Book Synopsis The Strenuous Life by : Ryan Swanson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “It seemed as if Theodore Roosevelt’s biographers had closed the book on his life story. But Ryan Swanson has uncovered an untold chapter” (Johnny Smith, coauthor of Blood Brothers: The Fatal Friendship between Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X). Crippling asthma, a frail build, and grossly myopic eyesight: these were the ailments that plagued Teddy Roosevelt as a child. In adulthood, he was diagnosed with a potentially fatal heart condition and was told never to exert himself again. Roosevelt’s body was his weakness, the one hill he could never fully conquer—and as a result he developed what would become a lifelong obsession with athletics that he carried with him into his presidency. As President of the United States, Roosevelt boxed, practiced Ju-Jitsu, played tennis nearly every day, and frequently invited athletes and teams to the White House. It was during his administration that America saw baseball’s first ever World Series; interscholastic sports began; and schools began to place an emphasis on physical education. In addition, the NCAA formed, and the United States hosted the Olympic Games for the first time. From a prize-winning historian, this book shows how Roosevelt fought desperately (and sometimes successfully) to shape American athletics in accordance with his imperialistic view of the world. It reveals that, in one way or another, we can trace our fanaticism for fitness and sports directly back to the twenty-sixth president and his relentless pursuit of “The Strenuous Life.” “Essential reading for anyone who cares about the history of sports in America.” —Michael Kazin, author of War against War: The American Fight for Peace, 1914–1918

Book Synopsis The Life of Mary Baker G. Eddy and the History of Christian Science by : Willa Cather
Download or read book The Life of Mary Baker G. Eddy and the History of Christian Science written by Willa Cather and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This controversial biography of the founder of the Christian Science church was serialized in McClure's Magazine in 1907-8 and published as a book the next year. It disappeared almost overnight and has been difficult to find ever since. Although a Canadian mewspaperwoman named Georgine Milmine collected the material and was credited as the author, The Life Of Mary Baker G. Eddy was actually written by Willa Cather, an editor at McClure's at that time. In his introduction to this Bison Book edition, David Stouck reveals new evidence of Cather's authorship of The Life of Mary Baker G. Eddy. He discusses her fidelity to facts and her concern with psychology and philosophy that would take creative form later on. Indeed, this biography contains "some of the finest portrait sketches and reflections on human nature that Willa Cather would ever write."
Book Synopsis The Hebrew Word for 'sign' and its Impact on Isaiah 7:14 by : Mark D. Schutzius II
Download or read book The Hebrew Word for 'sign' and its Impact on Isaiah 7:14 written by Mark D. Schutzius II and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isaiah 7:14 is one of the most debated verses in all of Scripture. Scholars from all backgrounds have provided countless works on the interpretation of this one verse. Yet, there is no decisive material that confirms exactly what the verse means. The implications of this one verse carry into prophecy, biblical inspiration, biblical infallibility, and numerous other issues. This book analyzes the way the writers of the Old Testament used the Hebrew word'ot, which is often translated "sign." The author then takes that information and discusses the implications of that usage regarding Isaiah 7:14. For example, in some instances, the word referred to miraculous events. In others, it may have referred to something symbolic. Throughout the work, the writer analyzes various aspects of the usage of the word and seeks to determine if there is a relevant pattern to apply to the way the word is used in Isaiah 7:14.
Book Synopsis True Christianity by : J. Russell Frazier
Download or read book True Christianity written by J. Russell Frazier and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-01-22 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John William Fletcher (1729-1785) was a seminal theologian during the early methodist movement and the Church of England in the eighteenth century. Best known for the Checks to Antinomianism, he worked out a theology of history to defend the church against the encroachment of antinomianism as a polemic against hyper-Calvinism, whose system of divine fiat and finished salvation, Fletcher believed, did not take seriously enough either the activity of God in salvation history or an individual believer's personal progress in salvation. Fletcher made the doctrine of accommodation a unifying principle of his theological system and further developed the doctrine of divine accommodation into a theology of ministry. As God accommodated divine revelation to the frailties of human beings, ministers of the gospel must accommodate the gospel to their hearers in order to gain a hearing for the gospel without losing the goal of true Christianity. This book contains insights for pastors, missionaries, and Christian thinkers on true Christianity from Fletcher, who devoted himself, according to Wesley, to being "an altogether Christian."
Book Synopsis George Washington and Political Fatherhood by : Heinz Tschachler
Download or read book George Washington and Political Fatherhood written by Heinz Tschachler and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-01-31 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than two hundred years after his death, George Washington is still often considered the metaphorical father of the United States. He was first known as the "Father of His Country" during his lifetime, when the American people bestowed the title upon him as a symbolic act of resistance and rebirth. Since then, presidents have stood as paternal figureheads for America, often serving as moral beacons. This book tracks political fatherhood throughout world history, from the idea of the pater patriae in Roman antiquity to Martin Luther's Bible translations and beyond. Often using George Washington as a paradigm, the author explores presidential iconography in the U.S., propaganda and the role of paternal rhetoric in shaping American sociopolitical history--including the results of the 2016 presidential election.
