. Among Greek commentators in this Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture volume, readers will find Justin Martyr, Clement of Alexandria, Origen, Methodius, Eusebius of Caesarea, Athanasius, Cyril of Jerusalem, Basil the Great, Gregory of Nazianzus, John Chrysostom, Cyril of Alexandria, Theodoret of Cyr, Procopius of Gaza and John the Monk. Among Latin commentators are Tertullian, Cyprian, Novatian, Lactantius, Ambrose, Jerome, Prudentius, Augustine, Paulinus of Nola, John Cassian, Peter Chrysologus, Maximus of Turin, Salvian the Presbyter, Fulgentius of Ruspe, Caesarius of Arles, Gregory the Great, Bede and Rabanus Maurus. Syriac commentators include Aphrahat, Ephrem, Sahdona, Isaac of Nineveh and Isho'dad of Merv. Together they set before readers a table of delights and theological insights, some of which are here available to English readers for the first time.

Book Synopsis Conceptual Blending in Early Christian Discourse by : Aleksander Gomola
Download or read book Conceptual Blending in Early Christian Discourse written by Aleksander Gomola and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cognitive linguists and biblical and patristic scholars have recently given more attention to the presence of conceptual blends in early Christian texts, yet there has been so far no comprehensive study of the general role of conceptual blending as a generator of novel meanings in early Christianity as a religious system with its own identity. This monograph points in that direction and is a cognitive linguistic exploration of pastoral metaphors in a wide range of patristic texts, presenting them as variants of THE CHURCH IS A FLOCK network. Such metaphors or blends, rooted in the Bible, were used by Patristic writers to conceptualize a great number of particular notions that were constitutive for the early church, including the responsibilities of the clergy and the laity, morality and penance, church unity, baptism and soteriology. This study shows how these blends became indispensable building blocks of a new religious system and explains the role of conceptual blending in this process. The book is addressed to biblical and patristic scholars interested in a new, unifying perspective for various strands of early Christian thought and to cognitive linguists interested in the role of conceptual integration in religious language. Produced with the support of the Faculty of Philology, Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland.
Book Synopsis On Faith, Hope and Love (the Enchiridion): The Early Church Father's Christian Teachings on Prayer and Piety by : Saint Augustine
Download or read book On Faith, Hope and Love (the Enchiridion): The Early Church Father's Christian Teachings on Prayer and Piety written by Saint Augustine and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-08-24 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dating to the early 5th century AD, the Enchiridion of St. Augustine is a superb example of early Christian instruction and virtues, summating the pillars of the faith in a manner inspiring. Augustine of Hippo was among the first Roman Christians to develop and author a comprehensive spiritual philosophy. As bishop of Hippo Regius, his theological studies and writings provided an excellent foundation to religious scholarship; many of the books he authored served as an example to later authors. A great revival of interest in the early Church Fathers following the Reformation, and again in the 19th century, brought Augustine's works to renewed appreciation and prominence. Detailing how the Christian believer can better his faith with prayer and practice of the virtues set out by Jesus Christ in the Gospels, the book itself is composed in answer to a person named Laurentius. Apparently a Christian curious about his creed, Laurentius sought the advice and counsel of St. Augustine of Hippo.
